We went for the Christmas market - and we had heard good things from other family members. The city is very nice, especially the old part of town. Some great back-streets perfect for exploring! We found a couple of great restaurants this way! The market was wonderful- lots of stalls selling a variety of ornaments to suit all pockets - and of course, Bratwurst and Glühwein in abundance!! The river promenade (Schlacter) is also great at this time of year with a 'medieval' market - lots of hand-made goods from leather, wood turners, metal work to mead, hats, and did I mention Glühwein?? Getting around Bremen is really easy - the trams are frequent and plentiful in number. And bang on time! All of the stops have real-time digital displays showing time to the next tram, and they run all through the night! Getting something to eat and drink during the Christmas market is not a problem! There are heaps of stalls doing Bratwurst, deep fried fish (BackFische), Waffles, doughnuts and Flammkuchen - there are vegetarian stalls and surrounding the markets, coffee shops and bars. We found two excellent places to eat - one in the old town, along BottcherStrasse called Flett and the 2nd in Schnoor called Kleiner Olymp. Both did not need reservations (although you can if you want) and both offer local specialities. Flett gets busy from mid-afternoon through to late so you may have to wait to get a table. The food in both is great, good priced and tasty and all washed down with some excellent German beer! There are river boats offering trips up and down the river, although do check that your chosen boat has an English guide! We didn't - but it was still a nice trip!! We'll be going back again, definitely!
The Beck's Brewery tour is well worth a visit. You need to book in advance during the busy season but we just showed up on the day, just on time for the English speaking tour. About 12euro each for the tour and a few free beers! Well worth it. Afterwards it was lovely to stroll along the dock looking at the ships, many of which are converted into restaurants selling a variety of foods including pancakes, seafood etc. Continue this walk to the city hall. Beautiful architecture and buildings here. You can reach it by going through the famous windy little street Bottcherstrase. The city centre was within walking distance of our Hotel and there was a lovely Irish pub right around the corner called Paddy's. It had some Irish staff who were very friendly and good drink promotions. You can also bring in your own food and enjoy it indoors. It had some good music too on the speaker system, old school rock, indie, that sort of thing. Would highly recommend a trip to the city of Bremen for a short stay, the fact that it was snowing also added to our experience. It was polite to attempt to say a few words in German to staff in restaurants but almost everyone had very good English so communication was not difficult just simple ask "Sprechen Sie Englisch?" And don't hesitate to grab a bratwurst from the many kiosks that line the streets
The transfer from airport to Bremen takes 15 minutes from a tram station located right outside the airport entrance. I have never traveled anywhere easier to get to. Our hotel (Swissotel) was on the tram route. Get off at Herdentor and hotel is 10 metres on your left. Bremen has a lovely old square and quaint streets right from a fairy tale. It is very easy to get around on foot or use the trams. The Alstadt and Schnoor Districts were beautiful. We did eat German cuisine but find it not to our tatse. We ate in a Turkish restaurant called Tendure twice. Just 5 minutes walk from the hotel. we also ate at a place called Celona down by the river. Beautiful pasta and burgers. We went on the Becks Brewery tour. Would recommend.
The area of Bremen we stayed was very central, with great access to shopping and the Christmas Markets (there are two markets one close to the center of town the other running along the river), with some beautiful buildings, and history, food was not too expensive, but beware if you are a tea drinker, most cafe's charged 4.95 euros per cup, it cost us 15.00 euro for 3 teas !!!!( I would suggest you bring your own teabags,) disgraceful, other than that I have to say our experience was a positive one.
We choose bremen because of the Christmas markets, we herd it was the best place to go and it was :) the atmosphere was amazing, they were huge, so much to do and see, even hired bikes one day just to get about as it took a few days to get around them ... on the down side, unfortunately bremen dosnt have a lot to offer, the shopping is good a huge town centre, but it's lack of bars and nightlife for a younger crowd would be quite board, but can't fault the Christmas markets they made our trip special :) so if any one is considering going I'd advise them to go for that was definitely an experience not to forget.
There are some very authentic German food places by the river. Great place behind the Starinn that is all wood frame and yummy schnitzel. Schnoor is very cute and the 2 hour city tour is worth it. The Christmas markets are supposed to be the best in the world so would love to do that in the future. Bremen outside of the city center isn't that nice
