You might get caught in the occasional downpour, but that’s all part of a visit to the UK. Come December, the UK turns into a winter wonderland in preparation for the holiday season. The weather outside might be frightful, but the cozy pubs, comfort food, and Christmas markets should have you feeling all warm and fuzzy on the inside.

Monthly weather and travel tips for United Kingdom
December’s Christmas festivities may have come and gone, but there are still a handful of reasons to celebrate in the UK in January. Gray skies and plenty of drizzle will do their best to dampen spirits, so an umbrella and raincoat are essential at this time of year.
The new year in the UK begins with the London Parade, when marching bands and troupes of scouts liven up the streets of the West End. Elsewhere in the UK, January sees Scotland raise a glass to the life and work of poet Robert Burns. When you’re not celebrating with the locals, the wetter January weather lends itself perfectly to exploring some of the UK’s fascinating museums and art galleries.

The weather is usually at its coldest in the UK inFebruary, so it’s the best time to visit if you’re hoping for snow, particularly in Scotland where there’s a chance you can catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights too.
With temperatures low and some rainy forecasts, the February events calendar in the UK may be on the quiet side, but the Six Nations Rugby Championship will be in full swing. International home games are played in London, Edinburgh, and Cardiff. There’s also the chance to embrace York’s rich history and heritage with the Yorvik Viking Festival. If it’s getting a bit too chilly outside, you’ll find plenty of restaurants and pubs to cozy up in across the UK.

Flowers beginning to blossom offer a hint of the warmer months ahead, but average March temperatures in the UK tend to stay around a cool high of 50ºF. This can easily drop down to the 30s, so it’s best to be on the safe side with an umbrella and warm clothing.
The start of spring brings a lot of events, like the week of traditional Irish and Celtic music as part of Belfast's Féile an Earraigh festival. Saints’ days are also cause for celebration in March. Watch parades and concerts in Wales for St. David’s Day, or join in with neighboring Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities in Belfast, London, and cities all over the UK.

An umbrella is always a good idea in the UK, particularly with plenty of April showers in the forecast. These intermittent bursts of rain make way for warmer temperatures, sunnier skies, and fresh air typical of spring in the UK – ideal conditions for walks and hikes in the countryside.
Make the most of the warmer weather by watching—or even taking part in—the London Marathon, or cheering on your favorite team as the Scottish Premiership draws to a close. With the English Premier League also nearing its final games, it’s easy to get swept up in sports, but save some time for other April activities too. There’s a week-long literary festival in Shakespeare’s hometown of Stratford, the annual Belfast Film Festival, and music and comedy during Wales’s Laugharne Weekend.

With the weather well warmed up, the UK takes to the outdoors for shows, soccer finals, and all kinds of festivals. National holidays in England at either end of May mean roads and public places get busier, as locals take advantage of the last month of spring and its longer days.
A big date on the calendar for many football fans in England is the FA Cup Final, decided on a (hopefully) sunny Saturday at Wembley Stadium. Elsewhere in the country, you’ll have a choice of festivals and shows, from three weeks of art performances in Brighton, to the Lake District’s Kenswick Mountain Festival, and the beautiful Chelsea Flower Show. Wales’s Hay Festival is a must for art and literature lovers, while Belfast puts runners to the test on the first Sunday of May each year.

Both hot weather and a busy events calendar make June one of the best times to visit the UK. With festival season and the pub garden scene in full swing, you’ll want to pack some sunscreen for the long sessions outside in the British and Northern Irish summertime.
June’s festivals are some of the hottest tickets around in the UK. You’ll have lots of options with the likes of Glasgow’s West End Festival, the Gŵyl Gregynog classical music fest in Wales, the Isle of Wight Festival, and the legendary Glastonbury. Festivals aside, Pride events and the Trooping the Color ceremony should both be high on your to-do list in London, as well as kicking back and enjoying the weather in parks dotted around the UK.

As the UK’s hottest month, July brings long days filled with all kinds of fun outdoor activities. Sunscreen is recommended, whether you’re sightseeing in the city, exploring the countryside, or chilling on the beach.
Tennis fever grips the UK as world-class competitors battle it out on the grass courts at Wimbledon. Cheering on your favorite player while eating strawberries and cream is an essential British summertime experience. Up in the north of England, locals celebrate all things agricultural at the Great Yorkshire Show, while Wales puts on a show of its own with the week-long International Musical Eisteddfod festival. If you’re in Scotland, expect some crowds in the seaside towns as the school breaks begin, and an even bigger turnout across the North Channel for Belfast Pride.

