Go rafting or kayaking on the Nantahala River. Drive Wayah Road and have lunch at “Lakes End”, follow the beautiful drive through the gap until the dead end and turn left or right and find a rafting company to rent equipment or go with a guide. It’s about a 30-minute drive and even if you don’t raft, take the scenic drive and go to the take-out location and watch the rafters take the last drop. For a more advanced rafting trip, go to the Ocoee River. Drive to Murphy and stay on Highway 64/74 going west into Tennessee and look for Raft company signs. Wild Adventures is a good one. Call ahead for reservations. Drive about 15 minutes east towards Franklin on Wayah Road and picnic at Wayah Bald. You’ll actually be right by the nationally recognized Appalachian Trail! Go canoeing or kayaking on Lake Nantahala. Go fishing and swimming on the lake or the river. Fish and swim from coves around the lake or anywhere along the scenic Nantahala River or its tributaries! Walk or drive to the end of Little Choga Road and you will find one of the coves of the Nantahala River. On your right hand side before the river you will find small waterfalls and streams. Hike to the private cove owned by
I'm Active Duty Air Force, stationed in Virginia with my Wife and our 3 teenage boys, until I can retire and live part time in the Mountains of NC and part time in Alaska! My ancestors have owned the land our NC cabins sit on since 1836. In fact, my mother grew up there after my Grandfather returned from WWII when there was no electricity and the outhouse was a bench over the creek. I grew up hiking the mountains with my brothers and our BB guns and my Uncle Frank at our family reunions. In 2005 he deeded us a parcel of land and we built our first cabin - Smawlie. We love to come to the cabin and Hike the trails on our own property, and of course, the world famous ones that join them, namely the Bartram and the Appalachian Trails. As you explore the lake, the trails, the rivers, and the mountain roads you'll see why our ancestors settled here. In 2018 - we bought the remainder of Uncle Frank's land - and in his honor built our second cabin - Frank's Landing. Also in that year I started managing my brother Bill's cabin. When we were stationed in Alaska for 6 heavenly years - we purchased a remote parcel of property and have slowly begun to develop it.
This place is the perfect family get away! My large family and I love to explore the miles of private family hiking trails, wade in the streams and play on the lake rope swings. We can't get enough of the white water rafting, mountain bike trails, and boating! In the early 1800's our ancestors discovered the beauty of this secluded area of western North Carolina. My Grandfather helped build the Nantahala Lake Dam after WWII. Little Choga Creek runs right through our backyard into the lake.
