Nizwa FAQs: Tips for every trip

All trips

What's the best area to stay?

The area around Nizwa Fort and the traditional souq is the most practical choice for accommodation. Staying in the city centre puts you within walking distance of markets and historical sites, while offering straightforward access to transport routes for exploring the surrounding mountains.

What's Nizwa best known for?

Nizwa is the former capital of Oman. Travellers visit the 17th-century Nizwa Fort to walk along its circular tower. The adjacent Nizwa Souq operates as a daily market trading regional silver, spices, and pottery. Date palm oases and the Al Hajar mountains surround the city.

How many days should I stay?

A two to three-day stay provides time to explore Nizwa Fort and the local souq. This length of trip also allows you to use your accommodation as a base for day trips into the Hajar Mountains or surrounding wadis before continuing your Oman itinerary.

First visit

What’s the easiest way to explore in Nizwa?

Hiring a car or booking a private transfer is the most practical way to explore Nizwa and the surrounding mountains. Within the city centre, walking is the standard method to navigate the historic fort and souq. Local taxis are readily available for short trips.

Where should I stay on my first trip?

Staying near the historic city centre places you within walking distance of Nizwa Fort and the traditional souq. This central location offers direct access to local markets, traditional Omani dining, and regional transport links for trips to the surrounding Al Hajar Mountains.

Family stays

What’s the best thing to do in Nizwa with children?

Families can climb the steps and walk the defensive walls at Nizwa Fort. Next door, Nizwa Souq features distinct market sections for dates and pottery. A short drive away, Falaj Daris park provides a shaded environment with functioning traditional water channels.

What’s the best way to get around with a family?

Booking a rental car is the most practical option for families navigating Nizwa and the surrounding region. A personal vehicle provides the space and flexibility needed to visit the historic fort and local markets at your own pace. Alternatively, you can arrange pre-booked private transfers.

Where should I stay with children?

Families staying near the Nizwa city centre benefit from direct walking access to Nizwa Fort and the daily souq. If you require more space, choosing a resort on the outskirts provides family-sized rooms, swimming pools and convenient parking for driving into the nearby Hajar Mountains.

Romantic trips

What’s the most romantic thing to do in Nizwa?

Walk together through the 17th-century Nizwa Fort and climb the circular watchtower for views across the palm oases. In the afternoon, browse the stalls of Nizwa Souq to find regional silver and dates, or arrange a shared day trip to the Jebel Akhdar mountains.

Where should I stay for a romantic getaway?

Choose hotels near Nizwa Fort for direct walking access to the pottery and silver stalls at Nizwa Souq. For increased privacy, book traditional mud-brick guesthouses or mountain resorts in the nearby Al Hajar range to access quiet outdoor spaces and elevated valley views.

What’s the best way to explore in Nizwa?

Renting a four-wheel drive is the most practical way for couples to explore Nizwa and navigate the nearby Hajar Mountains independently. While the central streets around Nizwa Fort and the main souq are entirely walkable, booking private transfers offers convenient transit for wider day trips.

Work trips

What can I do in Nizwa between meetings?

Walk through the central Nizwa Souq to observe local trade and purchase regional dates or Omani silver. You can also visit the adjacent Nizwa Fort for a straightforward cultural excursion that fits easily into a tight schedule between your corporate meetings.

How should I get around in Nizwa?

Hiring a vehicle is the most practical way for business travellers to navigate Nizwa. Road networks connect central hotels directly to commercial districts. If you prefer not to drive, arrange private transfers or local taxis in advance through your accommodation to maintain your meeting schedule.

Where's the most convenient place to stay for work?

Business travellers visiting Nizwa should look for accommodation near the city centre or along Route 15. These locations provide straightforward access to commercial districts and government offices. Properties here typically feature dedicated meeting rooms, reliable internet and easy access to private car services.

