The main drag alongside the highway holds the ceramics stores but don’t neglect the old town which developed in the 15Century. Deruta became the ceramics capital because it has the best clay deposits. The stores are honest - in that the entire family works on each piece throwing baking painting with original designs
Deruta is a long established ceramics centre. The designs are very traditional and won't suit those with minimalist tastes. If you like bright colours and cockerels, flowers etc. onbyour breakfast plate, you may love them. the town itself is small and attractive but lacking in activities. That said it makes s good base to explore Umbria and the south of Tuscany. We went to Perugia, Gubbio and Montepulciano, and Assisi is close too.
Great place if you're into ceramics, both traditional and modern. The top town was quaint and the bar with the gelato fridge at the door was wonderful, great food and the owners were teriffic hosts.. The middle town has a large range of outlets and interesting to watch the talented artists at work painting the ceramic work..
We chose Deruta as our location in order to take part in the World Championship Sporting Clays competition near Collepeppe. Deruta proved to be an excellent central location to visit regional destinations like Assisi, Perugia and Orvieto, as well as smaller local destinations like old Deruta with its majolica ceramics, Collazzone and Todi. Assisi is just amazing for its extent, complexity and history, while Orvieto Cathedral just takes your breath away! We stayed at Antica Fattoria del Colle, a restored farmhouse on a hill top among olive groves with its own restaurant, so we ate on-site several times. We found a great restaurant at the shopping centre at the Collepeppe roundabout, and also had a great dinner in Todi. The National Geographic Traveler for Italy recommended a day's drive to visit several hill towns between Spoleto and Assisi -- we took two days but only covered Assisi, Spello, Spoleto and Montefalco.
Very nice facility , extremely well maintened. Big and clean apartments , traditionaly decorated . The outdoor space is absolutely amazing with the pool area , the sports field where the kids can play football , volleyball or just run. There is a supermarket 2 minutes by car and the beautiful city of Deruta ( with the big trandition on ceramics ) is just a 5 minutes ride.
Attilio, our host was really great in whatever help we needed. Serving breakfast, booking restaurant and most importantly to get us familiarized with his art as well as that of Deruta's….Place 5 mins walk from piazza...parking on site.
Nice hotel with comfortable rooms run by a lovely family. The restaurant is the highlight and the reason we booked. Great food with a really interesting menu and very reasonably priced.
