Beatiful river and big amount of elephants! But they are controlled by humans (wich is not natural) some guys keep screaming at them and using hooks to scare them, some elephsnts tight on iron chains! To see elephants in Sri Lanka i recomend Yala national park where they are free and wild, their natural habitat, without humans bathing them ore telling them what to do...ore where to walk... ore riding elephants to impress tourist and sell tours! I dont agree with humsns riding elephants ore bathing them!
Elephant orphanage was more of a tourist attraction than anything relating to conservation or animal welfare Although it was cool to see many he elephants bathing in the river, many were chained up as they weren’t well trained enough yet and would run away or harm tourists. A lot of those working at orphanage were riding the elephants and brandishing pointed sticks at them which the elephants moved quickly away from. I saw some staff using them on some elephants as well. A lot of the elephants had no chains on and then were chained up at various points throughout the day- am not sure why- seemed unnecessary. Although the elephants had more freedom and seemed better treated than a lot of Asian countries, I wouldn’t say it was particularly great in terms of animal welfare, not quite what I would expect from an ‘elephant orphanage’. A mixed experience
Great for seeing elephants although many are chained and clearly used for making money from tourists. Pinnawala itself is a typical tourist trap. Prices are incredibly inflated compared to what you would pay across the rest of Sri Lanka and everything is geared towards making money from you (even when you pay for activities like feeding the elephants at the orphanage, you have somebody from the organisation stood next to you forcing more fruit into your hand and telling you to hurry so the next customer can sit down). May make a nice stop on the way to somewhere else depending on where you are going, otherwise there are better places to visit.
Don't forget to visit ApeGama, a place something like a model good old Sunhalese village. You can enjoy Welimal (Traditional Sinhalese tea like dring). Elephants and sight seeing are okay. Kids will enjoy a lot!
The elephant orphanage is a sad place for elephants. Many of these beautiful beast were chained up and looked sad. Babies separated from their mums in obvious distress chained in small enclosures. The mahouts were all very angry all the time. The elephants were terrified of the mahouts. Sad
Nice place, beautiful countryside around it...some of our favourite in Sri Lanka. I didnt like how touristy it was around the elephant orphanage and I felt sad about how the elephants were treated. Food was expensive in the area but there was a great family run restaurant down a quiet side street. Easy to miss as it's small but the people and food were great and half the price of the rest of the places. Highly recomend them :)

The homestay was very clean and comfortable. We picked it because it was a great location to visit the Kandy and the elephant orphanage. We rented the motorcycle Gayashan had and it was very easy to get around. The breakfast and dinner were absolutely fantastic. Gayashan was super helpful and gave us a lot of insight on Srilanka. We had picked the homestay because of the high reviews and from our point of view they could even be higher! Not to underestimate the hot shower :-)
