Located in central Matamata, 20 minutes' drive from the Hobbiton movie set, Horse and Jockey Inn offers 50 MB of free Wi-Fi. An absolute shock. At last I have found a proper pub in the middle of town where you can get a drink, a meal and a bed for the night. These places used to be very common. Now this is the exception. What has satisfied travellers for many a long year has now been exceeded by the expectations of tourists to find "something different" at every turn. What is wrong with a warm welcome from a barmaid, a few drinks, a good meal and a comfy bed for the night! Call me old fashioned but pubs like the Horse and Jockey should be the norm, not the exception. Without a doubt the best accommodation I have had on this trip to New Zealand and anywhere else for that matter. Pubs like this used to be in every town. Unfortunately very difficult to find these days. I will be back, if for nothing else than the experience of staying in "a proper pub"!!
Featuring garden views, Denchys B&B provides accommodations with a balcony and an electric tea pot, around 10 miles from Hobbiton Movie Set. The hosts are lovely and the place is beautiful. You have a great view and is very easy to get there. 100% recommended and for sure will stay there again. Everything you need for a comfy stay is there.
Offering garden views, The House With No Nails in Matamata has accommodations, a bar, a shared lounge and a garden. The bed and breakfast features both WiFi and private parking free of charge. Beautiful building in nice location, within easy reach of local attractions and amenities, with lovely views over fields and mountains. Very comfortable and tastefully furnished rooms. Tasty breakfast (with possibility of other meals on request). Friendly and very helpful hosts. Highly recommended.
Walnut Lodge B&B offers accommodations in Matamata. Every room at this bed and breakfast is air conditioned and features a flat-screen TV. What a stunning piece of land! The condo we stayed at did everything we needed, and their garden is just an amazing paradise, especially for kids, with lots of toys, a trampu, and an adorable doggy roaming about.
Villa Walton Bed & Breakfast offers accommodations within a historic homestead, established in 1904. The Villa stay at Walton exceeded every expectation i had. I got so much value for the money i spent. My girlfriend and i absolutely loved it and would go there again just to stay at rhe cottage again.the hosts were very hospitable as well
Matamata has lots of places to eat, is a pick up point for Hobbiton,a racecourse nearby, the Historic tower and village which is very interesting the theme being from horse to tractor, information about local personalities connected with the place, history etc. There is a walkway from town to the Tower and another through the garden called The Drive which winds between streets on both sides on the town. The Wairere falls, the highest in the North Island, are close as is Te Aroha, another small town of interest.
Loved Hobbiton. Amazing experience. Horse and Jockey Hotel was excellent, great food, great staff. Found people were generally friendly and helpful. Was easy to get around. Overall a neat place to visit.
So much to see. We liked especially the ancient looking bath in a secluded spot in a camping ground. There was even a piece of acient Corinthian part of a column. The restaurant we ate was well patronised and the staff there were super efficient and friendly
Hobbiton is perfect very nice. The view of the mountains is very relaxing. I didn't like to travel from the accommodation to the town all the time when you need to go for dinner or lunch in my opinion was far. Opal pools I didn't like I was thinking they have more pools and better presentation but not. The owner of the accommodation told me they are so beautiful but not really and you can find waterfalls for seeing close to the pools but you have to prepared for a walk around 3 hours in going there to the top and come back.
I/We like Matamata & travel through with regularity on my/our way South to Poverty Bay & Hawkes Bay via Rotorua/Taupo. Its our 'regular pit-stop' for bathroom & food. Lots of food choices from KFC/McD's to a range of cafes. Perfect for people traveling through, like us.
Nice town which is close to Tauranga, Hamilton and only 2 hours from Auckland. The town had lots of places to eat and shop. Wairere Falls is a must hike. The town is famous for Hobiton which we didn’t visit
Walnut lodge rooms were extremely comfortable and clean, the welcome very accommodating and friendly. I had come off two long international flights and overslept check out. they were very understanding and even though they had new guests checking in later, I wasn't rushed or made to feel unwelcome. A lovely selection of goodies for breakfast was delivered in the evening, we stayed here to visit Hobbiton and would recommend staying here if in Matamata
A unique home, where Jen and Dewi made us feel very comfortable and welcome. More than a B&B, it was a wonderful experience in a home that has been crafted with love and filled with stories. We really enjoyed the chats, the comfort - especially the bed which was amazing, and the wonderful bathroom which dried our wet soggy clothes and shoes after exploring Matamata and Hamilton in pouring rain!
The cabin is very private, has everything you possibly need in it. The breakfast is great: fresh fruit, cookies, coffee/tea and so on. The room looks like a hotel room. Extremely clean, has all information that you need about the area in the folder. Wonderful! Linda is very welcoming and lovely lady, she really tried to acomódate me with my boyfriends bday set up. Thank you so much!
The property was located very close to the central area of Matamata was very easy to find with Willie and Faye's instructions included in the booking email. Property seemed very nicely appointed and definitely very clean. The two were quick to respond to our inquires (until we left their property, at which point they refused to talk to us, more on that below).
Glenn made us very welcome and his knowledge of the area was excellent and helped us find places to go. Breakfast and dinner was excellent and used local produce and salad from the Garden View from room fantastic a peaceful and quiet place but very near to matamata I can honestly say that this is one of the best bed and breakfast I have stay in
We were centrally located in Matamata, only 3 minutes to the town center where all the restaurants are, and 15 minutes to Hobbiton. Our room was clean, nicely decorated, and the king size bed was soooo comfortable! The owner, Kate, brought a beautiful delicious breakfast each day.
Great welcome at reception from friendly hosts. The apartment that we stayed in was very large with a nice spa bath. Everything was clean. There is even a little outdoor area with big sliding doors to let fresh air in. Perfect accommodation for a weekend stay in Matamata.
First night we were informed hotel had gone into receivership. Were not informed about key code changes & couldn't get in until another guest came out door & told us the new code. Very slack service, no towel changes, no meals.
Beautiful location about a mile from Hobitton movie set tour lovley couple Briney and Conn owners. GREAT HOSTS! Would stay again when I’m in Matamata NZ. Wonderful 3 beddroom converted barn house great value! AAAAA.
The rooms were large. Great parking had our own carport. Close to Matamata to pick up food. Staff were helpful and friendly. Short drive to Hobbiton.
Met the expectations of a central motel. Well maintained.
Joy and Ian were wonderful hosts, such beautiful surroundings. Terrific breakfasts all make this an awesome break away.
fresh milk, very clean room, great price, friendly reception.
