Botanica Homestay is a classic, stylishly decorated property surrounded by beautiful mature gardens. The hosts are fabulous and have not overlooked any details in making this a great place to stay for a home base while in Wellington. We stayed in the Garden Studio. It was very clean and private, and had everything we needed. Warning for people with mobility issues and/or a lot of luggage: there are a lot of stairs and a steep climb to get from the street to the top of the garden - but that would be my only consideration in recommending. Everything else was perfect. Not once did we say that we wished we would have stayed somewhere else. Some pretty amazing places for morning coffee and breakfast/brunch/lunch nearby - recommend Polo or Scorch-O-Rama. Also near a grocery store for other needs. Having a rental car in this location would also be very helpful - we did not use local public transport, so cannot comment on that. Easy access to Central Business District - but parking can get pricey there - and other sites in and around the city, such as the Botanic Gardens and Otari-Wilton's Bush. And day trips around to Cape Palliser, Kapiti and Palmerston North area. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

Private, comfortable studio. Is set in Wellington, 0.9 mi from Wellington Zoo. Some units feature a seating area for your convenience. Communication was excellent though i never did meet the owners. That suited me fine. Distance from town was a little more than i would have liked but it also meant i was in a quiet suburban area. View from the lounge was nice. Bed was comfy. Bathroom very posh.

Compact CBD with plenty of views. People extremely friendly and helpful. The only sad thing is all the buildings are a shade of grey apparently due to some stupid council law. C’mon guys perk up. Yr the capital of NZ lets add some colour and make it friendly. Definately book the Hop on Hop off bus. Loved the rose garden and museum. Mojo is best spots for coffee and breakfast. All the weatherboard houses are awesome
Thoroughly recommend the hop on hop off bus. For us it was like having your own personal guide as we were the only ones on board! Great commentary and you could ask questions about what interested you in particular. We had pre booked a tour of the Houses of Parliament which was good. We also did the Te Papa and Wellington Museums but could have spent much longer at both had we had more time? We did the cable car up and back which was good. Amazing views from Victoria Look Out. We ate at The Crab Shack, which as the name suggests specializes in Crab! Excellent. Wellington is quite a walkable city and relatively easy to find your way around.
'Small' creative city where you can walk to every part. Easy bus system too. Plenty taxis available. Beautiful water front with walkways, sculptures, etc. Cuba street for cafe's, restaurants, shops, grunge-alternative street (but also has upmarket restaurants etc.). Lambdon Quay for the chain stores and upmarket department store and business centre and the cable car up to the Botanical gardens. Courtney Place for theatre, movies, dinner (in the 2 streets off Courtney Place). Te Papa museum with excellent exhibits. Several other museums.... Best coffee in NZ is to be had here! And the food is pretty good too. My favourite is 178 Cuba street. Most places have good gluten-free, vegetarian and vegan options.
We are not city lovers, but we enjoyed Wellington. There are many hikes, but you have to spend a lot of time getting through the city before the proper hike starts. Zealandia was special. You can return the next day for free with your previous days ticket.
Te Papa has a fabulous display of World War 1, that is a total must see. We went to the Circa Theatre and enjoyed "The Ghosts of Christmas Parties" political satire, and (for kiwi travellers) deliriously funny. There are so many great eateries in Wellington, spoilt for choice. We particularly enjoyed Oida? -a greek restaurant at the bottom end of Broadway in Seatoun. We made the mistake of initally picking up a Thrifty rental at the airport for the day which was neither clean nor cheap, but the next day found Go rentals. They will collect you from the airport, and their cars are spotless, brand new, and half the price. The tram will take you from the city up to the gardens, and an enjoyable excursion.
Such a beautiful city, so self contained. You need to stay a minimum of two days at least. There is do much to see like the war museum, Mt Victoria look out point, Sunday's farmer's market, Victoria tunnel, Basement market, etc. The eating outlets are massive from the local to Vietnamese, Indian, Chinese and Mexican. We tried out KC's cafe and take away at Condenay street. It was worth the money. Don't forget to walk along the harbour. What a sight!
