The local diet in the Perigord region is very meaty and traditional places like this are a bit challenging if you do not eat meat. The room is beautiful, old and charming. Everything squeaks, the shower is not perfect, the old wooden floor is slippery etc etc. So, if you want everything sterile and like any big hotel, don't go. If you like character and enjoy the charm, including the stray cats and the donkey calling early in the morning, do book for a couple of days!

Staying at la Commanderie is like going back in time 50 years. It is a gorgeous old house with an incredible history. Sadly the ageing owner is very much on her own and finds it hard to get local people to work for her. So, here and there the place is run down and the menu is a bit limited. Having said that, it is really super charming and nice for a couple of days, the hamlet is beautiful, Sarlat is just about half an hour away and beautiful Tessasson is only 10 minutes away.

Charming house that brings you back in time. We really enjoyed the fact that it is an historical building (and everything that comes with it). Also the garden around the house is very enjoyable. The host is incredibly kind and welcoming. Breakfast and dinner were very good and home made with mostly local products. We would definitely come back.

The location is perfect for a relaxing,peaceful stay.Lots to see within an easy drive. We ate dinner there every evening and all the meals were excellent. Madame is a charming host, this was my 4th stay and I will certainly be back.

The area is beautiful and the best part was the building which is old and full of character. Staying there was a relaxing experience and lovely to be able to walk around the gardens. Great for taking our dog and the owner welcoming and kind. Lovely food done in traditional manner. This is our favourite stopover in France and we look forward to visiting again. Highly recommended for those who like character places with traditional atmosphere.

Breakfast was excellent, we particularly liked the freshly made coffee[so many hotels now use machines]. Dinner was excellent every evening, with a good choice. The ambience is superb and made for a perfect stay.

It was a lovely old building, but unfortunately some of the fittings are rather dated, or not working. We had problems with turning on the lights in our room, and the sockets we used to charge our phones turned out not to be working. The WiFi signal was very weak, and the access was not password protected.

Great location near Lascaux, and near the motorway. Beautiful, characterful old building, with very spacious rooms, in the heart of a typical rural village. Lovely antique furniture and Persian rugs. Huge , well-maintained grounds and swimming-pool. Not too far from Montignac for bars and restaurants.

The Architecture

It is a handsome looking house from the outside but the inside is like stepping into something that has not been updated since 1950 !! Dated and run down

The hotel completely ignored my confirmed booking. Even after the lady at reception found my correct booking on her computer, she said "I have no room for you, I can't do anything". No word of regret, apology etc. She even said it was my fault because I booked alteady in 2022. To her credit: she rang another hotel to find me an alternative, which was not great, but okay.
