Chur is a beautiful and classic Swiss town It has a great shopping district with ample stores, restaurants and bars within easy walking distance. There are several churches and museums to enjoy and you are surrounded by mountains with as much to do as you want Money and whether to use the Euro or the Swiss Franc was pretty frustrating....
Had one full day there before we took the Bernia Express round trip. We did a self guide audio tour of the Old Town and took the cable car to the top of the mountain. We are not shoppers but history buffs. One full day we think is ample. Ate at two very good restaurants.
Amazing city - old town is very worth the trip alone. Unique history - wish the historical signs were in English We had a nice dinner at Jamie's Place ( very cool waitstaff) and Ambiente Hotel Freirick was great. The SBB people were helpful at the train station as well
In this oldest of all Swiss towns, we revelled in how perfectly everything old is kept. We were happy to walk and stay within the old quarters, but locals tend to live nearer the lovely Rhein river. It's the best town for historic Swiss train tourism, at the end of the Bernina Express with connections to other Rhatische Bahn routes and northeastern Italy. It's very bike or hike friendly for Rhein tourism. Take a train and hike from one to another stop. Despite being calculated by elderly hikers, add 50% to estimated hiking times! It was surprisingly hot in summer, not being a very high altitude. White water is available, too.
Old town Chur is a neat area. Lots of cafes open during the day (but very strict on hours they serve food!), transitions to a lot of bars/clubs in the evening. Surprising number of strip clubs and other seedy establishments in one section of Chur. Most places will not take Euro so make sure you grab some Swiss franc
“Fontana Passugg is a nice pension near Chur, directly in the woods. The way takes you trough a narrow bridge, but ok. Free parking. Nice view and very quite. There is a self check in. You find the keys in an envelope on the reception. Only in the morning you meet the couple which is in charge. They are very friendly”
“The restaurant was exceptionally good - we dined here two evenings -- Great service and great food. The hotel staff were friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. Breakfast was very, very nice. The location on the edge of old town is good.”
“Location in the centre of Chur was handy.”
“The bed was very comfortable and the staff was helpful. The location was in the medieval town and tithe hotel was only about a 10 minute walk from the station. There is also a bar and restaurant downstairs.”
“Nothing - the hotel is under renovation and is NOT ready for guests. Work is ongoing with drilling before 8 AM. The entrance is hidden in the back and there is debrief all over and the elevator is used to transport building materials - we should havebeen informed about this as we would not have stayed there. Breakfast is a joke!”
“Rooms have great lighting regardless of where you are in the room.”
“Everything was very good. It was very beautiful and the staff were extremely helpful and friendly. My bed was very comfortable, and the room was quiet and clean. The bathroom was small, but very nice.”
