great location , good road network to airport, glasgow ,Loch Lomond, and west coast of scotland via the sea plane service to Loch Lomond ,oban and beyond to Western isles, lovely garden grounds, thou not a golfer , an excellent golf course well deigned with senic views of kilpatrick hills and river clyde estuary
would like to see the garden grounds with better footpaths and seating areas to take in the stunning river and landscape views .however this work is in progress and hopefully soon be brought back to their former glory
The hotel has obviously been recently refurbished and our room was wonderful. the spa was also newly upgraded and clean with an unusually large pool. the dining room and the Great Hall are beautiful, as are the views. The hotel is upmarket, yet not at all stuffy and the staff were friendly and always eager to please.
NO bad experience as such. The reception carpet was a bit shabby compared to everything else, but they are probably due to replace this. MY biggest gripe with all hotels is that breakfast is always spoiled by cheap bread. At least we didn't have to make our own toast though.
The minute we arrived we were upgraded free of charge to a suite. Welcomed with a '40th birthday' plate decorated with chocolates. Fabulous fine dining experience and lovely relaxing time had by all!
Everything was great, a brilliant experience.
Friendly, approachable staff at all times Comfortable, relaxing environment
No slippers in room Room a little cold on arrival
We stayed in a beautiful suite with views over looking the Clyde and snowy old kilpatrick hills, the room felt very romantic, and the perfect place to chill, dinner at the restaurant was very nice and the service was great! With the waiter making great customised cocktails ! Breakfast was lovely! Such a nice venue , would highly recommend!
The food was out of this world and the
So hot in some areas
Location dinner breakie.
I booked this hotel as a surprise for my partner for our anniversary. We only stayed for one night and found the hotel, facilities, restaurant and staff excellent. on arrival we were upgraded to a deluxe room which was a nice surprise. The staff were polite and very accommodating. Cannot wait to visit Mar Hall again!
Bedroom spacious as was bathroom, big shower unit. Dinner was excellent.
No hand rail in shower unit.
Beutifil building and views. Enjoyed the evening meek served in our room. Managment Very helpful the next day.
Receptionist was blunt and forgot to turn the rooms heating on. After the first couple of conversations I gave up. Very cold room spoiled our stay.
The building, grounds & our room were lovely. It was my wife's birthday, so we got some chocolates in our room with 'Happy Birthday' written in chocolate - a nice little touch. The four poster bed was VERY comfy, dinner & breakfast (& spa!) were excellent, and the service overall was top notch. Loved the Mary-Berry-esque waitress - very friendly :)
The staff at reception weren't the most charming. More doing their job instead of being engaging and welcoming. But that's a very minor point! The rest of the trip was excellent.
The overall atmosphere within the hotel
Hotel food & Location
We loved the hotel and the setting - beautiful scenery.
Absolutely everything ! This exceeds its five star rating... Breathtaking views, classy and elegant decor throughout .. Delicious food. Best hotel in Scotland ! Easily.
Having to go home
A lovely old building which could and should be a fantastic hotel - but appears to suffer from poor management. In the morning, we enjoyed a breakfast of kedgeree which was a vast improvement on the previous night’s endeavours. The staff all tried hard, but it is obvious that there is a lack of effective direction and process for them.
On arrival we were informed that we would be charged £30 for having our small dog with us. While a surcharge was indicated at booking, we thought £30 was excessive - it is the same to have an additional guest in the room. Initially we were also informed that he was allowed nowhere apart from the room - however after a discussion with the manager about the hotel’s claims that ‘Dogs are Welcome’ our dog was grudgingly permitted into one end of the lounge area too. Our room was a Deluxe Double, on the ground floor. While a good size, it suffered from a poor layout - for instance the TV is only viewable from the desk, and the suitcase rest is in the far corner to the wardrobe. The room itself was clean, but the decor was very tired. We had a very non-deluxe view of the carpark. The bathroom was a big disappointment - cracked tiles, black mould, poorly fitting loo seat, and a shower over the bath which soaked the room the moment it was used. The restaurant was where Mar Hall Hotel really let themselves down, however. We chose the ‘fine dining’ Cristal Room. While my wife enjoyed her soup starter and lamb main, my terrine starter was bland in the extreme, and my steak, ordered rare, arrived grey, and chewy. While the blood orange sorbet served with pudding was lovely, it didn’t go with the butterscotch tart at all. The cheese selection was unremarkable but inoffensive - although the brie needed another three days before serving at least. Finally the restaurant was unable to procure two espressos - delivering a pot of black coffee instead. Throughout, the service was friendly and willing, but amateurish and disorganised - we saw about 4 staff in the dining room at various stages but they seemed to swap roles constantly - this perhaps explains things like the forgotten orders and long wait for food. To their credit, after a short conversation about the cooking of my steak, we were charged neither for that, nor our puddings.
Location, staff, property, facilities
terrific service, stunning room, food was superb. couldn't not find fault at all loved our stay
having to leave
The atmosphere was homely and every staff member we met was friendly and helpful. I have a knee injury (operation booked), the first room (40) allocated was a considerable distance from Reception, when asked for a suitable alternative the receptionist promptly allocated a more suitable room (14). The Italian restaurant was excellent.
In our bedroom there were only 2 tea bags and the tv unable to be viewed from the bed. It would help having a clock (with alarm) in the room
Beautiful location Friendly staff Grand surroundings Leisure facilities Choice of restaurants and good food including afternoon tea
A bit shabby chic in some places Housekeeping in bedroom could be improved - found an old crisp under armoire, windowsills etc dirty (appreciate they are old)
This hotel took my breath away it was so beautiful and how refreshing to find a 5 star hotel which really is every thing it claims to be, definately be back
