Essaouira has developed from a hippie hangout to become a top Morocco beach resort with good surfing conditions. Its 18th-century medina is almost European in feel and narrow streets lead under low arches past fragrant spice stalls and local artisans selling everything from wood carvings to faience pottery.
Dotted around the souk are many traditional-style riads on Booking.com, hidden behind tiled façades and blue doors. Other Essaouira accommodation options include luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap apartments, and B&Bs near Essaouira Airport.
Also bright blue are the rowing boats bobbing gently in small harbours sheltered by the Scala of the Port, a wide walkway with ramparts through which several historic cannons poke out. At the end is the Citadel, a small fortress overlooking Mogador Island - the largest of the Iles Purpuraires, so-called for the purple shells found in their rocks that were once used to produce dyes for Roman senator togas.
Another fortress – Bordj El Berod – lies in pieces on the long, sandy beach south of the marina. In the opposite direction the coastline is more rocky and lined by the Scala of the Kasbah, the crenellated walls protecting the medina. Horseriding and camel safaris are available on the beach and you can also visit a Berber village inland.
Very friendly place and felt safe. The weather was perfect, when we discovered correct prices of things we enjoyed the local restaurants and cafes.
They really need more rubbish bins and better ways to dispose of the rubbish.

I had a lot of fun, i think a long weekend is the perfect length unless you have a hotel with a pool (that isnt common in Esssaouria though). A long weekend is enough time to see the sights do activities such as camel rides and surfing and eat lots of good food - more than 3 nights and i think i would have started to get bored :)
Pumpkin cafe had awesome cakes 10/10
Mandala had a great brunch menu very wll priced - we visited there twice
La Mediana Beach resturant was lovely for some Fresh fish and a more 'dress up' dinner
Things are very fairly priced and people just let you be you dont really get hackled like in other places

Essaouira has a unique atmosphere and aesthetic that has to...
Essaouira has a unique atmosphere and aesthetic that has to be experienced. From designer boutiques and fine dining to derelict alleyways and the chaos of the fishing harbour, it has an enticing, dreamlike quality. When the mist rolls in from the sea, the whole place takes on an eerie aspect - but it always feels safe, the people are friendly and the medina is full of life. On this occasion, we didn’t experience the trademark Atlantic winds, but I have in the past and they really just add more character.
We particularly enjoyed the rooftop bars, a beautiful dinner at Madada and fresh fish grilled right by the fishing boats in the harbour. We enjoyed time in the spice souk (which weirdly shares a square with the fish souk), sitting with the cats outside Tara Cafe and sipping a lovely coffee at Sisterhood. We bought bowls and cups from the stalls underneath the ramparts and listened to folk rock on the roof of Salut Morocco.
The famous beach is deceptively long and perfect for an amble. Our only bad experience was with Cheval Essaouira, who gave us a chaotic and rather unsafe horse-riding experience. I guess the lesson for us was that animal tourism on the beach is probably best avoided. We got over it, though, and really enjoyed our visit.
Essaouira is like nowhere else, and offers a perfect antidote to the hustle and bustle of Marrakech.

The variety of wares on offer by the traders is unsurpassed. We particularly loved the wood products with marquetry (inlaid wood) and purchased 2 beautiful little side tables which are actually crafted in Essaouira.

Im finishing my 30 days trip in Morocco and this was hands down my best stay. and the guy who manages the place is the most wonderful person who makes you feel so welcomed! I had my flight at 7am and guard walked me to the Bab Marrakech and stopped me a taxi and even bargained a price for me. The place is very clean, almost hotel like feeling. Great showers, high speed internet and very very comfy beds!
This hotel is not 5 star by European standards but it's still very nice. The staff are lovely and the private area on the beach and the pool are lovely. It's in a brilliant location within a very easy, flat walk to the Medina. Our room was big with lots of space and storage, a safe and minibar
My absolute favourite were the horse walks on the beach. The hotel has horse stables and the walk on the horses was amazing. The location is absolutely great, the sunsets are lovely as the hotel is just by the beach. Food was very good and hotel is just gorgeous
Everything was great. Especially likable and helpful staff. A friendly vibe, The hotel has charming rooms, each with their own design. You can see that a lot of thought went into creating this. The best hotel I have been to during my time in Morocco.
Absolutely everything! Very atmospheric hotel located by the beach. Staff is very helpful and nice. The breakfast is very tasty and included eggs (at request). Would recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Essaouira.
