Rheinfelden has changed a lot in the last few years and is not a comfortable a country town as it once was. Otherwise, the shopping is very good for a small town, but there are too many "foreign" restaurants and not enough with "gut bürgerliche deutsche Küche"!.
An amazing village with fantastic restaurants in the town and in nearby villages. Very scenic and lovely. It is a short drive to many interesting sites, other towns and Switzerland. English is not widely spoken except by the youth. We particularly enjoyed the Roman ruins at Augusta Raurica museum. . A good central spot for touring but you will need a car.
We ordered food at their the service was abysmal, waiting 30 minutes for a drink, the food we gave to the dog as it was so under-cooked and chewy, even the dog left most of it. The staff were so rude that my mother was in tears and so we did not stay there after all. I have a generous attitude and so does my mother and neither of us have experienced such appalling behaviour. We didn't visit anywhere in the area as we had to find somewhere else to stay.
Only one place to eat and very few public transport links. So if you stay in hotel you have only really one place and that is the Elke restaurant which is OK but quite formal and maybe not to everyones taste.
The German side is of limited interest, but food prices are good. The more interesting Swiss side is a short and pleasant walk over the Rein. For I euros you can get a return ticket to Basel (10 minutes by express train) which includes unlimited tram rides in the centre of Basel.
German side is not an interesting city, no real attractions, limited entertainment possibilities, more residential and industrial area than a city. Swiss side (just opposite side of river Rhine) much more attractive, historical centre, spa, parks, restaurants (only Swiss prices are not so attractive :-)).
Great reception very attentive to our needs easy veg in and checkout
