Sardinia’s Catalan Gem
The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

Amazing city.
Amazing city. Everything is within walking distance, including food, shopping, and the port. Bosa was a short drive about 1.5 hours away, and Cagliari about 3 hours. We loved our time in Alghero.
We loved our time in Alghero. Felt two weeks was too long in one place and next time we will book two different centres. We ate twice in Enhorabona which happened to be under our apartment It was by far the best place we ate. We walked into the old town many times as it is lovely. I would avoid going to the popular beaches as too busy. Beach in front of our apartment was perfect.Peters - Scored 1010

An absolutely stunning walled old town, full of lovely buildings, shops, bars and restaurants. There are lots of boat trips available from the marina (especially to Neptune's Caves). The old town is a short walk from stunning beaches. We found it a perfect destination for a short break with a great balance of beach-time, boat trips and gentle wandering around the old town rather than full on sightseeing. Lots of buses if you wanted to venture further afield, but we were happy to stay in the town for our four night holiday. And finally, the sunsets were to die for.

The house was perfect for 4 people, 2 bedrooms, everything clean, have everything that you would usually use in your home. Location is 10-15 min walking from the centre, but it was fine by us. The garbage you need to take out every day, sometimes they don’t pick up and you need to find big garbage cans, it’s little annoying. Very nice place, hope to come again 😍Fabijan - Scored 4.04.0

I would not return to Alghero. there is a lack of dining and bar options. just pizzerias everywhere. no ethnic options anywhere. beach has rocks under water so injuries are possible. rubbish bus service, bus stops have very little or no info on routes or timetables and buses only accept prepaid tickets. train station is unmaintained (think soviet era) Alghero has weeds growing everywhere, not like Costa Smeralda which is immaculate. Alghero is a niche location that my wife enjoyed but it does not have something for everybody.AlanIreland
