Sardinia’s Catalan Gem

The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.

The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.

South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.

Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

We absolutely loved Alghero!

We absolutely loved Alghero! A charming old town, beautiful sea views, lovely food, and a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to slow down and enjoy every moment. There is plenty to see and do, both in the city and nearby, but it is also a perfect place for simply wandering around and enjoying the surroundings. Highly recommended!

Wonderful place, lots of great places to eat at, lovely beaches, and activities to do. The old town is beautiful and lovely at night. Shopping options are varied, and you can get great souvenirs. The bus service is good but irregular, often overcrowded, and the timetables are inaccurate.

Alghero matches all the hype in the guidebooks and social...

Alghero matches all the hype in the guidebooks and social media. It is the coolest city that we visited on our trip to North Sardinia. The ramparts are magical at twilight, for strolling with lots of bars and restaurants to drink and eat as you view the sunset over Capo Caccia, and watch / listen to wandering minstrels and buskers. There was even a fire-eater act! We had excellent Catalan-style paella and sangria. We stayed in Hotel Florida which gave us the best of old and new. It was only a 20-minute walk to the Old Alghero with its medieval alleys and seaside ramparts; but Hotel Florida (see my review) had easy access and parking for our rental car. It also had modern room with good AC and an awesome pool. Alghero is also a good base to explore Capo Caccia, Neptune's Grotto, and Bosa. And not that far from Stintino / La Pelosa Beach or Sassari or Castelsardo. Wish we had stayed longer, about 3 days / nights would have been better.

Alghero is a beautiful place. Lovely relaxed vibe. It's compact so is ideally suited to a short break but we found 7 days there to be fine. Plenty of choice of restaurants/cafes/bars. Old Town is beautiful and atmospheric. Very short transfer from airport.

Nice little town to spend 4-5 days.

Nice little town to spend 4-5 days. Everything is in the walking distance, even the most remoted and the most beautiful beach (Maria Pia - white sands, shadow under the pines) - 30 minutes. Neptune's Grotto is a bit overrated but the boat trip to Grotto is fun. We visited in late September and there was no crowd, neither on the beach or in the town and it was yet great weather for strolling around cities and for swimming at the beach. A lot of great pizzerias with fair prices (5-10 EUR/ pizza).

It is easy to get around Alghero, beautiful old town with small cafes, shops and tavernas. A large long historic fortification wall, on upper perimeter by beach, with watch towers and fortified gates, really something nice to visit.

First of all we never met an owner so nice and generous as JC. He came to the airport and lead the way to his guesthouse. On the way we stopped for a drink at his bar. He made spaghetti for us and got shopping for us as we were landing late. The house and the are was very quiet and peaceful. Swimming pool huge for our family of six. Everything was perfect. House very good equipped. Everything we needed was here and more. I would highly recommend stay at Casa Tara. If we ever come back to Sardinia it will be definitely come back to JC.