The UK may be into its last month of summer in August, but the jovial atmosphere shows no sign of slowing down. The weather plays its part too, with average temperatures coming in at a daily high of 70ºF. Pack plenty of sunscreen, especially if you’re in the more southern spots where temperatures can creep into the mid 70s and even into the high 80s.
August is a busy festival period up and down the UK, so it’s worth checking ahead so you can either join the parties or steer clear of the busier roads around the cities hosting them. The likes of Reading, Leeds, Brecon Beacons, and Edinburgh are all home to major festivals in August. Never one to miss out, London also hosts its own party in the form of Notting Hill Carnival, while in Liverpool you can celebrate the city’s greatest musical export during International Beatleweek.

September sees the weather starting to cool and leaves beginning to fall as the UK enters autumn. Milder temperatures make it an ideal time of year to roam around the countryside and admire the trees as they change to an array of reds, oranges, and yellows.
For something a little more fast-paced, there’s Tyneside’s Great North Run—the biggest half-marathon in the world when it comes to the number of runners—or the 44-mile mountain bike course that makes up the Brecon Beast. After challenging outdoor pursuits like these, it’s important to bundle up as the evening temperatures drop. Head down to the catwalks at London Fashion Week to get some tips on autumn and winter wear from leading designers and fashion figures.

The UK is well into autumn by October, so expect grey skies, chilly weather, and rain. The locals don’t let that stop them from going out for Halloween parties, food festivals, and countryside walks though. With a raincoat on and an umbrella in hand, you should be well equipped to join them and take in the best of the UK in autumn.
If you don’t mind the rain, there’s plenty that makes the UK worth a visit this time of year. London rolls out the red carpet for its annual Film Festival, the homely Belfast pubs will look all the more inviting, and your photos of Edinburgh landmarks will have an effortlessly cool, mysterious vibe.

Short days, dreary skies, and lots of rain don't make the UK the most attractive place to visit in November. But with cold weather come less crowds, which makes exploring the UK’s cities, sites, and landmarks a little bit easier.
One event bringing some warmth and color to the otherwise grey skies of the UK is Guy Fawkes Night on November 5, when locals commemorate a failed treason attempt with fireworks, bonfires, and sparklers. Remembrance Day on November 11 is an important date in the UK, honoring fallen soldiers with moments of silence and commemorative events. The city streets start to fill up towards the end of November in the lead up to Black Friday sales. Whether you want to brave the crowds to pick up some bargains or stay well away from the busy shopping areas is up to you.

December in the UK mainly revolves around Christmas and New Year celebrations towards the end of the month. Holiday cheer might have you feeling warm inside, but a thick jacket and gloves are also a good idea to ward off the winter cold.
You’re likely to see Christmas lights whichever city you’re in. Most will have been on since November, but the shop windows and sparkling lights along London’s Oxford Street are real showstoppers. If you’ve already finished all your Christmas shopping, then head to Winter Wonderland—in London or Cardiff—for all kinds of holiday activities, like ice skating, carnival rides, and drinking mulled wine. The nation’s New Year parties will be just around the corner. Close out the year with a rendition of Auld Lang Syne during Scotland’s Hogmanay celebration.

For the best weather during your trip to the UK, visit between May and September. While sunny skies are never certain, these months—July and August in particular—are the warmest across all regions in the UK. You’ll feel the heat most in England, where temperatures can reach into the 80s, while Wales and Northern Ireland tend to have slightly cooler climates. In contrast, temperatures drop in December – most noticeably in Scotland, which is your best bet if you’re after some snow.

