The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.
The Alghero accommodation on Booking.com includes 5-star hotels with pools, cheap B&Bs and apartments with parking.

I first visited Alghero back in 2001 and have not ceased to think about it since. This time I came with my little son and my teenage nephew. For little kids, the beaches are just awesome, because they are very gradual, in Maria Pia beach, you have the wonderful pine groves etc. At the same time the city itself is very beautiful, picturesque and romantic. It offers very numerous possibilities of trips - not only to the famous Grotta di Nettuno, but we also visited, by ARST buses from Via Catalogna - the city of Bosa, Castelsardo, Sassari, we went to Stintino and the La Pelosa beach, Porto Torres, and would certainly found other places had we stayed longer.

Alghero's old town with its cobbled streets feels like...
Alghero's old town with its cobbled streets feels like stepping into another era yet it has a modern vibrancy with shopkeepers warm and welcoming that made me feel instantly at home. Everything is within walking distance with access to the promenade and nearby beaches. Yet for all its age, Alghero felt fresh, clean, and safe. The buildings are well-preserved, and the overall atmosphere was one of calm and security. Even in the quiet evening hours, the town had a sense of peacefulness, where you could explore at your leisure without a second thought. The better restaurants are to be found only a few streets from the old town centre. Public transport to and from the airport is both frequent and reasonably priced.

Absolutely beautiful place with lots of things to see and do. The restaurants and boat trips are great. The Cathedral is beautiful. The beaches are stunning There is a little train that you can take around the old town to get a better understanding of the area. It costs 6euro. The market stalls are lovely in the evening and there are always live singers and musicians in the streets at night

Alghero is beautiful. Especially the old town.
Alghero is beautiful. Especially the old town. Easy to walk around with beautiful shops, bars and churches. Cobbled streets so wear comfortable shoes! Avoid Bar dei Giardini cafe like the plague as the rudest customer service I have ever received! This is in Giardini Giuseppe Manno. We made the mistake of trying to order a sandwich there before getting on the bus to Olbia. Honestly the rudest staff I have ever encountered! Difficult to get a taxi after midnight. Book from the establishment you are leaving from, as not available off the streets. Strolling along Alghero seafront is the perfect end to an evening , ending up in Old Town for dinner. Beautiful.

We visited the old part of town.
We visited the old part of town. The ground of the narrow streets is not smooth (stoney), we walked in comfortable shoes. It is also possible to buy. There are gift shops, clothing and shoe stores.
The restaurant where we had lunch, however, was not a good choice. The pasta was tasteless, the tomato clam soup smelled awful. This restaurant was located on a corner with 2 side entrances and street tables. We went here without a recommendation, we just sat down. It was a mistake.

Really busy thriving town with plenty of restaurants and shops to visit. Very safe and friendly with a real family feeling to it. Don’t get lost, or do because the streets and lanes are a real labyrinth, particularly at night time.
Wonderful, welcoming staff. Great location and very walkable to the historic centre. Our room was spacious, the delicious breakfast was very ample and we could not have asked for more.
We are looking forward to going back to charming Alghero soon, and really hoping to be able to stay at Hotel Domomea again.
Very nice, functional house just a few steps from the old town of Alghero. But the very best thing about the accommodation was our host - Fabio is the perfect mix of Sardinian friendliness and Tuscan charm!
We felt very comfortable and look forward to seeing you again ;)
Very cute Sardinian room, brand new and tasteful. I must say that in Alghero it’s hard to find this kind of quality accommodation.
It’s so nice that they’re is a common kitchen zone with available tea/ coffee, dishes and cutlery with a micro wave!
The room was in front of the sea with an amazing view over the lido and Alghero town. Also the hotel is in a perfect location, nearby the station and with walking distance from bar and attractions
