Cavan was our least favorite place we visited in Ireland.

Cavan was our least favorite place we visited in Ireland. We decided to go here because we needed a place to stay on our way from Sligo to Drogheda, but then were a bit disappointed by the city in general. We definitely felt more of a British influence in the overall vibe and layout of the city, surely very different to the other places we visited this time. It's unfortunate because I believe most people living there are Catholic Irish, yet it felt like the city was missing that beautiful Irish soul and character. We also found it difficult to find restaurants that served local food instead of Asian (which I normally love, but it's not my preference if I'm traveling around Ireland) There doesn't seem too much to see in Cavan (city). I would say it's still a good place to stay for a night in-between other locations. The city itself is easy to reach by car and cozy to walk around. Bring cash as some pubs won't accept cards.

Staff and The Bailie Hotel was more than I expected with a warm friendly atmosphere. Very happy with my sleep, bedroom & facilities. We had breakfast included which was very ample and staff were very hospitable. Minor issue was perhaps a couple of hooks near the shower recess would be an advantage in getting to your towel when getting out of the shower but otherwise a lovely place to stay. The hotel should b very proud in what they r trying to achieve.

Our main attraction to Cavan was that we have family roots there. The local Library/ Geneology Section was very helpful in locating a birth entry for my grandmother who was born in Cavan in 1879! The people were friendly and helpful and Cavan is unspoilt by tourism. Cavan is green and beautiful .

Cavan is an excellent town with good hotels, cafes and restaurants. These even include a boutique Ukrainian cafe. The streets are busy and you need to allow time to park. There is a good selection of shops and a major retail park on the edge of Cavan Town. There is an excellent library and a good arts scene with many craft groups around Cavan Town. Cultural events include those arranged by the local Ukrainian community and there is also a Ukrainian community/culture centre also.

Cavan Town has a lot of historical buildings and is also associated with historical figures including Percy French, the musician, artists and performers. The Town is worth visiting and there is an excellent road system and an excellent bus service also. The Town has great potential and maybe this is not being fulfilled. There is a multicultural community and you will be able to 'experience' many different cultures and attend different cultural events etc. You need also to be aware of the cultural sensitivities around you as those coming from different ethnic backgrounds may have different approaches as to how things are done and also different expectations as well. You need to be aware that similar to Northern Ireland, you are in a 'divided' community. There is a strong cross border influence as the Town of Enniskillen is a short distance from Cavan Town. You must also remember that you are in the Republic of Ireland and not Northern Ireland. Border communities are still 'growing' communities and 'the past' is still a sensitive subject including the 1920ies. Enjoy yourself and respect everyone and you will have an excellent time in Cavan Town.

Aisling was a super host, very helpful and always at the end of the phone. Cottage and Hideaway were very warm and cosy. We really appreciated the stove after long days in the cold and rain. On top of this we had our horses stabled on site. I was also very thankful that I could have my mascot collie Milo with me. Super location - within 20 mins of Cavan Equestrian Centre , Cavan town centre and local shops. Thank you Aisling. We would definitely book again.

I booked the Cavan crystal hotel for a hen night in September. I have to say this was the nicest hotel stay I have ever had. The friendliest and most helpful team they really made our stay there exceptional. They even had the hens name on the dinner menu. Thanks so much for a fabulous stay Irene & team. Looking forward to coming back.
