About Sintra

Including tips for the best time to visit Sintra

Located on the Portuguese Riviera, Sintra is incredibly enchanting. The city is famous for an impressive UNESCO-collection of palaces, castles and landscapes – listed as the Cultural Landscape of Sintra. It’s no wonder then, that Sintra attracts visitors from around the world to join its very real fairytale.

One of Sintra’s most iconic castles is the Pena Palace – a colourful Romanticist castle that is listed as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. From its hilltop perch, you’ll be able to take some amazing photographs of the Sintra Mountains. Another highlight is the Palace of Sintra, renowned for being the best-preserved medieval royal residence in Portugal. Built in the 15th-century, it’s located just outside the city and is a trip well worth it if only to admire its stunning white walls contrasted with orange and yellow rooftop hues.

Sintra is close to some of Portugal’s most scenic natural landscapes. Check out the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park for dramatic mountains, coastal cliffs, sandy beaches and lush forests. It offers plenty of hiking trails and even some fossilised dinosaur tracks. There's also Praia da Adraga, a pristine golden cove known as one of the best beaches in the Sintra region and for good reason.

Sintra is a wonderful place that is great to visit year round but especially the summer when it stay cooler than Lisbon and Cascais. It has charm in spades, attractions that delight, some pretty excellent accommodation options and restaurants/cafés. A little overcrowded.

We stayed at Sintra Marmoris Palace, truly the highlight of our two week travels through Portugal. Sintra has excellent restaurants and is a beautiful place to enjoy. Its very walkable. Would highly recommend staying rather than just a day trip from Lisbon

The evenings are wonderfull as by then all of the bus tours and say trippers have gone. It really is very very busy during the day. In the evening you can easily find a restaurant for a meal or just a drink. During the day much harder.

Restaurants, cafes and shops nearby provided great food, drinks and friendly service. Attractions were very well setup to allow tourists an entertaining and informative view of much of the area’s history.

It is best to pre-book all tickets online as far advance as possible and get to the main monuments early in the morning. However, there were too many tourists and the restaurants and shops were all at tourist price.

Sintra is a lovely town in the lush mountains with many historic 'Palaces' to visit and tours are available to take you round the area to ensure you don't miss anything. As an example the hop on-hop off buses are ideal as you can easily choose where you want to spend time. There are a variety of restaurants and shops selling some traditional goods but always worth wandering up the windy streets to find the more artisan shops or interesting spots. Mid-week seemed to be a good time to be there as it certainly became much busier near/over the weekend. A lovely spot and well worth visiting.
