The wifi could be stronger in the room. Hotel provided an external router for our room but it did not seem to work.

Quite a spacious Japanese traditional room, a heater to warm up the room as the weather was quite chilly. The staff were helpful too. An area on the 1st floor to play simple games which turned out to be quite fun as it was raining and we did not explore outside much.

A good base to explore the Mashu and Kussharo Lakes

Slightly more expensive than our other stays in Japan, but this is a fairly remote location with not many accommodation options. Plus, rooms are really large.

Probably the largest room we had throughout our trip in Japan. This was a traditional Japanese style room with tatami mats, a low table and floor seating as well as western-style table and chair. It also has a fridge and an electric kettle. Free bicycle rental was amazing and we used their bikes to explore the shores of lake Kussharo. Staff are excellent and speak English very well. The hotel also has a public onsen that is open 24 h (you get a yukata, slippers, and towels in your room), a small souvenir shop, some games etc. Overall may appear a bit outdated, but the level of comfort is high. You can also order breakfast. Walking distance to the JR Mashu Station (about 1 km) with connections to Kushiro. Public transportation here is somewhat limited, but we managed: bus/train to Kawayu Onsen to see Mt. Io, bus to Lake Mashu 1st observatory + hike to Mt. Mashu, then return by hitchhiking, Wakoto Peninsula and Kotan Onsen by bike.
