I know Dax because my cousin lives there and so, it's not new to me. Dax is a town not dissimilar to Bath in the UK. People go to Dax for a 'cure' (called curists) - that is to mean that they spend up to 3 weeks using the thermal facilities to relieve their aches and pains. Being quite close to the Spanish border, you can expect an influence in the local cuisine. Dax hosts a number of annual festivities, with the Féria lasting one week, usually around the 15th August (a bank holiday in France). Dax is part of the Basque region, with local dishes, cakes, etc. as well as their white & red colours (complete with a red béret). Rugby is their favourite sport so expect a lot of rugby games on TV screens. Duck features heavily on menus, as well as black pudding and other parts of a bull you might not have the stomach for. But also squid and fish. There is a large market on Saturday mornings - heaven for foodies! You can visit the superb cathedral and also a crypt which takes you underneath the town via tunnels. Dax is about 60 mins drive from Hendaye, where you can park and catch a short ferry journey to the other side (and you then are in Spain). It also has great woods for great walks, a large river (a fleuve) and other smaller streams. It was 26 degrees when we got there (April). This time we didn't fly to Biarritz (40 mins drive away). We flew to Bordeaux, caught the airport shuttle bus to the train station (St Jean) - 30 mins and was 10 euros each - and then the train to Dax (1 hr 22 m). There is also a tram that goes from the airport to the train station but that's 45 mins. Easy peasy journey when we didn't want to drive this time around. I love Dax and we are going back next year for the féria!

Excellent location in peaceful wooded area for walking and not far from shopping convenience. The host was very helpful and friendly and the breakfast was good. There was free private parking on the site. The only negative was the lighting and cramped space in the bedroom, otherwise it had the advantage of a self-contained suite.

I only arrived in Dax at 11 PM on a Tuesday and was happy to find a bar open to grab a beer. Just staying for the night, but walked the old city the following day to get a glimpse. I could have stayed in this lovely little city for a day with its historical vibe. Lots of spa and wellness facilities, if you're into that.
