Sardinia’s Catalan Gem

The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.

The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.

South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.

Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

Alghero, in May, has a lovely relaxed atmosphere. We were very disappointed that there were no local operators offering bus tours to historical or scenic locations. We could not figure out how to use the busses to get to historical or scenic locations. A two minute Uber ride cost 20 euro. We had to hire a car to get to see historical and scenic locations. The tourist office needs a simpler way of explaining public transport options. We got a boat to Neptunes cave. Go by the steps and cliff walk instead of by boat. The green cave is spectacular. Do both caves the same day. They are right next to each other. Why is there a stinky pile of seaweed on the northern beach Spiaggia Lido di San Giovanni ? Why is the speed limit 50kph on a long straight road with no residences off it ? Great food at good prices if you go 'inland' from the seafront. For example 'Trigu'

It is not necessary to rent a car.

It is not necessary to rent a car. Instead, you can use city and intercity buses, which are affordable and take you to all the tourist spots and attractions, as well as the airport. Don't miss the trips to Neptune's Cave and the town of Bosa

The property that I stayed at was in teh middle of a no drive zone without a permit and the property owner did not notify me of this ahead of time and refused to add me to a white list to allow me to drive in this zone.

A lovely seaside town on the west coast of Sardinia.

A lovely seaside town on the west coast of Sardinia. I visited in April, well before the touristic season begins, and absolutely loved the place. You can see they are slightly poorer than the continental Italy, but, on the other hand, the place has a seaside charm which I always love. I loved the Maria Pia beach as it has natural shade, with a forest on a hill separating the beach from the town. Rented a bicycle to visit Fertilia, a nearby town. For a longer stay, I'd probably set out on the adventure of visiting Bosa, 35 km away, by bicycle too (not an electric bicycle! I ride a regular bicycle at home too, so 60-70 km per day would be a good training). Would definitely return.

Alghero is an absolute gem of a town that perfectly combines rich history, stunning coastal views, and a relaxed Mediterranean vibe. Walking through the narrow, cobbled streets of the historic center with its old sea walls felt incredibly atmospheric, and the unique Catalan influence gives the town a wonderful, distinct character. The nearby Maria Pia beach with its beautiful pine grove is spectacular, offering pristine sands and crystal-clear water just a short distance from the town. Combined with incredible local seafood, warm hospitality, and unforgettable sunsets over Capo Caccia, Alghero is a destination I would love to return to.

This is a stunning boutique hotel/ B&B in a secluded spot about 15 mins drive south of Alghero. On the property are fig, olive, Lemon , orange and almond tress, along with vines and herbs. All of these are used as ingredients by Sandra to make guests the most delicious and fresh breakfast. The farm house has been recently renovated to create three beautiful guest bedrooms. They are all different and built to the highest spec with so much attention to detail. We will definitely be back!

It was absolutely lovely stay near Alghero on the west coast of Sardinia. Daniela as a host was very nice and kind. We had breakfast every morning with fresh coffee. The room was spacious, well equipped, clean, a little terrace gave us an opportunity to sit out in the evening. We are very thankful. Hopefully will come back soon :)
