I was originally interested in this hotel because I read that the Onsen had a Museum full of Kishio Suga's work. I had been following this amazing Japanese artist for a number of years... so that fact was a deciding factor for me. But, the Onsen, the staff, the care that we felt they put into everything they did, the atmosphere of the place, the gardens also designed by Kishio Suga, the delightful guests we had the pleasure of meeting, our room and the food we were served - and let's not forget the tour of the museum! - made me love this place. Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya has history. Someone told us that the Onsen was 500 years old. Most of the Japanese guests we met there went to purely relax. The kind and capable staff take amazing care of all the guests: A Japanese friend in Tokyo told me I should celebrate the Winter Solstice while I was in Nasushiobara. She explained that on that one day, it had always been traditionally celebrated by putting YUZU fruit in Japanese baths and eating something made of pumpkin. I asked the hotel about all this. I really don't think it was part of their plan... but, they did it all: the YUZU in the baths and the specially prepared Pumpkin desserts. It was all to please us, their guests, and make sure our stay was perfect. I was so grateful and felt so pampered and happy. I enjoyed that fruit in the Japanese bath more than you can imagine. So, If you want to relax in a beautiful Onsen with history, go see great art at the. Suga museum, to have a beautiful experience,and be pampered in a very Japanese sort of way...you must come to Itamuro Onsen Daikokuya.

Our stay at Shionoyu Onsen Rengetsu was delightful. We were picked up from Nasushiobara train station by the free hotel shuttle (available for 1:40 pm and 3:40 pm pickups -- 10 am and 12 pm returns to the station) and had a very pleasant drive into the mountains. The hotel is beautifully situated on the side of a steep hill and overlooks deep forests, with a gurgling stream below it. Our room featured our own deep onsen on the balcony, so we could sit in the hot water looking at the gorgeous trees and listening to the stream. But we also had access to the hotel's onsen, both the public bath (separated by sexes) and smaller private spas for couples/families. The public bath also had two types of saunas and a variety of different baths, including one outdoors. The food in the restaurant was substantial, delicious, and very traditional Japanese cuisine. They are not able to accommodate food restrictions, unless you want to exclude all 28 of the restrictions/allergies on their list, which would make for very dull eating. Just ask the servers if anything they've put on the table contains the food/s you don't/can't eat. The hotel is a bit isolated. We walked to the little town via a foot path that was quite a pleasant hike, about 15 minutes. Alas, it is not a thriving town and there wasn't a whole lot to do. Scenic area, though. If the weather had been better (it was raining), we would have hiked the trail longer and/or headed out to another village. It's my understanding the hotel will shuttle guests a certain distance in the area but I'm not sure how far or how often. There's also a bus system. The accommodations were great, the bed super comfortable. We did have separate twin beds, so if you don't want that, be careful when you make your reservation. Altogether a wonderful, relaxing visit. Highly recommended.

This place turned out to be a REAL HIDDEN GEM! We have onsen hot tub in our room. The place serves free flow of local confectionary (many types), Haagendazs ice-cream, japanese wine, bear, coffee, tea and japanese tea at the lobby common area! You think that’s it? Wait until dinner time! The 8-course fine dining really blew my mind! We got wagyu, freshly made tofu, truffle, caviar, sashimi, smoked duck…. And free flow of drinks and alcohol! The dining service was really top class. They carefully introduced each dish and constantly checked in on us as well as having casual chat! My husband called the meal a steal! Breakfast started with freshly baked croissants, then finely served yogurt, bacon, egg, potato gratin on a plate akin to work of an artist. This hotel is a gem tugged in the middle of lowly populated areas. It is a real pleasant surprise in this Japan trip for my family of four. Thanks to the amazing hotel staff and waiters/ waitresses!
