BulgariaThis was our second stay at Basiliani hotel for the last 6 months. We absolutely love the location, the rooms, and the spectacular views from the room. The breakfast is great - high quality local products, fresh, and nicely presented. The staff is very nice and attentive. We parked our car on a parking slot, outside the Sassi area and used the hotel shuttle service, which is very fast and convenient way to get to the hotel. Already looking forward for our next stay there.

BulgariaA beautiful boutique hotel in the heart of Sassi. If you are looking for an authentic "grota" experience, this is it. The room had a very high ceiling and was very cosy. The staff was very helpful, the lobby is also very nice. In front of the hotel there is an amazing view of the old town. Would definitely recommend and stay here again.

I love Matera, especially since I have many cousins who...
I love Matera, especially since I have many cousins who still live there and other cousins who live in Gravina in Puglia (very near to Matera). The city is vibrant with plenty of history to explore and provides diverse activities; such as, dining, shopping, exploring, and hiking. There are so many things to experience in Matera and you are close to other nearby towns with access to public transportation. I would recommend renting a car if you plan on exploring the outskirts of Matera and beyond; you won't need one if you stay and explore Sassi, the old/historical areas of Matera. Parking is restricted within Sassi, so you will be good to go on foot.

Matera is stunning and so interesting.
Matera is stunning and so interesting. We stayed 2 nights, and would have enjoyed one more night. We did a guided waliking tour and lots of our own walking around. The restaurants are amazing. La Lopa was a stand out for us, but everywhere we ate was wonderful. We parked in the parking garage just outside the ZTL zone and our car was secure and parking was very affordable at 10 Euro per day. We love history, food and wine, so this city was perfect for us.

Amazing how the historic area is almost hidden, and you walks down some steps and suddenly there it all is. Excellent day spent roaming the area - beautiful views, stunning buildings and delightful city.

Matera is a magical place!
Matera is a magical place! I would highly recommend it if you are looking for a trip back into history paired with nature's beauty. Don't forget to take one of the many walking tours into the caves and cisterns, and if you are at all interested in nature and hiking, don't miss the Gravina di Matera, crossing the suspension bridge and hiking up the opposite hillside. Getting around this ancient city requires lots of up and down walking, but the effort is more than worth it! There are fascinating discoveries around every corner and in every nook and cranny of this stunning place...nothing to be ashamed of any longer!

Wow, there aren't many places in the world like Matera.
Wow, there aren't many places in the world like Matera. A whole city built into the side of a mountain, probably the closest to Petra in a sense but much more accessible.
The hotel we stayed at had a cave accommodation experience but at luxury standards (Pianelle Resort) which really added to the overall experience.
Be ready to scale some steps and go down some steep downhill stairs. Unless you plan to take a tuk-tuk or an open tour shuttle get ready to walk and see some amazing views.
Restaurants fill up fast so book ahead if you can.

Matera requires a little effort but is unique and worth a...
Matera requires a little effort but is unique and worth a visit. Not just another hill top town. Strongly suggest you hire a local guide for at least half a day and don't waste most of that time hiking the canyon. There a plenty of hardly discovered things to see and do.

Good smart hotel with very nice staff.
Special mention to a young man on reception and a lady on service at breakfast.
There are 2 carparks nearby but we parked at one 3 minutes walk further away for only €10 for 24hrs.
Excellent breakfast with some tables outside.
Lovely rooftop bar from 4pm. Good views.
The location is amazing. A 3 minute walk to a terrace with wonderful views of the caves and old stone houses.
Matera warrants a 2night stay and we did an excellent 2hr walking tour of the old area.

As soon as I arrived, Anna and Marilla were so welcoming. My room was at the top of the house and was spacious and light. Everything is so well thought out from the lay out of the room to the outdoor space. It was spotlessly clean and the bedding was so comfortable too. The hotel is a minutes walk from the centre of Matera and parking was just across the road. I would stay here again and highly recommend this hotel.

Breakfast was great , it set me up for the day .Cooked food and cold cuts were available .The hotel is near the main bus stop in Matera and there are 2 supermarkets close by.There are also good pizza restaurants about a 5/10 min walk away.

The cave was interesting - glad we chose to stay there. It was very basic, but what do you expect from a cave. We had everything we needed. Great location. Matera is incredibly interesting - a must visit on your next trip to Italy.
