Kobe itself is quite interesting from the harbour to the hills as well as the outer suburbs. I have family in Kobe and always enjoy visiting. It's a lot more laid back than Osaka and Tokyo. As with most cities in Japan, transport, food and shopping is always good. There are also many interesting places to sightsee and activities to experience. Motomachi chinatown is worth seeing, as is Harbourland. Take a ride on the ferris wheel and check out the city from the air. Mt Rokko is worth visiting...take the cable car for something different. Kitano district gives a good view of the old English & European homes of past eras. Go to Sannomiya and walk under the trainline through the alleways. Transport is easy and plentiful.

Kobe was incredible.

Kobe was incredible. It's a city of jazz and hidden tiny bars. Nunobiki Herb Gardens is a must do as is the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art. The perfect calm reprieve in the Japan city itinerary, I will definitely be back.

Kobe is a beautiful city to visit.

Kobe is a beautiful city to visit. There are lots of different areas to explore, covered arcades and shopping malls, little streets with boutique shops and small friendly bars and cafe's. There is a lot of young talent creating coffee and food offerings. The proximity to nature was great for us too, we could go walking in the forest during the morning and walk into the city for coffees, wines, food and shopping in the afternoon and evening. And the beautiful forested hills are within view of most areas of the city. We particularly enjoyed the Takenaka Carpentry Museum, Nunobiki Ropeway, herb gardens and water falls, Sorakuen Garden, and the Port of Kobe Earthquake Memorial Park. We loved the sake, we loved the cakes. There is a lot of different food to try, and the people were generally friendly, welcoming and tolerant of our patchy Japanese. We are planning to visit Kobe again.

Kobe is a wonderful city in Japan, that is very close to the many attractions in Osaka, but also only about 1 hour away from Himeji and its famous castle. Harborland is a great shopping spot with wonderful views at night and a great Brazilian beef restaurant. I often stay on Port Island with its super-convenient Port Liner monorail that connects to the major hub of Sannomiya Station.

Kobe is worth a stop between Osaka and Himeji — in fact Osaka melts into the city almost like a suburb. However, it does not boast the raucousness of Osaka: Kobe is a reserved and dignified sibling. The city is compact, and one can walk from the seafront to the hills in an hour and to most attractions centred around Sannomiya district. Many of Kobe's attractions belie the city's entrepôt heritage. The Kobe Kitano Ijinkan-gai is a quaint historic district of former foreign residences (anything British is inevitably turned into a homage to Sherlock Holmes). There are some great walking trails in the hills behind the city.

Kobe offers much to see and do.

Kobe offers much to see and do. More days there could easily be filled with worthwhile adventures. Historical and environmental environments are very nice. It is also a bit more off the beaten track of tourist traffic except for Himeji Castle, which is spectacular. Transportation and shopping and dining offerings are excellent. The Maya Ropeway is fun and hiking options on the mountain beautiful. The waterfront area offers many historical and recreational options. The Port of Kobe Tower is worth the visit and has a variety of attractions.

Of all the hotels I have stayed at in Japan, this was the largest by far. It is similar to a business hotel, in a good way. Rooms were great. Location to Kobe waterfront was good too. Also to restaurants and metro.
