Windermere is the largest natural lake in England. It is a ribbon lake formed in a glacial trough after the retreat of ice at the start of the current interglacial period. It has been one of the country's most popular places for holidays and summer homes since the arrival of the Kendal and Windermere Railway's branch line in 1847. Historically forming part of the border between Lancashire and Westmorland, it is now within the county of Cumbria and the Lake District National Park.
It is beautiful, sunset over Windermere very relaxing. We did a yellow cruise to the south of the lake . around 40 min sail, so peaceful. Our 4 day trip wasn't long enough, but then it never is. Can't wait to go back
Get up early if you want to hire a boat at busy times. There are long queues. We went on Easter bank holiday. Weather was great so it was very busy both on and off the lake. We hired a boat for two hours picking it up at 9.30 whilst the lake was very q
Investigate the Windermere Cruise options and use that as your transport to get to various villages along the lake shore. (You can get off and get on a later ferry). We were self-driving and so we investigated a couple of tour packages on option to include stops for ourselves outside of Windermere too.
Great place to stay if you want a variety of shops and restaurants. If you want to go walking and climbing and not bothered about meals out and shops, then there are better places to stay away from all the tour
Very nice stay in a well-presented spacious room. Comfortable four-poster bed. Staff very welcoming, friendly and helpful. Special thanks to the young girl at reception for persevering to find us a taxi when all the taxis were busy! Really lovely breakfast cooked to order. Great location within a few minutes walk from a selection of bars and restaurants. Within easy reach (1.5 miles) of Bowness for a variety of boat trips on beautiful Lake Windermere. Can't wait to return.
The facilities for making breakfast were exceptional, the house itself took our breath away, I almost felt emotional about it, it really is of the most exceptional quality of any house, hotel or accommodation I have ever stayed in, whilst the location was superlative. You simply could not have asked for a more beautiful and tranquil setting, amongst the many views of Lake Windermere from different viewpoints around the house and grounds.
The food was absolutely incredible, I recommend the ribeye steak. The hotel is within walking distance of bars and shops and a short drive to lake Windermere. The room was comfortable with comforts such as a kettle and hot drinks. Next time though I would probably pay a bit more for a bigger room that faces the front toward the lake

The breakfast was gorgeous made with locally sourced products. The location was ideal close to the shops and restaurants and only a mile from Lake Windermere itself. The Ivythwaite Lodge was spotlessly clean and the hosts were really nice and helpful throughout our stay.
