Sardinia’s Catalan Gem
The walled town of Alghero on Sardinia’s west coast has an altogether more down-to-earth vibe than the more exclusive Emerald Coast on the opposite side of the island. In fact, it feels more Catalan than Italian.
The seafront walls and defensive towers surrounding the historic centre were actually built by the Catalans in the 16th century, and many residents still speak a dialect from that era. However, Sardinia has been inhabited since prehistoric times, and the Nuraghe di Palmavera stone dwellings outside the town are evidence of this. Another nuraghic site is Anghelu Ruju, near Alghero Fertilia Airport.
South of the airport is sandy Maria Pia Beach which continues all the way to Alghero harbour and is lined with beachfront hotels, bars and restaurants offering tasty seafood, including local lobster. Boat trips leave the harbour to Neptune’s Grotto along the coast. Next door is Nereo Cave, supposedly the largest Mediterranean sea cave and a popular diving spot.
Also worth visiting are the pedestrian streets of the old town, packed with shops and pavement cafés. Also here are 16th-century Palazzo d’Albis and the cathedral with its mixed architectural styles.

Alghero has a very charming historic old town and a lovely, relaxed Mediterranean vibe. There are plenty of excellent and surprisingly affordable restaurants, both in the old town and along the Lungomare and the Bastioni Marco Polo promenade, many with beautiful sea views. It is a wonderful place for an evening or night stroll, when the old town and seafront really come alive.
It was quite humid during our stay in mid August, but there was usually enough of a sea breeze to make it comfortable. Overall, Alghero felt lively without being overwhelming, with a great combination of history, good food, beaches and beautiful seaside walks.

Alghero it's our top destination, plenty of beautiful, easily reachable* beaches (we love Maria Pia beach) *frequent bus. Then, after 6:00, get ready for the lovely evening: promenade along the sea port, sunset on the fortress walls, dinner in outdoor restaurants, walks throughout the old city to enjoy fairy lights, small shops, ice cream and entertainment..can't describe the feeling, must visit.

I spent six year in Alghero on and off in the 1980's and was...
I spent six year in Alghero on and off in the 1980's and was here last year, back again next year. Alghero has changed a lot with major renovation works to the old town. There are more tourists now, so can be very busy in the summer months. It remains a nice town, with a lot of history. This can take time to wade through, one visit won't do it. There are some remnants of WW2, pillbox at the port and one dug into the cliff past Las Tronas, there are pillboxes out in the country side. The beach starts at St Giovanni, I would give this a miss, the seaweed collects here and lets of the usual egg smell. The beach area gets progressively better and more crowded past the Lido. I went over to Maria Pia where the pine trees are and booked an umbrella & two sunbeds, €15 for half day, get there on time to get a subbed, around 08:00 in the morning and 14:00 in the afternoon. Grab and to go slice of pizza at Al Gambero is good for a quick bite. Restraints Alguer Mia and Dietro il Carecere are good places to eat, these are away from the town centre and where my relatives eat, these are fussy people. Are Italians rude? No, they are to the point. In restaurants they are accommodating and helpful, shops and bars if you're obviously a tourist they will accommodate, on the bus its pot luck. Make a trip to the market on a Wednesday just to buy cheese and salame, it's in the Lido area. When there check out the veg on sale. Sardegna gets hot, this year was around 36c, 96.8f for the Americans, every day. The scenery is amazing, You can see the detail of Capo Caccia in the early morning, as the day draws on the definition fades with the sun set which is great to see from the muraglia in the old town.

Alghero was the perfect location to relax after a week in Rome. There are several beaches close at hand. We had an excellent mini-yacht tour of the bay and enjoyed taking the ferry to the caves. There are a number of good restaurants along the waterfront boardwalk and Old Town is fun with tons of shops and restaurants.

A really comfortable beautiful country boutique hotel where you can fully relax, while enjoying the local food and the beautiful surroundings. Close to Alghero, a beautiful lively little town where you can eat and shop until late. The hotel staff is very friendly and helps you with all your questions on what to do in the neighborhood. Also staying in the hotel is a must, enjoy the swimming pool, tennis court and the great food home-made m.

Nice and cozy apartment in the heart of old town Alghero, very easy to reach at the sea. Very clean and nice decorated, in an old building, made us feel the Sardinian vibes. Kitchen is very well equipped with everything you need. Very good wi-fi. The host was very nice and ready to help us with everything, he had been waited us for a late check-in due an issue at our flight. Also, we had been welcomed with a bottle of wine and cold water.

The location of the hotel is really nice with nearby beaches easily accessible, from right below to the hotel or around 5 min driving to Lazaretto beach. Or if you fancy some walking, get to the beach through a trail accessible from the hotel. Definitely need a car or other means to reach the Alghero center, about 15 minutes drive. The hotel is quiet and generally good. Very nice views as well. Ample space to park.
