Bruges is a picture perfect medieval city that will charm you with its distinctive, century-old houses, plentiful canals and city walls. The famous 13th-century Belfry offers the opportunity to watch the cobbled market place, the Grote Markt, below while 47 bells call out to the city every 15-minutes. While you’re in the Grote Markt you can take a ride in one of the horse-drawn carriages around the city.
Many interesting artifacts can be found in the churches of Bruges, a Michelangelo statue is housed in the Church of Our Lady and the Basilica of the Holy Blood contains a vial of blood reportedly from Jesus Christ. Other museums include the Groeninge Museum which includes works of art spanning 6 centuries.
Belgium cuisine is famous worldwide and the cafes of Bruges offer an inviting retreat from the cooler climate. Brewery De Halve Maan explains the process behind the beer which washes down the world-class fries, chocolate and mussels found all over the city.
Bruges is easily reached from the Brussel-Zuid train station or the Brussels Airport. From a romantic suite to an apartment for a group of friends, Booking.com will make sure your stay in Bruges is a memorable one.
We visited Bruge for the Christmas Markets. Bruge is a beautiful quaint historic city. Plenty to see and do. We wouldn’t necessarily go back for the Christmas markets as we thought they were quite small. However, the Christmas lights are beautiful. There are also plenty of Christmas shops all year round. We visited the Choco museum, the Historium. We had a boat trip on the canal and a ride on the horse and cart. We thought most things were fairly reasonably priced. The horse and cart was probably the dearest activity at €60 per cart. The restaurants around the market square can be expensive so best to walk a bit further afield to get a cheaper one.
Bruges is an ideal city for a short break, we've been coming for years. Not every year, there are other places to see too. But it is an excellent short stopover after a channel crossing. A couple of nights and a full day makes a perfect start, or end, to a European trip. It's a walker's city, it still has shops worth visiting and other sites. It has a huge variety of eating places for all tastes and budgets. Bruges is certainly more expensive than it once was. Walk around the town rather than the carriage ride, which is fun, but not cheap. I recommend good footwear, the cobbles are hard on the feet, but you can always stop for a coffee. Meals are comparable to eating out in England and more expensive than Germany.
It’s a beautiful city with loads to do and see. There are plenty of restaurants and eateries our favourite being Delaneys Irish pub. The food here was excellent and the staff very attentive. Can get very busy and uncomfortable but room for all.Horse and carriage rides although expensive were nice and informative.
I would recommend that everybody visits Bruges once in a lifetime. It is a beautiful place with an extremely interesting history - it is a sort of cross between Venice and Amsterdam, but a lot smaller and it is very easy to get to on the train from London (one change!) . We loved our visit but not sure whether we will return, we did a walking tour and a lot of sightseeing and felt that we saw most of Bruges in our two days. It is very easy to walk around. We ate at three restaurants , all very good and all very different from each other. The locals are extremely friendly and helpful, some of the nicest that I have ever met. The end of November was a great time to visit, the place is becoming very Christmassy, but it was extremely wet!
Wonderful old Town, Markt! Large Markt and pedestrian areas allow you to visit shops and beer pubs in comfort. Felt very safe walking alone at night. Great places to eat, drink, and visit. Numerous historical buildings to visit along with museums and canal rides.
Beautiful city, great churches museums and buildings. We took the canal ride and it's a great way to see the city and hear the history. Great to walk through at night with the lights shining on the canal. Food is wonderful, make sure you bring home lots of their chocolate.
