Staffs cant speak English. But they are very nice and friendly. They gave us a very good service. Breakfast is delicious!

It’s beautifully situated. Up in the mountains with gentle slopes and lovely hiking trails. Property is cozy and clean and the staff were very nice, responsive and helpful.

Miyamaso Takamiya ligt op 10 minuten lopen van de kabelbaan Zao Sky en beschikt over 9 natuurlijke warmwaterbronnen. Het eten was zeer verzorgd en lekker. Ook de ligging was prima maar moeilijk met de auto te bereiken.

Pension Puutaro is gelegen in Zao Onsen, op 6 minuten lopen van skigebied Zao Onsen, en biedt een tuin, rookvrije kamers, gratis WiFi in de hele accommodatie en een restaurant. Keiko, you are a wonderful host, such an angel. We thoroughly enjoyed our time staying with you and we will be back. Thank you so much for having us.

Het ligt op slechts 1 minuut lopen van het skiresort Zao Onsen.Zao Kokusai Hotel biedt ruime warmwaterbronbaden binnen en buiten en kamers in Japanse stijl. The location was absolutely breathtaking, we visited in autumn but I'm already planning my next visit for winter! The staff were so lovely and accommodating, not everyone spoke perfect english but they make a genuine effort to make us feel welcome none the less. I loved the onsen, we used the private and public facilities and found them so relaxing. We ate in the restaurant every morning and once for dinner, the food was so well done and we loved getting a taste of the local cuisine. Seriously 10/10 its not the cheapest stay but it is worth the price.

Yamagata Zao Pension Apron Stage is gelegen op 2,3 km van skigebied Zao Onsen, en biedt een 3-sterrenaccommodatie in Kaminoyama en heeft een tuin, een terras en een restaurant. This is a great pension run by a lovely family. The husband picked us up at the bus station and drove us to the pension and also took us to the slopes in the morning. They gave us a coupon for renting gear and a map explaining the different onsen options around town. Their English is pretty limited, but they are happy to use Google translate. Also, it was not a big deal, but I think it is important for foreign guests to be aware that ski culture in Japan sort of assumes you are eating dinner at your accommodation. We did not know this and did not book dinner at the hotel. Most restaurants in town were fully booked with reservations (although there is a convenience store with good takeaway food), so try to book dinner at the hotel or make a dinner reservation somewhere well in advance. We were very luck and managed to make a reservation at the Mongolian lamb place Kasheru for the second night and that was amazing. But we saw restaurants turning people away repeatedly because everywhere in town was full. Also, the family will not pick you up by car any later that 6:45 pm (perfectly reasonable) and the public ski shuttles don't run on weekdays, so you need to pre-book a taxi if dinner will end later than that (which it probably will since most restaurants open at 6 pm). And there are not a lot of taxis and no Uber. I wish I had realized all of this up front, but that was our own ignorance and our stay was great regardless. Again, this is just the local ski culture and not the hotel's fault. It's just helpful information for future guests.
