Accommodation in Rangala

We’re a couple from Singapore enjoying our prolonged early mid life crisis backpacking across Sri Lanka. We’ve generally been touched by the warmth and kindness of the people. One of our stopovers was the Ferndale Retreat nested within the Knuckles Mountain Range. It was the best stay we had in Sri Lanka, with warm hospitality, farm to table food and the most peaceful environment you can get. Special shoutouts to: 1. Sujith Our butler who was meticulous towards our needs and has the right timely attention to detail that speaks volumes of his extensive experience across the hospitality industry. He made sure we wanted for nothing with respect to food and beverage, and housekeeping amenities. We love the conversations with him where there was good exchange of culture, knowledge and learning from each other e.g the delectation of our palates was enhanced knowing the sources of the ingredients and how they transform from farm to plate. 2. Charaka Our knowledgeable guide who knows the area so well and puts us at ease during our hike. He was attuned to our needs and pace during the hike and we got to see many things thanks to his eagle eyes e.g he could spot the leaf nosed lizard even after it had camouflaged its texture and colour to blend with the trunk it’s on；or the Sri Lankan national bird hiding in the bushes; which red berries are edible (by eating them on the spot) and which are poisonous; identifying the plants and trees whose sap and leaves we take for granted as staples etc. He not only helped us hike safely through winding undulatingly uneven paths, but also imparted extensive knowledge of the geography of the mountain range and how/why it’s a UNESCO World Heritage area. 3. Jason The tall and assuring guy who made sure that our needs are met throughout our stay. If Ferndale operations were an orchestra, Jason would be the maestro, conducting its quiet symphony of harmonizing with local produce and consuming nature’s resources sustainably.

So peaceful!! This was a true highlight of our trip. The beds in the tents were soooo comfy, we ended up extending for two extra night. We went on a really great hike with our guide Banu too who was so knowledgeable, it really topped off the experience for us. If you’re looking for something off the tourist track and really in nature this is definitely the place to book.

Our stay at Royal Mountain Edge, Knuckles from 16/05/2025 was an unforgettable experience! It began with a guided hike organized by the team, tailored perfectly to our preferences. The hike was magnificent, with an excellent and caring guide. The packed lunch provided during the hike was both delicious and energy-packed—just what we needed. After the hike, we returned to Royal Mountain Edge, where we enjoyed a refreshing dip in the infinity pool followed by warm tea and local snacks. In the evening, they surprised us with a cozy bonfire, serving local brews as we warmed ourselves by the flames. For dinner, the BBQ platter was absolutely delicious and satisfying. The silence time began at 11:00 PM, but until then, we immersed ourselves in the serene forest surroundings and its enchanting nightlife. The rooms were spacious, cozy, and impeccably clean, offering a perfect retreat after an adventurous day. The next morning, we woke up early to watch the sunrise near the pool, accompanied by a hot cup of coffee graciously served by the staff. Breakfast was a delightful spread of local delicacies, including milk rice, lunu miris, chicken curry, and fresh fruits. It was the perfect way to end our magical stay at Royal Mountain Edge, Knuckles. Highly recommended for nature lovers and adventure seekers alike!

My wife and I spent two nights here, but as soon as we arrived, we wished we had stayed longer. This is honestly one of our favourite places that we have ever stayed. The location is stunning and it has the most incredible view. Amila, Laurence, Ruwan, were all incredibly friendly and made the experience even more special. And the owners, Sam and Anthony, made you feel right at home :) We can't wait to come back and stay even longer next time!

Everything was absolutely perfect from start to finish. The food was delicious, the hospitality was exceptional, and the bed was super comfortable. The place was spotless, the views were stunning, and I genuinely felt so welcomed and taken care of. The host went above and beyond and even organized an amazing hike in the Knuckles Mountains, which I can highly recommend. The next day, we went tea picking together and visited a tea factory — such a unique and beautiful experience. I also got to watch and learn in the kitchen and picked up a lot about local cooking. If you’re staying in this area, I honestly couldn’t recommend this place more. Thank you for an unforgettable stay!

Getting there by private car was a challenge, google maps is simply not accurate. Best way is to contact resort before. The team is outstanding, booked only a day before and they managed to make us feel at home. Will come back for sure

The Location is Away From the Busy Cities and Very Peaceful Environment with Excellent in house Chef who Cooks Indian food to a Next Level. Tea Estate Surrounded by Mountains. The Pond and the Summer hut was a Great Addition to Enjoy a Nice Cold One.

What a beautiful place. We have never experience this before! The people are so helpfulll, the lodge is perfect and cleaning every day! Cosy interior, great breakfast. And dinners perfect made by a great cook! The hikes in the Knuckles were very special and no tourists, only nature and lunch by waterfalls! 4 dogs came walking with us every day, also private natural pool included! We were there 4 nights but didn’t want to leave the trogan nuckles, we will come back for sure

The dog that was guarding us was very friendly, so we didn't feel lonely at all.

Exceptional views, the host was very accommodating and provided a lot of information about hiking and sightseeing. Great food cooked by the lady cook, though pricey.

It was all so great I don't even know where to start from. The staff were super helpful and friendly (every single one of them), the food was Michelin-Star-Restaurant level, especially the Sri Lankan options, the rooms were very very clean, spacious, and so comfy that it was extremely relaxing even just staying on the balcony and listen to the birds, without any other sound disturbing in the surroundings. We stayed in the Garden View Chalet, and it was wonderful to be surrounded by all that nature (no TV in the rooms, that's a big plus!). The yoga lessons and the massages were also great, especially the afternoon yoga sessions with Rahul. In brief, if you really want to switch off and actually relax and take care of yourself, skip all the other places in the Hill Country and stay here instead. :)

This amazing resort was my safe haven. I was a solo traveler, with no travelling experience in Sri Lanka at all. The staff here went above and beyond to accommodate for all my requests. The property and views were completely breathtaking. I can honestly say, the food was the best I had during my entire time in Sri Lanka. It was authentic, fresh and for a food lover, an experience I cherish.🙏

The location and staff are incredibly good—everything was wonderful. If you enjoy nature and getting away from it all, this is the place for you. The staff are very attentive and ensure you have everything you need. My only recommendation is to get in touch beforehand; if you are driving your own car, you won't be able to navigate the final stretch of the road, as it isn't suitable for standard vehicles. The staff will come to pick you up in a 4x4.
