If you are looking for a quiet, break with beautiful views and walks on the doorstep this is the place to stay. If you want facilities i.e. a shop and places to eat within walking distance then this is probably too remote. We loved walking through the grounds and walking up Binsey, which is the closest small mountain. Keswick, is only about a half hour drive which has lots of facilities and a great supermarket.

Ireby itself is a small village about 1 miles walk from the property. It has a pub but no other facilities. We ate at the Greyhound a few miles away. This was ok and value for money. You definitely need a car to access other areas though cycling is a possibility if you enjoy hills. Roads in the immediate area are typically narrow but very quiet. Can take walks from the doorstep and can get to the coast reasonably easily about 30mins drive away. The property has lots of information on where to go like local whiskey distillery, cheese maker and tearooms.

The suggested recommendations are geared for younger/active people, possibly with dogs. As an older couple we were more interested in touring the area. We enjoyed the market in Keswick and enjoyed the towns of Maryport and Cockermouth. We took a steamer trip on Ullswater which was impacted by heavy rain! In fine weather that would have been the highlight of our stay. The pub in Ireby is friendly and serves good meals.
