Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1–10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We're currently testing a weighted review system in Malta and Iceland (excluding hotel and vacation rental chains). For properties in these countries, the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate "subscores" in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

Exceptional service. Wonderful experience of a ryokan with traditional and Western fare. Stayed in the annex which is a detached traditional bungalow away from the main building. Really enjoyed the solitude and private onsen. Excellent proximity to spectacular views of Mt Fuji.

United States of AmericaThat we couldn't stay longer!
What an incredible and memorable experience for our family. The Ryokan is situated on the side of the hill, with lovely views of the surrounding area. The building, especially the hallway to the baths, is stunning. The staff were warm, welcoming and very helpful. Our room was better than we imagined and we loved having our own bath, as well as the sitting area that looked out to the garden and hills. The meals were excellent and we will never forget our 2 hour, 9 course dinner. Our boys are 15 and 17 and ate everything they were served. Our youngest checked the menu and declared he tried 36 things he had never eaten before. We also enjoyed the public baths and the salon, where we all made use of the massage chairs.

AustraliaGora Kadan was a relaxing recharge between the busy sightseeing of Tokyo and Kyoto. We thoroughly enjoyed the wonderfully traditional experience including savouring the delicious kaiseki dinner, bathing in our serene private onsen, wearing yakuta and sleeping on futon beds.

United States of AmericaWhile Gora Kadan is quite pricy, I'd say it's worth it for the beauty and service.
Our room was wonderful, the private onsen was so relaxing. Breakfast was amazing, one of the best we had during our whole trip in Japan. The service was above and beyond, suggesting and driving us to activities in the rain before check in time. Plus dinner and breakfast service was exceptional and a really special experience overall. We also had the pool to ourselves in the morning and were able to swim laps before breakfast.

Saudi ArabiaDinner included in half-board is also traditional Japanese, it’s not a bad thing of course, but to me because Im picky in food I didn’t like much of the dishes. I would have preferred if you get the chance to chose between western or Japanese style food, but again they want to give the guest to maximum Japanese way in living. One thing to add, dinner is served as a set menu and takes more than an hour to reach the dessert. If time can be shortened would be better, because some guest might want to have more time in exploring other things at the hotel, or just be in peace. All in all, these 2 mentioned are just minor things.
The best Traditional Japanese experience in all aspects. So peaceful and calm. Close to Gora station and cable train.

United States of AmericaOne of the nicest hotel experiences I’ve ever had and I have traveled extensively. The grounds and architecture are extremely relaxing. The rooms are beautiful and ours overlooked a wonderful Japanese garden. Our room assistant was extremely sweet and served us a delicious dinner and breakfast in our room. The topper is the private onsen. I wish we could have stayed a second night

Amazing experience. Extremely well kept and beautifully designed. The hotel is set against a cliff and beautiful. Lovely modernist architecture, with lots of wood, and creative use of glass and open space. Staff was amazing. Dinner and breakfast served in your room. We booked a suite (Fuji) and it was really nice., immaculate, very well maintained, an incredibly restful space. The private onsen with garden was serene and gorgeous. There was also an amazing public bath. Service was thoughtful and kind. On check out, when the staff found out we were headed to the hakone open air museum, they offered a ride there. Then they picked us up after 2 hours from the museum with our bags, and dropped us at gora station!! I hope to go back some day.

GermanyUnfortunately our experience was influenced negatively by our host, who was very young (in his early 20s) and hardly spoke any English. We had to explain everything many times and misunderstandings occurred from this. He felt like he's on training rather than a proper host. We would have appreciated to be assigned to an English-speaking staff member. The shower in the bathroom was old and chalky. I pointed it out, to which I got an answer that the room is very old. Well if you can update the prices, surely you can update the bathrooms too. And more about the price - it is extremely expensive, which of course we knew, however did not expect the 10% charge on top of our stay for an extra hour of check out time.
This is probably the nicest onsen hotel in Hakone, so if you're looking for the best - book it! Beautiful traditional rooms, kimonos, slippers and even socks - all provided by the hotel, you don't need to bring anything. We had our own bath in our private garden which we enjoyed, as well as the Grand Baths. We especially loved the food - it is proper fine dining kaiseki twice a day (breakfast and dinner) served on beautiful plates, in your own room. On our check out day, we got a private drive from the hotel to one of the rural sushi restaurants which we appreciated. The staff at the reception were very kind and helpful, and spoke good English.
