My Single Room was a little Crampy… No Shampoo in Wash Room unless You bought from Reception… Towels were available for a Deposit only…

Breakfast and Dinner was included …Reception was very flexible to any questions and request… Recycling System with Bottles and Cans was very Good…. It was a very Old Building from 1891 which gave The place a Special Atmosphere … If not Unique……

Our room was incredibly loud. The windows felt as though they were open we could hear everything on the street. This included passing cars and people arguing outside all through the night. The hostel was great for socialising but in a bit of a questionable area if travelling alone.

Free breakfast and dinner was a great offer. Not super flavoursome but it was nice to have food available. Also not a large variety for breakfast but the waffles were nice. Really reccommend John's Place down the street.

The hostel is not responsive to messages and queries. I stayed there on an unusual night, however when something unplanned occurred the staff were not great at communicating with the tenants. I was unaware if I would be able to sleep at the hostel in the evening and queried if I should be finding alternative accommodation. Even now 2 days later, I have yet to receive communications from the staff regarding my queries. Understandably the staff were affected by the incident, however with that being said so were the visitors who were staying there. Due to this incident I also did not have full access to my room throughout the day as well as breakfast and dinner were not provided. Once again unforeseen circumstances cannot be controlled, however I was not offered a discount for the lack of services which were included in the cost of my stay. This might be a once off occurrence as staff are usually located at the property for easy communication.

The property was well looked after and the set up of the dorms was really nice. You had your own private area and the curtains on the bed were a good touch. Bathrooms and common areas were kept clean and tidy. The check-in process was easy and well run. Overall the facilities were a great value for money. There are multiple bus stops located outside and around the hostel which made travelling with luggage a breeze.

The fridge was noisy, so we unplugged it at night and there were lots of sirens at night Saturday.

Thoughtful amenities in the rooms (fridge, extension chord, food container, lots of hooks; very clean; window and fan for fresh air; yummy and filling dinner and breakfast included. I liked being in downtown area.

Breakfast had solid options! And dinner was tasty! I really appreciate all the travel guides around that gave me ideas on how to spend my days. Though it would’ve been nice if the butchant gardens were there too… facilities were nice!

The bed frame has wide slats across it. A foam mattress can be comfortable but it needs to be on a hard flat surface, at least plywood. I stayed in a double room on my 3rd night and the bed had a custom built wood frame. I finally got the sleep I came for and paid $40 less for it, but had to check out the next day. Private bathroom or a decent sleep? That's a conundrum. Thought it worth mentioning. Otherwise I enjoy staying at the Ocean Island Inn.

I think this hostel is pretty different in the summer months, but in the winter it’s full of long term stays, mainly men and isn’t the most welcoming. Most of the people staying there were men, so as a solo female backpacker it was pretty intimidating as I was just getting stared at. As a result I didn’t make use of the breakfast and dinner. It’s also right next to a homeless shelter, so walking back to the hostel in the evening feels pretty sketchy. The guy in the room next to me was smoking out of his window every evening and the other room next to me was closed and having maintenance done on it early in the mornings. It just doesn’t have a backpacker vibe in the winter. In all honestly if I hadn’t have paid upfront I’d have moved into alternative accommodation.

The location is great for exploring Victoria and the rooms are reasonably priced.
