Picture perfect Heidelberg is guarded by its famous castle halfway up a hill. If you don’t feel like walking, a funicular train goes there and continues to Königstuhl Mountain whose views are fit for the king it is named after. Dating to the 13th century, the ruined castle has peaceful landscaped grounds to wander, and the Heidelberg Tun, the world’s biggest wine barrel. And big it is!
At the foot of the hill is cobbled Hauptstrasse, supposedly Germany’s longest pedestrian shopping street selling traditional German beer mugs amongst other things. Also here are sidewalk cafes, the odd bierkeller and several Heidelberg hotels.
A short walk west is the Heiliggeistkirche (Church of the Holy Spirit), towering above the Baroque old town. Its square is the site of the Heidelberg Christmas markets, while to the north the beautiful Old Bridge crosses the Neckar River and ends at a twin-towered city gate.
Further west is Heidelberg University, the oldest in Germany and with a national reputation to rival Cambridge, its sister city. Over the river, Neckarwiese is a riverside park popular with students for a barbecue and beer, while by night the city’s many bars stay open until the early hours (and beyond!).
The nearest airports – Frankfurt and Stuttgart – both offer quick access by train to the Heidelberg accommodations on Booking.com

Heidelberg is very interesting particularly the Castle and the Old Town district. You can picture how the people lived at the time. There are a lot of multicultural restaurants to choose from.
Heidelberg like Frankfurt and Mannheim is a vibrant city but very safe to walk around even at night

As I actually lived near Heidelberg for many years, I know my ways around and I am always happy if I can visit it again. Being away though enables you to see the changes the city is going through from a different perspective. The beautiful oldtown will always stay the beautiful and lively oldtown and the castle will always throne above the city. For me, it hasn't lost it's charm.
What I can definitively recommend is to check out some places around the centre. HD-Bahnstadt is an aspiring part of the city with a lot of life! I remember it as a partly finished construction site, but to see what happened over the years, blew me away. Also, the former barracks are also transformed into quite fancy neighborhoods I must say.
One of my all time favorites is a visit in the botanical garden and palm house in the university campus (it's free!), a stroll through the oldtown early morning with a hot coffee and seeing the city waking up or a walk along the Neckar river on the northern side.

Lovely atmospheric old town with great market square with cafes and restaurants. Fantastic funicular railway which takes you up to the castle or even further for panoramic views.
The castle is more or less a ruin but quite big to mooch around, but very busy when we visited on a Saturday.
University Quarter has some great places to eat with good quality food.

This hotel is located in the old town of Heidelberg which is wonderful. You can park in public parking nearby, however could not find the area the hotel instructed us to go to, so we had to pay the EUR 19 per 24 hours parking. We had a room on the 4th floor and there is no elevator, so it might be difficult to reach with all your luggage. We had no "blackout" curtains and only a fan. When I booked the hotel I did not check on an elevator or air conditioning, so the surprise was my own fault. Breakfast was fine.
Very cosy and clean room in a little guest house that is opened in an ancient hotel building
Directly next to Heidelberg Castle on the hill, quiet above the old town parties.
Clean drinking water from a natural source for free.
Kiosque with snacks as well as a restaurant nearby, good food not too expensive.
Nice for a walk around part of the castle in the dark or in the morning with a breathtaking look on the town.
Very cosy beds in private rooms ( no dorms).
The staff was very friendly. The room was comfortable and the hotel is well placed, near some restaurants, a market and the old town is 20 min walking from the hotel. It is also close to the Heidelberg Haupbanhof. My daughter and I had a very amusing stay.
I did a booking with parking included but they don't have parking available, the nearest parking is not so easy to reach by car and is difficult to park around just to take your luggage to the hotel, is a hotel for backpackers not for people with car.
The location of the hotel was accessible to tram & bus, 10 minutes walk going to the heidelberg hbf.The staff in the reception
area are friendly. The room and facility was clean. We are happy and satisfied for our 2 days stay in the hotel.
