I traveled to Ancona with a friend because there was a direct catamaran line. For trip like this, be prepared for possible seasickness. The port in Ancona is extremely large/long and the check-in is dislocated from the terminals, so be sure to come in time. There is a free shuttle bus from the check-in point to terminals, and you can leave your baggage near the terminals (Deposito Bagagli Porto di Ancona). Public transport in Ancona generally functions pretty well, you can buy tickets on the machines in the buses or via app called MooneyGo.
Ancona itself is pretty, but certainly not the most beautiful Italian city I have visited. Given that it is a port, the coastline is not particularly attractive. The beaches are sandy and quite crowded. However, the old town is lovely for a walk, and prices are decent everywhere. There are some smaller towns nearby that you can reach by train relatively quickly (Loreto, Jesi, Osimo, etc.). I'd definitely recommend Urbino, but be prepared to set aside at least two hours for the one-way journey.

It was easy to get in to central Ancona by bus from our hotel & the train station was close
We enjoyed the Old Town area particularly & the view looking down over the harbour area
We did attempt to visit the Marina Dorica by public transport but as I speak minimal Italian we never made it

I was pleasantly surprised with Ancona.
I was pleasantly surprised with Ancona. It's not very big but everywhere you fo, you can find something beautifiul to see. You want calm walk in nature? Big park and a whole nature reserve with many paths for you. Want to see all the nice buildings? No problem, every other street has some. Want to sit by the seaside? You can go sit on many benches around the port or go to the beach. Honestly, great place to relax.

Probably often overlooked because it’s a major port city, Ancona is really worth a visit. The pleasant city centre is reasonably compact and not overcrowded. We liked the historic centre, with the duomo on top of the hill (lift available), a palace and museums, the Roman arch etc. Great views from Belvedere point over the harbour and 14th century quarantine hospital. There are also some nice beaches, but being mid-November we gave them a miss.

Ancona is not just another coastal town – for me, it’s a truly special place that resonates deeply with my sensibility. It has this calm, authentic atmosphere of the Italian seaside, without the overwhelming crowds, yet full of charm, soul, and subtle beauty.
The city lives in contrast – sea and hills, history and everyday life, serenity and elegance. Whether you're walking along the waterfront, sipping espresso in a quiet piazza, or getting lost in the narrow streets of the old town, you feel like you belong.
What touched me the most was the sense of peace and connection. Ancona doesn’t ask you to adapt to it – it quietly adapts to you.
I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a city that will win them over not with noise or flash, but with depth, warmth, and quiet grace.

Many of the main attractions were closed.
Many of the main attractions were closed. Some because of an earthquake a few years ago but others with no explanation. Poor identification of sights made them difficult to find especially when they were closed when we got there. The evening atmosphere was lively - lots of young people enjoying themselves. The food was typical of a tourist town although reviews online helped identify the better restaurants.

Such a beautiful apartment in a great location in the beautiful old town.
Great facilities - provided everything you could wish for in an apartment.
The owner was wonderful, so accommodating and a great host - sharing her local knowledge and favourite beach spots with us.
Welcome pack / breakfast pack was great as too was having a washing machine.
It made for a brilliant stay in Ancona,

Check-in staff welcoming and efficient. Valet car parking provided. Room was comfortable, a decent size (especially for Italy). Plenty of storage, and a fridge with water and soft drink provided. Cleaning very good with change of bathroom linen, which was also of a high standard. We liked the lo cation - at the port but easy walking to anywhere in the city.

Amazing and very helpful and friendly staff who go that extra mile for you. Superb location. All in all a wonderful family run hotel run to International best practice standards. Everyone there is extremely invested in making your stay happy. Extremely clean and well looked after. We hope to return certainly.

The apartment is in an excellent location in the heart of the historic center of Ancona. Caterina is unbelievably helpful - she drove me to Portonovo, the most beautiful place on the Conero coast (the Mezzavalle beach was one of the nicest I have seen in my life). thanks again!
