We like hiking, so Windermere was great for us. There are so many paths, going through fields full of sheep (and we even spotted a deer!)... lovely views of the countryside for all levels of ability. We weren't quite interested in the indoors activities that were advertised (we're a young couple without kids), so our trip depended a lot on weather. This is a very rainy area, so make sure to check the weather before planning your trip. It is very easy to get around Windermere and the nearby Bowness without a car; we arrived there by train and mostly walked everywhere. There are plenty of restaurants in all price ranges and pubs too. Food didn't really stand up, but that's maybe because it was mid January, their low season. Many of the better restaurants seemed to be closed or making renovations. There are buses that go to all nearby sights and villages, but they are pricey and don't run too frequently during the winter months so, if you're interested in going further from the town, you'll find having a car would be best. Our favourite activity was the Treetop Trek at Brockhole and the lake cruise.
Would highly recommend Windermere as a short break, but I must stress, in the summer!! During winter months a lot of businesses close, and with bad weather there really isn't a great deal to do.. Again, completely different in the summer months, the view from the top of orrest head is breathtaking (as is the trek up there). Lots of great places to eat though, and I must recommend the lighthouse especially, great food, great staff and great selection of cocktails
The location is superb stunning scenery, views are incredible there is something for every one young or old. Dining out is incredible. I lived in the lakes and moved to Cheshire but I still holiday there. I've walked cycled camped stayed in stunning hotels I absolutely love it there and have a life time of some of my Life's greatest memories. Couldn't recommend it enough. 😀
Windermere is just perfect for a holiday - the local people were very friendly and helpful, our hotel was fabulous and all the restaurant had great food and value for money. Overall we had a fantastic time. We are planning to go come back and this time stay longer.
