We really enjoyed taking in the views of Beppu from the ropeway. The hot sand baths were a relaxing experience. We enjoyed exploring along the waterfront. Take time to wander the smaller streets with independent cafes and shops- everyone was very friendly. The 7 hells of beppu were impressive though busy. There are lots of great shops in the local train station for souvenirs.

Great for onsens and the like.

Great for onsens and the like. Must try the heated sand burial, either at the Beppu Beach Sand Bath on the beach with a view or at one of the onsens that offer it. I recommend Hyotan Onsen, but be aware that the saunas are quite hot, as are the baths. Also visit Yufuin and the cable car (or ropeway as it's called). Get a bus pass to get around. After a full day, I recommend dropping into Beppu Brewery for a local craft beer or heading to the container shops just up from the Beppu Beach sand bath for a cocktail.

Cute little town that has a lot going for it.

Cute little town that has a lot going for it. Nice cafes and bars, lots of restaurants (not heaps of choice for vegetarians but doable thanks to onigiri) and a place with so many incredible onsen. Is that your thing (it is definitely my thing) then this is a good place to spend a good few days. Also close to some amazing hiking spots. Having a car is definitely a major plus. I didn’t and that made things a bit more difficult, for getting out of Beppu and into the mountains and peninsula.

We got the Beppu 24h Excursion pass and used it to see... 1) The 7 hells 2) The hells museum 3) Beppu tower 4) Myoban Yunosato Onsen In the end, I don't think the pass was worth it to us, though it could be for others: 1) I really liked Umi-jigoku and Oniishi-jigoku, but after that the value of the hells dropped off considerably. So if I were taking friends a second time, I'd probably just pay for entry to those first two individually. 2) The museum was an impressive experience; I wanted more science and more specific history, but I appreciate the narrative that they created and how they told it. Definitely worth going to if you haven't been before. 3) Beppu tower was pretty disappointing; it's not even taller than the hotel we were staying in. It was "free" because we had the pass, but definitely not worth going to for 800 yen (the usual entry price) 4) Myoban Yunosato onsen was neat, but rather small without a great view. I would recommend it for the historical feel and the low-price (600 yen), but if you want a more varied / interesting onsen experience, then I'd recommend the more expensive Hyoutan onsen Hyoutan onsen was pretty cool and for 2000 yen per person you can go to a sand bath (bury yourself in sand heated by geothermal steam) then rinse off and go to the public baths. The public baths are varied with indoor and outdoor pools, steam rooms, and waterfall-massage spouts. Then there's a jigoku-mushi restaurant where you can buy small dishes that then get steamed by the geothermal vents. I really liked it, even though it was more expensive than a typical onsen experience is. The traditional bamboo crafts center was also very cool, with a lot of interesting and unique examples of bamboo implements and art pieces. We got to see graduating students displaying their final projects, also, which offered even more unique pieces to look at.

If you want to really feel like you are within an "onsen...

If you want to really feel like you are within an "onsen town", this could be the best in all of Japan. The view from the castle has you looking out over countless steam stacks, each indicating a spot with an onsen. Natural hot water flows through all of the city's drainage. Everyone seems to be relaxed and moving just a little more slowly. The whole city smells like an onsen right when you leave the train. It is a surreal city to be in and definitely worth visiting if you are spending any amount of time in Kyushu. The best onsen is "Hyotan Onsen", it is near the "7 Hells" and is something I will remember for my whole life!

Beppu has a lot to offer.

Beppu has a lot to offer. Our highlight was Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden. Watch about 900 Japanese macaques roam freely and interact with one another. They come down from the mountain, and you are in immediate proximity with them. A very ethical 'zoo'. We spent 2.5 hours there in amazement. It is set in a beautiful environment.

Modern hotel in this onsen town which was the perfect base to explore the Hells of Beppu. Less than 5 minutes walk from JR Beppu station. The staff were very professional and spoke good english. The hotel had an onsen at level 12 which provided a nice view. The laundry room had 4 machines that did washing and drying altogether so it was very convenient. One cycle for about 3kg of clothes took 2 hours in total. The triple room was considered quite spacious.

Breakfast is ok but if you are in Japan, you may find some local coffeshops with awesome coffee and sandwiches. However, this hotel is fine for this money (not expensive) and managers there are really great. They also have Onsen (Japan sauna) and I really enjoyed it. If you are planning a trip to Beppu, you should defenetely choose this hotel.