Ideal location if travelling North and looking to break a long journey. Plenty of choice for food options and a welcome breakfast even though the 'hot' choice was barely luke warm!
its a fabulous city with so much history and variety. Our tour of the old vaults was very interesting and were delighted with our Burns Night dinner on board the Britannia
Went to visit family but did some shopping at Glen Mccarther outlet definitely worth a visit. Lovely clean outlet with lots of choice.
A beautiful friendly town with plenty of places to eat and drink. We stayed in the White Hart and food was cheap and cheerful and certainly no complaints. Once you’ve parked you can walk to anywhere easily. Highly recommend for a quiet friendly break away.
Had a friend who lived here, and visited several times with friends. Seen quite a bit of London, on foot and public transport like the underground
Absolutely loved the Botanical Gardens - will be going back later in spring and in summer. The city centre is a bit of a mix, but some interesting architecture. We really enjoyed the Millennium Gallery - the metal work gallery has some astonishing pieces. Nice cafes.
A really Welsh coastal nice town, with plenty of character as well as a Castle and nice beach. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, with a good range of shops on the High street. The town is very accessible, friendly na d has plenty of parking.
Quaint village right on the Caledonian Canal, Friendly pubs and plenty of good walks.
Strange disjunction between East and West Cowes. The floating bridge linking them is an interesting but slow and inconsistent link. The harbour with constant boating activity is always fascina.ting.
A lovely small town with good facilities located on the seaside A number of good restaurants, coffee shops and pubs
Been a few times but always a pleasure. Seems to be new bars and restaurants opened since last visit. CoHo bar and El Pincho restaurant we’re both great. Friendly staff everywhere we went. Easy to get around with frequent buses and taxis.
A wonderful place full of historic sites. Beautiful scenery - fields, hills- with amazing country walks. Breathtaking views of the River Dee. Loads to do for people of all ages- trail walking, canoeing, barge hire etc..
Lewes is packed with history and also has fabulous countryside, perfect for walkers and nature lovers. There are some good places to eat and drink too
Lewes has plenty to see and do particularly if you are a history or nature lover. You can walk onto the downs, there is a nature reserve and don't forget to pop into the Tourist Information office to get walk leaflets. There is also the castle and the priory
It is a good location, close to Heathrow and public transportation to get into the city of London. From the busses to the tube travelling to/from the city center was easy and smooth. It did take some time, but it was worth it when it came to flying day. Where we stayed allowed for walking to anything necessary (i.e. coffee shop, restaurant, grocery). It was a nice break from the hustle and bustle of the rest of our trip.
A small city, easily navigable and plenty of interesting sights, notably the cathedral. One or two excellent restaurants (try Skosh, but be sure to book ahead). Lively vibe thanks to the student community, although occasionally a little rowdy at night. Surprising number of homeless people.
A wonderful place ,with everything you would require, for a wonderful stay
Good communication, clean, nice and cosy barn and village location. We enjoyed our stay and would recommend to friends.
I was disappointed that there were no luggage lockers at the museum of Scotland, as the website said there were. The luggage storage in the station seemed rather expensive, so I didn’t use it. The castle was very interesting. I loved the green park near the station. There was a great range of restaurants. I was able to walk to plenty of attractions, as there is lots to do near the centre of town. Edinburgh has a nice feel, and most people are extremely friendly.
I liked the beach. The town was empty and some people bemoaned that everything closed at 5pm. There were bars open. On the way home I popped into a shop and the owner did not speak good about it as to whatever happened at the weekend. I went up to to Dedham via Colchester the next day.
Pretty town. Museum. Buildings. Shop racecourse local pub the plough in Ashley. Fab food there all was fabulous especially for the races
l liked the area, coastal walks and amenities, good selection of food outlets ,shops and restaurants where l and friends were there was a local supermarket about 2 minutes away.
Amazing sea views. Relaxed atmosphere. Good pubs.
Being an Expat for 20+ years it was great to be back in the UK. London is unique, the definition of everything British, and yet such a wonderful cultural and gastronomic mix. No where does it better. Something for everyone no matter age or background. See the sights, but more importantly walk and find the hidden treasures.
Free walking tour provided by the township of Bath. Meets at 10 am and 2 pm by the cathedral. Highly recommend!
I have to go their for the hospital so yes its got great shops ,shopping centre, different food places plus it does just eat app . Relaxing
For a quiet weekend away Deal has plenty to see and there are plenty of choices to have breakfast, lunch and dinner. I feel the charm of Deal is the fact it hasn't become to commercialised unlike some of Sussex's coastal towns. It was easy to walk to everything and not use the car.
Amazing people, some of the best food places in Newcastle
Inverness is centrally located. It's considered the gateway to the highlands, but is equally convenient for destinations south. It's a good sized city with a number of excellent restaurants and interesting pubs. Local folk were friendly
Everything is scattered about. People are generally friendly.
this was a lovely pub and hotel, a lovely room. comfy bed. I know Derby very well as I did live there in my late teens. this time we were up to see family.
