Governor's Grand, Flamboyant Villas, and Jetwing Lake - Level 1 Safe & Secure got great room view-related reviews from travelers in Dambulla.
Dambulla is one of the most congested places in Sri Lanka. I would not stay overnight. You can see the caves and the Laughing Buddha in two hours and easily go on to Sigiriya, which is nice, quiet, and relaxing. Sigiriya makes a much better hub to see other places and do a safari. I did an 'in-line- tour from Colombo to Trincomalee, to Pasikudah, Polonnaruwa, Sigiriya and then Dambulla. After Polonnaruwa, Dambulla could be missed and on to Kandy or Anuradhapura and Minhitale, both excellent sights.
We struggled with Dambulla which was not a tourist town. Places to eat and drink were limited and there was little to do in the town. It's proximity to Sigirya and The Caves were the reason we chose to go there and we did have excellent days out at both.
It’s a stretched out place. The guesthouses are located quite far from the city centre (though it didn’t seem like there was much to do there either) and theres only a few restaurants near the guesthouses spots, which only offer a curry and rice buffet. Stay here to climb Sigiriya or Pidurangala and then move on.
Dambulla is rightly a favourite location for several visits - especially Sigiriya and the cave temples but also less well known places like the Pink Mountain and Aukana statue. The bus system is however chaotic as all the long distance ones just stop in the main street and you have to know which numbers go where. Luckily almost all have numbers and English as well as Singhalese and Timil destination boards, and they are very frequent.
We started our tour from Anuradhapura which is a bit rural. Despite this, we loved it and thought Dambulla would be the same. We were very wrong! Dambulla is much busier and touristic because of the Lion Rock. It's also an intersection for access to a lot of other cities, so you see a lot more businesses, people and cars. During our stay in Dambulla we visited Pidurangala and the herbal garden. I highly recommend Pidurangala, which is just behind the lion rock. Its quite an adventure to climb Pidurangala and its not easy at all, but you will love it. A lot of the locals go to Pidurangala so you will meet them there. They're so nice and helpful. I struggled at some spots and they were patient with me and assisted without asking. Everyone was helping each other and it was beautiful to see the interaction between the locals and tourists. The herbal garden was also good. I enjoyed learning about the medicinal properties of everyday herbs, but I strongly advice you to spend carefully. The items are very expensive. I have np doubt that they work but do your research first.
The rock cave temples were very impressive and some of the best temples I've seen in Sri Lanka so far. The temples are filled with many many buddha statues and beautifull wall drawings. After seeing these temples at the top, the golden buddha and temple at the bottom of the mountain were a bit of a let down.

The owner got in touch with us before we arrived to explain exactly where to tell the bus to stop 50m from the Resort. But also offered a free pick up from the bus Station. We found the hotel without a problem showed the bus driver where to stop and arrived without a drama. We were greeted with enthusiasm from the beginning! 😊 My friend was over the moon when he offered her an empty room so she could do yoga the next morning for no extra charge and he also found her some medical advise on an infection on her skin We walked up to the Cave Temple which is a 500m walk from the hotel.... and went back for dinner which was amazing. Pumpkin in coconut sauce and the home made coleslaw was amazing 😲😲 There's also a pool which looked very inviting but unfortunately it was raining Definately recommend this accommodation to anyone passing through Dambulla Thanks again for looking after us 💕💕

Everything about the resort was really nice. The staff was super friendly and helpful. Food was absolutely delicious. I recieved an upgrade to a chalet on half board basis upon arrival, which was a great pleasure. I also got a complimentary kayaking down the stream, and a bird watching tour around the property. The location is breathtakingly beautiful. Nature surrounds you from everywhere. I even had few peacocks walking right outside my room. The mountain view from the bed was so beautiful. A definetely worth stay for a serene time. Good for a nature lover.
