Zahara de la Sierra is a great location for an active holiday with opportunity to relax if preferred. Bars and restaurants offer traditional, local produce. Hotel Al Lago was especially good. The town does have the steep hill streets of the traditional white villages.

Zahara is spectacularly situated with absolutely stunning views to the mountains over the reservoir. The village is immaculate and has everything you need, shops and restaurants. I did some local walks, but bear in mind that most accommodation is near the top of a very steep hill, especially Tugasa Arco de la Villa.

Very cute town.
Very cute town. We stayed there for 6 nights and travelled around the region each day by car. Southern Spain is quite large so finding a central location to go everywhere from is difficult. I would recommend Zahara for the western parts (like Ronda, Seville, Cadiz, and Gibraltar), and the move on to an eastern town for the likes of Granada and Cordoba. We did make it Granada for a day trip, but it is a 2.5 hour drive each way. Zahara itself is a nice town in its own right and nice for walking around at night. We didn't go to many restaurants as we cooked most nights, but can highly recommend the pizza place. We were there in summer and it was very hot deep into the night. Make sure you stay in a place with AC if you're staying in summer. It didn't cool down below 35 celsius until after midnight, and was still around 39-40 degrees at sunset (~10pm). One thing to plan for is the very windy narrow mountain roads connecting Zahara and the towns on the south coast (e.g. Estepona). We didn't want to risk it in our SUV rental car after a few close calls with other cars on the road up to Grazalema.

A lovely old village with some very steep hills, I recommend some form of transport for getting around as it is quite a long way to the reservoir. Can't comment on the restaurants as I was self catering.

I was in Zahara de la Sierra also briefly in 2005. At the time I thought it was a wonderful village but unfortunately then I had very little time for my visit.
So all those years I dreamed of returning for a quieter and longer stay.
However, Zahara de la Sierra has meanwhile become very touristy. Certainly on the weekend.
That’s why I advise to visit the village on weekdays if you can.
When I was there at the end of May 2022 there were a lot of weekend tourists.

A quaint old house with a lovely view from the patio over the lake. Unfortunately the pool was closed (despite it being 30C every day we were there) and there was a large steep staircase up to the bedroom which we had not been warned about and which my wife found very difficult to negotiate. There was also no WiFi which I think should be standard nowadays. Zaharia is a lovely example of a “white town”. Not the easiest to drive around and you need to be fit to walk up and down the streets. The El Lago restaurant is on the bottom road so easy to access for parking and the food is good.

A nice and convenient apartment at the heart of the most beautiful white village in Sierra de Grazalema. Perfect as a base for car exploring of the region (even to Ronda) and to walk everywhere in Zahara de la Sierra itself. We were only two but the apartment could easily fit more. No issues with cold close to new years, didn't even need the fireplace or heating. The hosts were nice and helpful, available easily for our arrival and departure. Absolutely worth the price
We booked this hotel at the last minute and found it to be one of our favorites of our two week trip. Fantastic on site restaurant and hosts. If you plan to eat there - check days they are open. Beautifully designed room with a lovely balcony and large bathroom with shower and tub. The hotel also has outdoor seating overlooking the reservoir. We enjoyed walking right down the street to a beautiful historic mirador to watch the sun set. Nice free parking in front.
Los Estribos gave you exactly what was described. The owner was there to meet us at the expected arrival time. The room was Ok, and the view was exceptional. There was a type of cooker avaialble but we decided not to use it and ate out each night. Definitely value for money. We parked just passed the hotel on the first night, but this was busy, and we used the village free car park the next night. Stunning location
A new apartment in zahara de la sierra. we were the first guests there.
Matti the owner of the place is a sweet and smily women. she welcomed us with a smile and good energy.
there is parking outside the apartment.
the apartments are clean and have everything you need, also kitchen, coffee tea and sweets.
the rooms in the second floor are amazing, nice Balcony with a view to the mountains.
we loved it !
Very cute apartment in the best and prettiest location of Zahara de la Sierra. It's right next to the church on a cute plaza and accessed through a small alley. Apartment has everything (apart from airco) and is very comfortable. Beautiful view from the terrace, and some nice restaurants in the street. Free parking 1 minute away from the apt :)
This is a traditional hotel situated in the main part of the town where traffic is restricted. Being part way up the considerable hill there is less of a climb to see the views, sites and castle. There are plenty of bars and restaurants nearby. After we dropped off our bags the parking was just a couple of hundred metres away.
Authentic Spanish house - just like flying back 7-8 decades in time. Well equipped kitchen, comfy beds, big enough living room with sofas. We really enjoyed the day we spent there. The neighborhood with the village and its medieval castle worth to see. Also the restaurants nearby with traditional local foods are nice.
Other reviewers have been very enthusiastic about the view over the reservoir from the hotel and I must say that yes, it was really extremely beautiful. It was the main reason I chose this hotel. It's fairly modern and the room and bathroom were large and very clean with a very comfortable bed and a good hot shower.
Apartment is amazing. Large and spacious with stunning views from the living area. Bedrooms and bathroom are well fitted. Hotel Al Lago and Restaurant Meson Onate are both good for food and drinks. The walk to the very top of the castle is worth the effort. Good to have private parking included with the apartment.
We have stayed here before and like the location to all of the restaurants and the ease of parking nearby. Our room was quite large and had a nice balcony and street view. The manager is very helpful and though we didn't eat or drink there, it is convenient to have the bar and breakfast available.
We were a group of four in Zahara de la Sierra for one night to watch a professional bike race. Casa Atardecer was perfect. It was a 5 min walk from restaurants and the bike race. Parking was easy. We asked for and received a late check-out of 2 pm.
Super location right in the middle of the central plaza in Zahara de la Sierra. Very friendly and helpful lady to receive you. The habitación is a whole apartment with ample space for 3-4 people
Great location at the bottom of town with free street parking near by.
Very easy process to get in.
Super clean.
there were three bedrooms!
Shower water pressure was great!
