FAQs about hotels in Aachen

Charming Emperor’s Residence

Political centre and favourite residence of Charlemagne, Aachen is located in Germany’s North Rhine-Westphalia region. A spa town since Ancient Roman times, it has some of the hottest springs in Europe. Its Old Town keeps important architectonic jewels, such as the Cathedral ordered by Charlemagne in 786, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

With a unique mix of styles, the Cathedral is the final resting place for Charlemagne’s remains, and served as coronation church for 30 German kings and 12 queens. Guest houses and hotels in Aachen’s historic centre are a romantic way of enjoying the city.

The RWTH University is one of the country’s ‘Universities of Excellence’, part of the technologic profile of a city that is regarded as one of the most innovative in Germany. In fact, a large number of Aachen hotels have congress facilities.

It is located 65 km from Cologne and 40 km from Maastricht/Aachen Airport. Connections to major European capitals are available from the central railway station, while several hotels nearby will help you to avoid the last-minute rush.

Whether you want to relax in the baths or come to town for a lecture, don’t miss the Aachen accommodation deals available on Booking.com!

I really liked Aachen.

I really liked Aachen. It is a compact and lively city that seems especially well suited for students. The historic architecture and old town are beautiful, although the historic centre itself is not very large, so you can explore much of it on foot. The location of Aachen is particularly interesting, right next to Belgium and the Netherlands, making it easy to visit three countries in a very short time. There are plenty of places to eat and drink, although I found the prices relatively high. Overall, Aachen has a nice combination of history, student life and an unusual location. It may not have an endless list of attractions, but it is a very pleasant city to walk around and spend a few days in.

It's a lovely old architecture German town.

It's a lovely old architecture German town. We were close enough to the centre to be able to have a stroll around the Chappel Street in particular, where there are many coffee shops and restaurants with terraces. The prices are not very high and acceptable for many. Next to the hotel, as you go towards the centre, there are some lovely eco gardens that you can visit and maybe donate something if you liked them to the people that are creating them and maintaining them. There are some parks around with playgrounds and many young people playing games. It was a lovely atmosphere and we are only sorry that we didn't stay one more day to see what Aachen has to offer from a cultural point of view.

We stayed three days in Aachen to see some competitions at the FEI World Equestrian Championship 2026. Between events, we had a half day off to visit the town, which was clearly not sufficient to see much of it. What we saw—the dome and the Museum Suemondt Ludwig and parts of the city center—was all nice enough to make us want to return for more. What we especially liked was the overall festive atmosphere during the sports event, which was visible everywhere in town.

We went to Cologne. It is world famous.

We went to Cologne. It is world famous. But it was disgustingly dirty around the cathedral and city centre. And it was absurdly expensive. Aachen was a little gem of a city. Safe, clean, truly beautiful in places and lots of regeneration going on. It was the best city we stayed in on our trip. It was pretty reasonably priced and Aachen cathedral, which is one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, was free. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to anyone.

We liked the Thermal Spa, the Catherdral and Charlemagne museum and the Lindt chocolate shop. The International Newspaper museum was extremely disappointing: unfriendly, several exhibits not functioning and overpriced. Drivers of non German cars need to have green compliance stickers on their vehicles to allow them to drive and park in many German cities, including Aachen.

Grim and dirty.

Grim and dirty. The streets still have chewing gum all over them. On the way to the hotel there was a poor, homeless man sitting on the pavement treating the dirty sores on his feet. On the way back to the car park we passed a woman who was either mad or on drugs, shouting and arguing with her reflection in a mirror and also a pile of human excrement. How could the authorities allow the centre of this city, a cathedral city with natural springs no less, sink to such a state?

Friendly staff at reception. Clean, spacious room with comfortable bed and pillows. Everything was very clean. Breakfast was very good with plenty of options. The hotel is close to the train station where we parked our car for 10 euros for an overnight stay. From the hotel, it's about a 15 minute walk into the old city centre where we enjoyed the fabulous Christmas market.

Fantastic hotel with parking garage and a short 15 minute walk from Aachen’s picturesque and historical city centre. Classic chic decor. The rooms and bathrooms are large, attractive, and comfortable, and the wellness centre is sublime after a long day of visiting the city. Superb breakfast! The staff are incredibly professional and kind. I hope to stay here again soon!
