Salvador has this special magnetic energy to it. The city is perfect if you want sport, art or nightlife. I was surprised to see few foreigners apart from the odd tourist in pelourinho which means you get to experience a more authentic brazilian experience than the one you might get in Rio or Sao Paulo. The spirit of Bahia lives here, the mix of cultures and you get to experience all of it while discovering the most beautiful sceneries: sunsets over the lighthouse are not to be missed.
Salvador has an amazing historic center with beautiful architecture, cathedrals and colorful shops and restaurants. There are beaches nearby and the weather is pleasantly warm all year. Prices are low for food and accommodation. Brazilians are very friendly and helpful. On the downside, like in most developing countries, there is a huge gap between the rich and poor, which is visible.
Salvador is a great city to explore if you like history, architecture or dining out. The neighborhood of Pelourinho is a good place to start your exploration. There is where the city of Salvador began. You can take a quick tour which lasts about 2 hours and see most of the main attractions, like the Cathedral & Basilica of Salvador (Catedral do Santissimo Salvador), and a block away you can visit the Baroque Church & Convent of Sao Francisco. The boutique Hotel Villa Bahia sits between the 2 churches and is a lovely hotel. Nearby, you can find some excellent restaurants, such as Chez Bernard, Amado, Soho and others. If you want to combine some culture with a trip to the beach, visit the Fort of Sao Antonio da Barra (it's also a lighthouse, and there is a small museum to explore), and then you can enjoy sunbathing on the beach right next to the fort (Praia da Barra). Other neighborhoods worth visiting include Rio Vermelho, Pituba and Itapuã (there is another lovely lighthouse here and Restaurante Mistura is not to be missed). There are tons of things to see and do in this city, and Salvador is less expensive than Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro, so I recommend putting this on your “to do” list.
I went there with my partner end of August, and stayed at the Pelourinho. Unfortunately, this was very poor timing, as it's off season and therefore there are not many people on the streets - but there are a lot of homeless people in the area, which made us feel uncomfortable/unsafe. I love Salvador, but I'll never come back again during the off season period (only during high season!).
The city is beautiful even in the rainy season. I stayed for 8 days but I think 4-5 would have been enough. It poured on one day so I went to Shopping do Barra which is a mall. The best beaches are Flamengo and the one to the right of the Farol do Barra. Going to Pelourinho during the day is a must, and you can also go to the "sambas" in the evening to dance traditional Brazilian rhythms (make sure to go early between 6 to 7 pm, because they usually end between 10 pm and 12 am (depending on the day). There are not many clubs.
Salvador is a magical city, mixing beautiful beaches with historic culture and lots of music. It has the typical public safety problems in Brazil, but great support for tourists and a very hospitable population. It's really worth getting to know.
This little hotel in the heart of the historic center of Salvador brings excellent value. We very quickly became good friends with Michel, our host/owner, who went at extreme lengths to facilitate our stay. We achieved the delight of a vintage, typical and well decorated house conveniently located minutes away from all attractions in Salvador. In addition came Michel’s assistance with accommodation and all sorts of services which came consistently with a smile. We will no doubt be back on our next trip here. Highly recommended.
Very comfortable room. There is a large balcony in the room, and there is excellent options to have dinner in restaurants the front of the hotel. The beach is wonderfull, but not so easy to access by walking. The pool and area for leisure is very good as well. I recommend this hotel for those who need to stay in Salvador close to the airport and close to a big mall known as Shopping Center Norte Salvador.
Salvador
Usually do landmark hotels with family, but wanted to try something low budget and different for Salvador. This place was perfect with a human connection large hotels can't provide. The pool and breakfast although modestly sized were both delightful and full of character. We booked 7 nights and were sad to leave. And of course, what's not to love about free booze daily from 5:15 to 6:15pm?
This is the second time I stayed in this hotel and I'll most likely stay again when in Salvador. Having lived in Itapoan I'm familiar with the area and love the hotel location. It's across from a nice beach and has its own luxurious pool in addition to a top rated restaurant. Close to the airport and super friendly staff make this place a no brainer.
Was the best location for us, close to all touristic places, was not difficult or expensive to get an Uber to get to centre of town. I’m front of Barra beach which is the best of the city and surrounded by many good restaurants and bars. I would definitely stay here if I come back to salvador.
Barra, Salvador
The lady owner of the place, she’s an absolute delight she’s welcoming, helpful, joyful, it has been such a pleasure for me to stay there I can’t recommend it enough really it’s the best hotel in Salvador if your looking for authentic quite and front of the beach This is the place to be.
Good Bed, Excellent breakfast from 7am to 10 am, Friendly staff, I was on a pleasure and business trip as I had some work to do at the university of Bahia and the Hotel is conveniently located 5 minutes from the university. Also very close to the main attractions in the city.
Exceptional location and property. The hotel is like a museum. One of the most memorable stay in Brazil. The hotel staff were all very attentive and made my stay super special. Breakfast was such a highlight too. If you get the chance to stay here, do it!
Very comfortable and well kept hotel. Friendly staff and excellent grounds. One of the best hotels i stayed in Salvador. highly recommend if you can afford to stay a bit away from the city center.
