Having to go home
A lovely old building which could and should be a fantastic hotel - but appears to suffer from poor management. In the morning, we enjoyed a breakfast of kedgeree which was a vast improvement on the previous night’s endeavours. The staff all tried hard, but it is obvious that there is a lack of effective direction and process for them.
On arrival we were informed that we would be charged £30 for having our small dog with us. While a surcharge was indicated at booking, we thought £30 was excessive - it is the same to have an additional guest in the room. Initially we were also informed that he was allowed nowhere apart from the room - however after a discussion with the manager about the hotel’s claims that ‘Dogs are Welcome’ our dog was grudgingly permitted into one end of the lounge area too. Our room was a Deluxe Double, on the ground floor. While a good size, it suffered from a poor layout - for instance the TV is only viewable from the desk, and the suitcase rest is in the far corner to the wardrobe. The room itself was clean, but the decor was very tired. We had a very non-deluxe view of the carpark. The bathroom was a big disappointment - cracked tiles, black mould, poorly fitting loo seat, and a shower over the bath which soaked the room the moment it was used. The restaurant was where Mar Hall Hotel really let themselves down, however. We chose the ‘fine dining’ Cristal Room. While my wife enjoyed her soup starter and lamb main, my terrine starter was bland in the extreme, and my steak, ordered rare, arrived grey, and chewy. While the blood orange sorbet served with pudding was lovely, it didn’t go with the butterscotch tart at all. The cheese selection was unremarkable but inoffensive - although the brie needed another three days before serving at least. Finally the restaurant was unable to procure two espressos - delivering a pot of black coffee instead. Throughout, the service was friendly and willing, but amateurish and disorganised - we saw about 4 staff in the dining room at various stages but they seemed to swap roles constantly - this perhaps explains things like the forgotten orders and long wait for food. To their credit, after a short conversation about the cooking of my steak, we were charged neither for that, nor our puddings.
Location, staff, property, facilities
terrific service, stunning room, food was superb. couldn't not find fault at all loved our stay
having to leave
The atmosphere was homely and every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. I have a knee injury (operation booked), the first room (40) allocated was a considerable distance from Reception, when asked for a suitable alternative the receptionist promptly allocated a more suitable room (14). The Italian restaurant was excellent.
In our bedroom there were only 2 tea bags and the tv unable to be viewed from the bed. It would help having a clock (with alarm) in the room
Beautiful location Friendly staff Grand surroundings Leisure facilities Choice of restaurants and good food including afternoon tea
A bit shabby chic in some places Housekeeping in bedroom could be improved - found an old crisp under armoire, windowsills etc dirty (appreciate they are old)
This hotel took my breath away it was so beautiful and how refreshing to find a 5 star hotel which really is every thing it claims to be, definately be back
wondeful hotel: a great location and impressive old mansion relaxing atmosphere and prefect service
Mar hall really lived up to all the hype we arrived on Thursday 21st of August and were treated like royalty.our room was like a movie set big and beautiful.dinner was amazing thank you mar hall
We did not like checking out
Impressive building in a beautiful setting. Restaurant serves a good variety of dishes. Staff helpful and attentive. Would stay again.
Drinks are fairly expensive.
Food was excellent
Paid over £200 to stay in a room that wasn't part of the hotel room was poor Spa facilities were just a swimming pool - no hot tub or jacuzzi 2 of the saunas weren't working
The ambience of the Hall was quite stunning and the Great Hall was a bustling area when we arrived. Very charming and peaceful. The staff in the bar and restaurant were really friendly and attentive and the food was top notch and really delicious. Our room was comfortable, well appointed and with an enormous bathroom. We dined in the restaurant on the evening we stayed and despite being the only diners in there we were made to feel very welcome and were not hurried at all. The staff were lovely, friendly and engaging and the service was excellent. The food was just delightful and my husband had the best chips and Bearnaise sauce with his steak I think we've ever had, it was divine. I had wonderful venison cooked to perfection and delicious scallops. The food was excellent and presented beautifully. Breakfast was a feast with just about anything you could wish for. The grounds were beautifully kept and the spa and pool was peaceful for a swim and a relax. If you want somewhere upmarket to stay if you have to stay overnight close to Glasgow airport this is definitely a more stylish option than other hotels in the area and much more pleasant.
Some very small points that one wouldn't expect with a 5* establishment. Very minor but tiles in the bathroom were showing signs of dirt. Our shower had a white line of fresh sealant down the centre of the tiles yet other areas where cubicle and unit met the wall and floor tiles were grey with dust and mildew. Cracked floor tile in entrance to the bathroom too and like another reviewer said the loo paper was not of a particularly good quality. Our bed was two singles zipped up, still adequately and perfectly comfortable. The TV cabinet was locate in a strange spot that you could only really watch tv if you sat on the right side of the bed. I appreciate these are small times but when one is paying premium rate for a room for the night one really does expect to see more attention to detail on the finer points of cleanliness and quality. It was also strange such a beautiful bar had a completely incongruous flat screen tv with Sky Sports on in the area, really felt quite out of place and no-one was warching it. would have been better off in a separate sitting room fro those who wished to watch golf and not in what would have otherwise been a very charming and cosy lounge bar. while these things did not particularly detract from our stay which was very enjoyable and peaceful, I left there thinking that if Mar Hall took a few additional minor steps in its presentation and attention to detail it really could be first rate. Slightly overpriced for what one got but very relaxing and charming nonetheless. It doesn't make it on to my "would definitely stay there again / must go back" list but it was overall a pleasant stay.
Even though there was a wedding on, we were not disturbed. There was a pianist playing/singing which was very nice. Swimming pool/fitness excellent Breakfast (buffet) also good quality
Staff great always helpful, food in restaurant was excellant, breakfast plentiful.Building fantastic pool and spa clean
No bottled water provided
The location and the building and the staff.
Generally too expensive for us but we got a good deal for the commonwealth games.
Beautiful views of the Clyde, attentive staff, great café latte, excellent breakfast, lovely grounds, tranquil setting - even with windows open all night due to mini heatwave!
Venue, facilities service all great. Backdrop and grounds superb
Very hot in the wedding Marque, wedding breakfast not so good, better on menu breakfast
Everything, especially how big the rooms are and the stunning location (perfect for a romantic getaway)
This was to celebrate my birthday.. From the moment we arrived until we left everything was terrific. My suite was fabulous with a view of the river and the other two rooms were also great with a view over the gardens. The service, the attitude of the staff and the food was tip top.
So helpful staff and food out of great quality.
Beautiful location. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The service at breakfast could have been more personalised rather than just a help yourself buffet which did not have everything advertised.
