This is our best stay in Japan ... if you want to experience with Japanese an old house like shirakawago but with full modern modification ... This is the place ... stay and enjoy the area with a very small population but also a very kind heart welcoming from the mother of the host . The location must be reached by private car, and please provide your own food to bring .. you can cook here ... there's no restaurant or shop around.... just green and slow ... Thankyou okasan ... we will come back someday 🙏

We loved everything about this hotel, from the easy contactless check in with a virtual dinosaur (!) to the small but well-designed room, to the fun toy and kutaniware vending machines in the lobby, to the amazing light show on the walkway in front of the hotel. Such a super cool place to stay! It was also very conveniently located, just a minute from the train station on one side (but no train noise in the room) and the really cool science center on the other side. Restaurants and shops were a short walk away. We would stay here again and highly recommend it to others.

Kontani-san is the most caring host we met on our 3 week adventure in Japan and the house has an unforgettable character! He gave us plenty of local recommendations on where to eat and where to go (also created custom made itinerary for us) and was always open for our questions. Thanks to him we were able to get to know Japanese culture a little deeper. We had lovely tastings with him in the sake bar which is also located in the house and will never forget this stay!

Instead of the modern smells of plastic walls and floors and chemical paints, you get the scent of cedar carpentry, sand walls, and tatami - enjoy while it lasts, fewer people can build such house every year. You have some of the most beautiful jinjas around, and for us, an easy cycling road up the valley of tetori into some of the most stunning traditional japanese landscapes of rice paddies and forests.
