Hermes Delphi Hotel, Acropole Delphi City Hotel and Hotel Varonos have received great reviews from travellers in Delfoi regarding the views from their hotel rooms.
A small mountain town famous for the increible ruins of the Temple of Apollo, where the Oracle sat and channelled Apollo (and Dionysus when Apollo was on vacation) for some vague unhelpful prophecies. We stayed in mid-September where the weather was great and there weren't many people. The town is nice and cozy with good places to eat, and the view of the mountains and the Gulf of Corinth is beautiful. Very recommend for people who like stairs.
If you like the archeological sites and their history, then you will love this place. The museum is a must although try to avoid visiting the sites on a very hot day. If you own a car, you must also visit Arahova and a few mountain villages nearby (Agoriani).
We had an excellent private guide through the ruins which made the stones come alive. We went late in the day when the sun was not bright and there were few people. After the guide left, we sat and soaked in the atmosphere and views until 8 pm. The next day we went to the museum. Museum is very interesting, modern. We especially enjoyed the model of the Delphi sanctuary and the bronze charioteer at the end. Greek, French, and English throughout.
The archaeological site of Delphi, located in Greece, is indeed a significant historical site with great cultural and religious importance. The site was dedicated to the god Apollo and was renowned throughout the ancient Greek world for its Oracle, known as Pythia, who would deliver prophecies and advice to those who sought guidance. The main attraction within the site is the temple of Apollo, where Pythia would give her oracles. This temple was a focal point of worship and pilgrimage, and it housed many treasures and offerings from various Greek cities. These treasuries were lavish structures built to showcase the wealth and power of their respective cities. Aside from the temple, the site also features an ancient theater where dramatic and musical performances known as the Pythian Games took place. This theater provided a venue for artistic and cultural expression during ancient times. Additionally, there is a stadium within the site that hosted athletic contests, reflecting the importance of physical prowess and competition in ancient Greek society. Adjacent to the Apollonian sanctuary, you'll find the Gymnasium, which served as an educational and athletic center. It was a place where young men would receive instruction and training in various disciplines, including sports, music, and philosophy. Other notable features of the Delphi site include the sacred fountain of Castalia, which held mythological significance and was considered a source of inspiration for poets and artists, and the Sanctuary of Athena Pronaia. The latter is known for its distinctive Tholos, a circular building with a conical roof that is an iconic symbol of Delphi. Due to its historical and cultural significance, the Delphi archaeological site has been recognized by UNESCO and included on the World Heritage List, highlighting its universal value and the need for its preservation and protection for future generations.
The Temple of Apollo is astounding. The dramatic setting, the history, and the extent and beauty of the ruins make it a place unlike any other. I have been here three times now, and I hope to visit many more times in the future. Each time I've been I am blown away, and see things I hadn't seen before. The town is touristy but also authentic. It's a great place to stay for a couple of nights to take in the ambience of the area and get to sites and eat great food and wander.
People normally go to Delphi because of the amazing history there! And the historical locations do not disappoint! I would say a whole day is perfect to see them all, and it is recommended to start when the sites open - at 8. This is when the place is most deserted, and one can truly experience its mythical/mystical beauty. Afterwards, tourist buses start arriving by the dozens, and the atmosphere of the whole place is ruined by the crowds. The village itself is small and quiet. There are quite a few taverns with terraces looking out towards the amazing views. I would recommend staying there as opposed to the more popular and contemporary, but also very crowded Arachova nearby. I feel the local economy could benefit it too.