lovely relaxing village old school handy for all visitor areas nice and relaxing country location
I experienced the shower rain, the breeze to the strong wind. It was fun. A lot of delicious restaurant in variety of food. People are really nice.
The city was beautiful and historical. We were able to walk or ride a bus to just about everywhere. The restaurant and food were great lots of choices. I can see why Harry Potter was based off Edinburg.
Don’t underestimate old southsea - gorgeous And walk along the sea front is amazing Gunwharf quays is great for shopping and socialising. Dress up for fun
A lovely place to visit if you like walking and hiking.
Children enjoyed body boarding at the beaches. Fort Inn excellent choice for families.
A lot of things to do and visit, but unfortunately limited due to COVID-19
Sadly a lot of this was closed due to lockdown. I enjoyed the Cathedral (both of them) the Necropolis and walking around the sights like Kenningrove Art gallery . I drove accross the city and the sheer scale and size of the Clyde is beathtaking.
Great hosts. Country pub in small, slightly remote village
Close to Lacock, to the Kenneth and Avon canal and not far from Bath.
The location was easy to get to each coast. Visiting Heligan, Hollywell, Perranporth, Porthtowan, Lelant, St Ives, Falmouth, Truro, St Mawes, Penryn, all easy to reach. Lovely place.
Great place to stay great accommodation, great food ,great staff. The Hotel is very much like a US motel all the rooms access from the outside great if you have dogs and it's just a short walk to a field next door again great for the dogs
lovely place to visit , plenty to do for young and old alike .activities all day and night if you wanted them and a lovely firework display once a week. beach was lovely and clean as was the sea front.
Interesting Victorian & Georgian village, far enough from motorways to be quiet but near enough for easy travel.
Stunning part of the country with plenty to see & do for a long weekend of exercise & eating.
We liked the space and cleanliness of the rooms. We liked the friendly staff and kindness. Having the swimming pool was an added bonus.
the scenery absolutely stunning brilliant for dog walking and very close to other places of interest like wensleydale creamery aysgarth falls its the perfect place to go if you have a dog the locals are very friendly and stop for a chat
Nice coastal college town with lots of history and museums. Very clean and safe.
The walk down to the beach was too steep, not a great area to walk around
Not much happening in the village, but that might suit some people
I went to KKS Steel Mill great night out for live metal music..Great venue..1
The high standard of all meals, breakfast and dinners were excellent and the menus had plenty of choice at the Wye Valley Hotel so we ate in every night
Beautiful little town , looked like something out of a Dicken’s book No vacant premises Excellent pubs and food , walk about lovely
Great town for a short break. Not a lot happening in the evenings if you’ve got children unless you want the arcades. Fabulous walk through to the beach now it’s been upgraded with cars not allowed.
Blackpool is a great place, lots to do and see. Great pubs and restaurants especially for fish and chips. The old fashioned trams have gone which is a shame and if you want to go to all the attractions it can be quite expensive, but the lights are, as usual, wonderful. It's nice to see the town thriving again after the pandemic. There is an enormous beach which would be great in the summer and three piers to enjoy. Highly recommended.
We arrived on the night of the coldest and windiest night of the year, had a quick walk around the shops of which there are plenty and booked in to a Greek restaurant for evening meal, wish we had a bit longer to look around but had made other arrangements for the Saturday.
Quiet at this time of year. Therefore just what we wanted. Great mountain walks and beach and promenade strolls with a fantastic restaurant, 'The Captain's Table'.
Perfect scale of town for walking round in a day.Beautiful historic buildings, great cafes and restaurants (the Ivy is a must ) and really friendly people .
Beautiful city, especially for a Game of Thrones fan like myself! The city is full of Game of Thrones themed attractions and of course, you can do a Game of Thrones tour from the city as well. Also the Titanic Belfast was amazing and a great visit!
An amazing city! Looks right out of a fairy tale! The Old Town requires at least a few days to really enjoy the Edinburgh culture! I stayed for two days but want to go back and spend more time! Edinburgh Castle, Royal Mile and the many attractions in the old town are awe inspiring. Looking forward to my next time!
Bideford and the site of the Royal Hotel are easily accessible and central for a diverse number of locations for every persons interests.
Classical Victorian spa town with wide avenues, lots of green open space & easy walking through town on historic plaque sites, including shopping , parks and RHS Harlow Carr.
Fantastic city I grew up in Exeter so much to do any see Seaside not far away People are fab Easy to get around
The people are very friendly and it's a great location.
Typical North Yorkshire market town, with shops and free (but £2 donation requested) parking, centred around a large market square. Nice selection of individual shops, cafes and pubs. Watch out for the splendid real ales from Wensleydale Brewery, and excellent cheeses from the creamery at Hawes. But really, visit more than anything to explore the surrounding countryside.
The bed was very comfortable. The rooms were very clean, Free Wi Fi and plenty of parking was good. The breakfasts were excellent. The evening meal food was good though be prepared to wait for it. A huge TV screen - too big for the room in fact for me. Great location with easy access to Kendal and surrounding beauty spots.
