We loved the Museum of the Moving Image. I am a frequent museum go-er but had never heard of this museum. Since it was right around the corner from where we were staying, my husband and I decided to go -- and were we ever surprised and impressed. We could have spent all day there. Words can't describe how great this place is. If you are a movie or TV buff, this is a must-see. Even if you are not (like me), you should still go. I'm sure you'll be bowled over with this place.
A very hectic place, but the parks make it up for the chaos, the skyline is impressive, and there is always something to do. There are people from everywhere, so it is an interesting cultural experience.
Brooklyn is a very busy city. There are many options for activities and sightseeing. The traffic is very, very busy and the parking is almost impossible. If you know where you are going and what time you need to be there you must definitely factor in your commute.
Long Island City is a very mixed neighbourhood - industrial, working class, and areas being gentrified. Not everyone would feel comfortable walking around the neighborhood. But there is hip stuff developing.
Driving is terrible, no one uses their blinker, and the walkers and bikers just go right in front of you. No one looks before crossing the street and no one waits for the crossing signs. Literally people with strollers just walking out into traffic without a care and the no crossing sign lit. Be aware of the Statute of Liberty tours. I was scammed out of $164 with NY Iconic Tours. They knowingly sold me tickets for a broken boat and refused to respond after 23 calls, 3 phone messages, 2 FB messages, and 3 emails. Parking is nonexistent and parking fees are outrageous. If NYC is your only city destination, then fly and use Uber. I was only there for 24hrs, it was $90 to park a small car and still paid $70 in Ubers. If I had driven everywhere, I would have spent even more on parking and more time looking for parking than actually touring. I like the 24hr restaurants.
Getting around Brooklyn and greater New York was fairly easy. The Diner at the corner was adequate for a tasty breakfast. Friendly staff The attendant at the Underground was very helpful and gave the best guidance on the use of the underground trains There was no retail shopping near the hotel, had to go into New York to make purchases.
