Germany’s oldest city and a provincial capital of the Western Roman Empire until the 3rd century, Trier is overflowing with exquisite architecture and Roman ruins such as the Amphitheater and Porta Nigra gate. The colossal Cathedral Trier is also the oldest of its kind in Germany.
The historic landmarks continue with the 2nd-century Roman bridge that crosses over the Moselle River, which also passes through nearby Luxembourg and France. Cruises along the Moselle start in Koblenz and end in Trier.
Trier was the home of Karl Marx and the 15th-century University of Trier is home to a large student population that often refers to the university as Karl-Marx-University of Trier. His birthplace is now a museum, Karl Marx House.
A wonderful example of the Christmas markets in Germany can be found each year in Trier, at Hauptmarkt Square in front of the cathedral. Make sure you check Booking.com for special deals on hotels during this period.
A beautiful historic city with plenty of sights to occupy visitors. Easily walkable and plenty of cafes, bars and restaurants. One of the nicest places I’ve been to in Europe & I can’t understand why it is so off the tourist track really. I would love to return !
Wonderful historic city with grand buildings dating back to its Roman origin. Of particular interest are the Porta Negra Roman Gate, Basilica of Constantine, Cathedral and lovely market square. The city is also the birthplace of Karl Marx. You need a couple of days to explore it properly. Wide range of shops and restaurants.
Great to just walk around Trier and getting an idea of the history of the place from its settlement by the Romans. The architecture testifies of the layers of histories in the city. The Mosel valley is a great place to cycle in. Nice, easy bicycle paths following the river.
A beautiful historic city! Loads of Roman ruins in addition to many other periods of history. Plus the Mosel River. We ended our biking trip in Trier, although many begin it here. Just 45 minutes to Luxembourg City by car or train. A great location to continue in many directions.
Nice place, good roman sites, near luxembourg castles so good for sightseeing. I would recommend for other solo female travellers to stick to the tourist areas. Beyond the Marx museum (and around there) is a dodgy area to get lost in (I had to leg it at one point), so if you're not a walker, you're not fit and you're alone, it is best to take the little road train to the tourists points. Treve can be done in a day depending on when you arrive so use it as a base to see the surrounding areas - also gas up your car in luxembourg as it is cheaper to do so there.
Trier is one of the oldest cities in Germany, founded by the Romans over 2000 years ago, and it is exciting how it grew over time and adjusted to the circumstances. I would recommend staying at least two days in Trier, three would be better. We did not have time to do the Mosel cruise, which was a pity. We had lunches and dinners at various restaurants in the city. All were good. Some required reservations. I highly recommend one of the official city walking tours.
