Smarden
The Checkers is a 14th-century coaching inn located in the picturesque Kent village of Smarden. Bedrooms feature exposed wooden beams and the candlelit restaurant serves fine British cuisine. The room was lovely. We stayed in the Guinevere room (luxury double room with brass bathtub) which is spacious and has a comfortable bed and large walk in shower. The food is wonderful - all the evening meals we had were delicious. Breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Great location for visiting National Trust properties (lots in the area), as well as Leeds Castle. The village of Smarden is also pretty and worth walking round.

The fact the room is independent of the main house gives a great deal of privacy and freedom to come and go as you please. The host even though dealing with a family crisis still made time to contact me and make sure everything was fine.

We loved the food. Plenty of it and we'll cooked. The Wi-Fi availability was limited to the main building and did not extend to the bedroom in the rear. The proprietor advised they were trying to fix this.
Smarden is a small, quiet but pretty village that doesn't have much to do other than chill out and relax. You need a car if you want to explore the area but we were visiting the Big Cat Sanctuary there, so we opted to travel down from Yorkshire by train to Headcorn Station which is about 5-10 minutes by taxi to Smarden. We stayed at the 14th century Chequers Inn in the village and we ate in their restaurant, the food was excellent. There is another pub that also does food, the Church, a Post Office/Village shop, Butcher, Art Gallery and a small Vintage shop. The village has lots of properties around the age of the Chequers that are worth having a wander around and seeing. We were perfectly located for the Big Cat Sanctuary, which we would highly recommend booking to visit (it isn't open to the general public), which was about 5 minutes drive from our accommodation. We loved our visit to this lovely little village and it would make a good base for exploring the area.
Lovely Kentish village with beautiful old buildings, lovely church, post office and great butchers shop. I ate at the Chequers Inn, however there were other pubs in the area that served food. There are footpaths and the beautiful Sissinghurst Castle Gardens are only a 15 minute drive from the village. Thoroughly recommend a stay in Smarden. Although I was travelling alone, at no time did I feel lonely, as the staff were always on hand.
We loved the open fields, with, at this time of the year, mist with sunlight peeping through. We managed to take some atmospheric photos. We went to Headcorn, which is an experience in itself, for provisions and lunch. There is plenty of countryside walking. Smarden is a very old village, and the buildings are great. We enjoyed lunch at the George and Dragon in Headcorn, where dogs are welcome inside, which is a bonus.
Smarden
We loved everything especially the copper bath. Checking in was easy and staff were friendly and welcoming. We were visiting local family and have previously used another hotel close by to here but this is going to be our new place to stay now! 💓
