The peace here is profound. Don Mario offers a two-hour boat tour through the village, guiding guests through the reed beds while explaining how generations of Uros have used these reeds to cook, build, and navigate the lake they hold sacred. It was deeply moving and fascinating to learn about a way of life that feels both ancient and fragile, yet still very much alive. Both Mario and Lea are also gifted artisans. Don Mario creates drawings that beautifully capture the lake and its culture, while Mama Lea transforms these designs into pillow covers, table runners, and wall hangings that are truly lovely and meaningful keepsakes. A few practical notes: the showers are gravity-fed and solar-heated, which means lower water pressure and the hottest water in the late afternoon. The midday sun is intense, so wide-brimmed hats and sunscreen are essential. Finally, a word about Uros itself. Before arriving, I read many reviews dismissing the islands as a tourist trap rather than a genuine community. While tourism clearly plays an important role in the local economy, it is equally clear that this is a real, living community with deep roots. The Uros have existed here for countless generations, passing down knowledge, skills, and craftsmanship. They are skilled fishermen and masters of using reeds for nearly everything imaginable.
