This vibrant place has been home to immigrants, capitalists, artists and many others, and it has had its share of the impact of WWII bombs and the Cold War decades. It is a place famous for being the birthplace of counterculture in Germany.
Your tour will begin at the Oberbaumbrücke bridge, and you’ll go past the “SO36”, the eastern half of the district, named after the old postal code. You’ll see the remains of the Berlin wall and also observe how abandoned buildings have been put to creative use as art hubs, with graffiti and street art. You’ll see the graceful Gorlitzer Park, which is one of Berlin’s most popular green spaces and the 120-year old Markthalle 9, the market hall where locals trade in artisanal and food products.
You’ll also observe Turkish culture as it abounds in shops and markets that sell flowers, spices and takeaway foods. There, you can sample the foods such as deep-fried spinach and cheese Gözleme, falafel sandwiches, and freshly pressed pomegranate juice.
At the end of the tour, you’ll get the chance to join the conversation surrounding the controversy of a riverside development that threatens the authenticity of Kreuzberg.
