„The whole place was very secure and well maintained. The house is very old-style Italian, more Tea with Mussolini's mother than with the man himself. The house dates from 1890-ish and is in lovely condition. It was converted from the family's home to a B & B in 2013, using all the period furniture that was already in the house.
They have inserted modern bathroom facilities without damaging the original structure or decor. Hats off to them for that! It does have an aged atmosphere and if that's what you're looking for then it's right here.
The location is excellent. It is literally two minutes walk to the San Donato gate into the old walled town. Another 400 yds. once inside takes you to the bus station from where you can visit Pisa, Livorno, Viareggio etc. etc. all in less than an hours journey. 'Travellers Tip'. Take the bus that goes over the mountain to Viareggio. Much more interesting than the Autostrada...
Across the road (but out of sight and earshot) is an Italian version of a Bavarian Beerstube, complete with Lederhosen and Frauleins with bosoms. This is good fun and the food is cheap but very cheerful, so much so that you may have to book at weekends.
If you go into the old town to eat, make careful note of the places where there are most customers and eat there. There are a few rogues in there. The concierge has very good English and will give you a list of the best ones.
