Very easy to get around but I recommend a rental car.
Very easy to get around but I recommend a rental car. Lots to see but some of the locations are definitely within driving distance. Alyeska Resort is a must. Tram rail and seven glacier restaurant is very impressive.

I came specifically for the Alaska Winter Train Ride from Anchorage to Fairbanks. It was a breathtaking beautiful ride! I am planning future trips back to Alaska to take more train tours.
The hotel shuttle driver and another hotel guest recommended the seafood chowder at Forty Ninth State Brewing in downtown Anchorage. The driver offered to take me. I ordered the Alaskan seafood chowder with a lager loaf, a garden salad and their "award winning" smoked wings. Bingo! The seafood chowder was delicious with chunks of seafood in a very flavorful creamy broth! It was very good and the lager loaf was scrumptious. Together they made a great combo!
I can see why the "award winning" smoked wings got an award...they were delicious, even cold, the next day!
Customer service here was top shelf. Kristaleigh took my order and made the recommendations for the wings and lager loaf. She was delightful and professional! Overall, it was a very warm environment and pleasant interaction.
Hats off to the chef/cook at the Lakefront Anchorage Hotel restaurant. I spent one night here and ordered take out. I ordered two salmon tacos (scrumptious and very tasty) and steamed veggies which were flavorful and steamed just right! The bartender who took my order was very helpful and professional. Great customer service!

Alaska is so beautiful but Anchorage doesn't show that at all. The city is so gloomy and is not properly taking care of its people. We did find a few good bars and pubs, but walking around on the street just made us sad. Recommend only staying in Anchorage for activities outside of the city (visit Whittier or go hiking in Chugach State Park!) or to pass through on your next adventure to Denali, Fairbanks, Kenai etc. One activity worth doing in Anchorage is the coastal trail, by bike or by foot, you'll definitely spot an eagle or a moose!

This place is great in many respects.
This place is great in many respects. Sure, its not the Sheraton, but we had a comfortable, clean room and all the staff were absolute legends. Their shuttle service was there to pick us up at the airport and drop us off via a pick up from downtown. They stored our luggage on our departure day too - thanks Anthony and the rest of the Merrill crew! They also provided a hearty breakfast which hit the spot perfectly! On top of all this, they gave us good tips for dining downtown and introduced us to the "Red Solo Cup" ... a lot of fun for travel weary aussies!

Anchorage is an interesting small city.
Anchorage is an interesting small city. The mix of cultures - ancient, indigenous, Russian, and modern influences - can be felt in the various museums and eateries. To get a feel for the city, take a bus or walking tour from the Visitors Center, then visit The Alaska Native Heritage Center, Alaska Museum, and Alaska Aviation Museum to pull the indigenous and modern worlds together. Earthquake Park, Kincaid Park and Flattop Mountain are among the open spaces that give a sense of the geography of the area. Public transportation within the city is good. The wide variety of restaurants gives visitors a range of options. Piper's, Midnight Brewery, Fancy Moose, and 49th State Brewery topped our list.
Anchorage is an excellent base for day trips north and south if time in Alaska is limited. Renting a car may be more desirable than a bus or train tour to provide flexibility. Any outing will be an adventure...Alaskan scenery is outstanding and sometimes overwhelming, even on a rainy day!

Motels/hotels are overpriced and falsely advertised.
Motels/hotels are overpriced and falsely advertised. I.e. breakfasts offerings, non working pools
Sooooo many homeless/druggies EVERYWHERE!!!!
Lots of beautiful museums
Fabulous eateries
Parking places/meters eat quarters as snacks
Train ride to Seward was beautiful
This hotel is directly in front of the Alaskan Railroad Depot in Anchorage and just minutes by taxi from the airport. It is also in downtown Anchorage within walking distance of Avis and local shopping/dining. The hotel is older but has aged gracefully. The owners have maintained the hotel and it is clean. Our room slept 4 with pull out sofa and had a little kitchen area. We used this hotel on three separate occasions for an overnight stay while changing transportation modes during our Alaskan vacation.
I was looking for a place to sleep for the night during a quick stay in Anchorage and this fit the bill. It's a little off the beaten path and not close to downtown or attractions so you would need a car. That being said, Anchorage is an expensive city for lodging and I felt the rate was fair for the accommodations. I did not use the kitchenette or other hotel facilities but they looked good, especially for someone staying several nights or looking to cut down on food costs.
The room was beautiful and comfortable. Amazing pillows. Quiet location near the Anchorage airport with a few walkable restaurants and fast food options nearby. We ate at the nearby Bear Paw Bar & Grill and it was good. We basically needed a bed and shower between a late train from Denali NP and an early morning flight out the next day and this hotel met that need. We weren't there long enough to enjoy any hotel features offered.
It was lucky that we had booked this apartment instead of a hotel. Marty and his family welcomed us so kindly, the apartment is huge and when we asked where we can buy the original salt and pepper shakers, he gave them to us. The accommodation is quiet but close to the airport and the port for the seaplanes. Si it´s the best choise for excursions in the area. Thank you very much for this warm stay.
We arrived late and were not able to spend the entire night due to flight problems on the way from LAX. The Inn is being updated and remodeled and will look very nice when finished. This is the closest hotel to Anchorage Airport, Piper's, the restaurant , is quite nice and their Reuben sandwich was the best I have had in a long time.
Kitchen was fantastic, and the rooms were perfect for my needs as backpacking camper. Could leave bags before/after check in, and plenty of good advice from Max on local area and Alaska in general. If you are touring about Alaska with tent + car this is a great base to use in Anchorage, and the most affordable spot around.
Great location near the Anchorage airport, located on a lake on which there are many float planes. In the morning while eating breakfast at their restaurant, we watched them taking off. Breakfast good, but not provided. Main lobby has a large fireplace and much Alaska wall art.
I waited for more than a half hour to have someone come to the front desk and check me in. I called the hotel to get the shuttle to pick me up at the airport and no one answered the phone for more than a half hour. I paid for a cab from the airport to the hotel
I’m staying in this hotel every time when I’m traveling through Anchorage and it meets all my needs)
Special thanks to the girls on the reception desk! Always nice and super helpful
Transfer to hotel is a great advantage
Clean large room. large bed and a sofa bed for my son. Staff was helpful and friendly. Location while a little far from downtown, it had lot of shops and Starbucks just next to the hotel. overall a nice place
Comfortable, affordable room in Anchorage not far from downtown or the airport, near good restaurants and things to do. We appreciated being able to stay in a local Alaska property rather than a big chain.
A few quirks but overall reasonably quiet, clean, and comfortable. I walked every day to downtown (about a mile) in the Captain Cook hotel area. Good kitchen facilities. Parking was easy.
This clean and comfortable hotel was very welcoming after a long flight. We really liked the location. Close to the airport and it has easy access to downtown and the Seward Highway.
Large hotel. Stayed for 1 night on our way from Anchorage to Homer. Convenient to airport and downtown. Breakfast included. On the whole, filled all my expectations.
The hotel room is big. I like the view from the hotel. The heaters are good. The Wi-Fi is excellent. The TV channels are great! Good location near airport.
