Very nice town (even it is a city, but in touristical part, it's a cosy little town with sloped cobblestone streets), VERY NICE people (Bulgarians are our brothers, indeed, I always felt that, as a Romanian).
Well organised, photogenic, good food, nice views and relaxing!

I used to live in Veliko Tarnovo (VT) so I know it pretty well. Being they old capital of Bulgaria, it is steeped in history and is great place for tourists with an interest in Bulgarian history to come and explore.
The Yantra River meanders in a steep valley, through Veliko Tarnovo.
There are a plethora of hotels to stay at and many apartments to rent, along with numerous cafés, bars and restaurants.
The main street winds its way along the hillside and the total length is walkable in about 40 minutes. There are shops of all types and further out of the city, there are super stores - supermarkets, DIY stores and furniture stores.
Taxis are cheap, metered and widely available and can also take you to nearby villages and back.
The city is served a network of buses.
Veliko Tarnovo has a railway station, that connects with Gorna Oryavitsa (a main railway hub) the line runs between Ruse and Stara Zagora. There's also a once daily international train between Bucharest and Istanbul, stopping at Gorna Oryavitsa and Veliko Tarnovo.
There are museums, galleries, a beautiful park, even a visiting circus.
Tsaravets Fortress lies at one end of the city, at the top of a hill.
For those with disabilities, walking is often up and down steps and fairly steep hills and wheelchair access to many places is limited, although this is improving, albeit slowly.
Climate in Veliko Tarnovo is very cold in the winter months of January and February, as low as minus 15°C and it can snow heavily. Summer months are hot.

The free walking tour of the city is excellent.
The free walking tour of the city is excellent. We paid a premium price (50 euro) for a guide around the fortress, but are almost certain we could have found a competent guide for less. The fortress has a rich history, but know that what you see has been rebuilt based on what it might have looked like--there was no written record to know for sure.

My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed.
My first time in this city since 2008. Very disappointed. The city has become a tourist trap. No decent place to eat that's not overpriced and with a completely bored and "couldn't be bothered" attitude of the wait staff.
Tsarvets is an overpriced ruin - half of it is a construction site with junk and pipes rolling around waiting to trip people up. I can't believe one of the nation's greatest treasures is so run down. Compared to other smaller museums in Bulgaria, they have done ZERO effort to make it nice, tell a story, have exhibits that transport you into the magical time of the Bulgarian kingdoms. It's like walking around a junkyard parking lot. Very disappointing.
Everyone in the city is clearly just using their hotels and attractions as a cash cow. Doing the bare minimum, if at all. A waiter at one of the restaurants had the gall to ask my partner for a tip when he paid with a credit card. I guess the waiter assumed he was American (he's not) and used to tipping 20%. We didn't tip because the service is atrocious and the servers don't expect Bulgarians to tip. Very off putting.

A wonderful mix of old and new in this historical center of beautiful Bulgaria. Lively and also cool. And bulgarians are decent people. Great restaurants and atmosphere - top recommendation is Restaurant Shtastliveca in the center of the town. Great food and great service by waiters who even know how to serve a good wine. Excellent! Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of Bulgaria during the 2nd Bulgarian Empire 1185-1396. Approx 220 km from Sofia - same distance to Varna and the Bulgarian Rivieria and wonderful Varna at the Black Sea. Beautiful trip by car in a stunning nature.
Extremely clean, nice and cozy apartment.
The owner was very kind in letting us check-in 2 hours earlier.
Although the yard of the apartment block is not big enough to accommodate many cars, we managed to park our car right in front of the entrance.
The kitchen has all the necessary stuff for a comfortable stay, I`d say even more than necessary.
The shower is in traditional Bulgarian style - no cabin/curtain, but it is dedicated premise, so no issues.
Twin room we stayed looks into the courtyard, it was quiet at night.
This hostel is located in a beautiful old Bulgarian house and has a shared balcony with a great view. Spending a few nights in this house is really an amazing experience, you can feel how people lived here in the past. The hostel is located in the very center of the city, close to all important places. Check-in is done automatically, there is no contact with the staff. Air conditioning in the room worked well.
The room was extremely clean, be sure, it's a great achievement for Bulgaria. Fresh bed linen, towels, working silent AC, clean bathroom. Reception is available 24/24. We found public parking behind the building, but they do offer a reservation if you ask. Be careful if you arrive at night, it's a city center and most of public parking slots will be busy. Good place for staying for 1 night.
The hotel has amazing location. It's very close to every attractive location in the city. The staff is friendly and tries to do their best. The room view from room was great and the cleaning service was on point. The room is big, the bed is comfortable and the equipment fine. Bathroom was clean and big. It included a bathtub. Overall the stay was great but I had higher expectations.
Amazing front-desk staff, free coffee/tea at reception, excellent location. The building looks nice from the outside, so are the reception area and the restaurant. Breakfast had to be ordered from the previous evening and options were quite limited (e.g. no cereal or fresh fruits) - which is not a plus - but overall the food quality was good compared to other hotels in Bulgaria.
The property lies on a street steeped in history, and although the studio was small, it had all the facilities necessary for a 4 night stay. It is very well decorated & appointed, and the views from the balcony of the old town on the hill and Yantra river below, are spectacular. The host was very friendly and helpful.
This is a very special hotel with an incredible view of the Yantra river gorge on one of the oldest streets in Veliko Tarnovo. Our room was very spacious, comfortably furnished and had a wonderful balcony! The staff was very courteous and helpful! We would stay at Hotel Gurko again and again!!!
This is the best place we've stayed at in Veliko Turnovo. Quiet, convenient, comfortable and private. It ticks all boxes! The hosts are amazing, helpful and friendly. The house is full of character with private parking and the swimming pool is a real treat. We'll be surely coming back!
The location was pristine and in a very walkable distance from the entirety of Veliko Turnovo, not to mention and the view of Tsarevets was incredible from the hotel rooms. The staff was also very friendly (to us as Bulgarians) and made the entire stay extremely pleasant.
Excellent location, close to main attractions and restaurants (a few minutes walk to Tsaravets Fortress). The room is better and way bigger than 5-star hotels (and we had a terrace the size of a studio apartment). Free parking is a big plus, especially in Veliko Tarnovo.
The location is excellent! Right at the end of the beautiful General Gurko street, in a historically significant building that housed great Bulgarian revolutionaries.
The staff are also very helpful and friendly.
It was truly a pleasure to stay here.
the best hotel I’ve stayed in in 6 weeks in Romania and Bulgaria. excellent value for money, little garden, really helpful staff. excellent location. easy to find from bus station late at night.
The position of the hotel was great for us. Close to the main objectives and a silent area of the town. We had water in the room and slippers. Comfy bad, AC for warm. Good value for the money.
Everything was perfect ! The room was clean, there is a “real” shower where we don’t need to mop after, quite rare in Bulgaria. The view is amazing. Very close to all the attractions in town.
The owner was very nice and gave us the location and details on how to get there.
The studio is very nice and we took a good sleep before continuing our trip. in
