I like Atami because both the seaside and the mountains can be enjoyed. Hot springs, museums, temples are also available, and the access from Tokyo is good. People with different hobbies or interests can easily have a good time here.
Unfortunately it rained most of the time we were there. We used the Yu Yu bus which is a hop on hop off sightseeing bus which goes on a circular route past the main attractions. The best shops and restaurants were in the two covered arcades by the railway station but some restaurants were only open lunchtimes. The Ginza area has bars and restaurants but it is not a late night place, some restaurants closed at 9pm. The main purpose of our visit was to spend a couple of days relaxing in the onsen so we didnt go to many tourist sights.
A very cute welcoming town with the ocean and mountains. We had Won ton ramen in an alley restaurant (for 14 customers only) near the beach. We waited ~ 40 min. to get a seat at the counter, but it was worth it. Dinners were at our hotel, with a "5 star" restaurant food/presentation. There are buses from the train station. The bus we took from the hotel to town did not run at the beachfront on weekends. We took a taxi to go back to the hotel. We went to see the Castle, but had been remodeled. We visited the Shrine with the Holy Tree, and walking downhill, saw a nice temple ( but closed that time). We had a very pleasant walk at the beach, and went almost till the end of the pier. We ended up at a Sea/Food Festival near there. No time to go to the MOA. Be prepared to go uphill and downhill...if walking.
Atami has very nice facilities, i.e., onsen, lobby provides coffee and tea, clean and comfortable rooms. The staff provided excellent service and was very attentive to our requests. Shuttle service was available to the train station. Overall our stay was an A+.
Atami is good place to eat Sea Food. The Shashimi is great with good price. Atami is very small city, take one day by You-Yu Bus tour can go around the city. Only bad think for me the hotel I have booked with bad feeling for walk up the hill, then my room is 7 floor up with no elevator.
Atami is a pleasant coastal area just a couple hours south of Tokyo. It is difficult to recommend for tourists staying in Japan for less than 2 weeks; more suited for people living and working in Tokyo who wish to have a weekend getaway. The hotels and restaurants reflect this; I don't think many of them are very accustomed to receiving non-Japanese-speaking tourists.