The old town o Nizwa is a cute place to visit for a weekend away. On a Friday it is buzzing from the early morning goat market, until the local produce market (where we ate the most delicious fresh peach) and the Friday night life. Walking along the wall all lit up at night is amazing. If you don't know where to go, just ask any local as they are more than happy to help out wandering tourists. They are very proud of their county and happy that you are visiting.

Beautiful old town city that remains unexplored by many influencers, if I should say. Maybe that's the beauty of it. Loved every bit of our stay in this cozy town. Mountains were much cooler and had its own charm. Would suggest to travel in winter.

Nizwa is a Historical place with near by attractions like Nizwa souq, Fort, and a home for Falaj Daris, With largest falaj systems used for irrigation purposes and recognised as UNESCO world heritage site, A traditional oman place, Inside Nizwa souq we have markets for fruits and vegetables, Spices shops, traditional Omani halwa shops, pottery and crockery traditional items Inside Nizwa area there are few good restaurants for Arabic and Indian foods, being a south Indian typical malabari my all time favourite is Tely Restaurant where you can get south indian and Chinese food items, Juices, tea and snacks too There for shopping experience travellers can try Nizwa Grand mall

Nizwa Old Town is fascinating.

Nizwa Old Town is fascinating. Almost all the old mud houses are still there, most of them renovated and in good shape - and inhabited. The ancient city wall has been renovated and can be visited by walking on top of the wall. The Souk is extremely nice to visit any time. A special plus for the cattle market on Friday mornings. The number one "must-see" Nizwa fort is really worth a visit - don't miss the museum, and of course the sunset view from the top of the fort.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Nizwa Fort and spent...

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to Nizwa Fort and spent several hours exploring the fort and castle. It is exceptionally well refurbished and presented - with information boards at various locations and access to almost all the rooms and rooftop areas. Just when you think you have seen everything, another suite of rooms appears, or another level of the rooftop becomes accessible to you. There are toilets there and also a coffee shop together with some small gift shops. There were also some re-enactors dancing and singing in local Omani costumes who were very skilful and who moved around the fort area so that almost wherever you are you encountered them. We also explored the garden area where there were a few goats and rabbits for children to enjoy, and we saw several wells with devices for lifting the water up to ground level. This place is a must see if you come to Nizwa and would easily occupy two and a half hours of your time.

OLD TOWN IN NIZWA, WITH IT'S THE FORT, SOUK, AND THE GOAT...

OLD TOWN IN NIZWA, WITH IT'S THE FORT, SOUK, AND THE GOAT MARKET IS DEFINITELY WORTH VISITING. WE DECIDED TO VISIT THE OLD TOWN TWICE, ONCE DURING THE DAY AND THE SECOND TIME WHEN WE COME BACK IN THE EARLY EVENING, AND AS IT WAS FRIDAY NIGHT, THE OFFICIAL LAST DAY OF THE WORKING WEEK, IT WAS FULL OF OMANI FAMILIES JUST ENJOYING THEMSELVES AT THE END OF THE WEEK, SO IT WAS JUST THE RIGHT MIX OF TOURISTS AND ORDINARY OMANIS. NIZWA AT NIGHT LOOKS AMAZING AND THE ATMOSPHERE IS INCREDIBLE, WITH THE COLOURS AND SMELLS THAT WILL FOREVER REMING ME OF THAT SPECIAL TOWN.

We really appreciated the traditional Omani bread prepared fresh for breakfast, which was a lovely local touch, alongside other standard breakfast options. The bed was very comfortable, and our request for an additional blanket was fulfilled promptly, which we truly appreciated. Parking at the property was very convenient and easy. The property is beautiful, has a really nice, relaxed vibe, and its location is excellent—right next to Nizwa Fort.

Accommodation is very fine, clean and silence although it is in the centre of Nizwa. Housekeeper is a extremely kind and helpful. Breakfast is served in tradition style, it is very tasteful and delicious! Parking is possible in area of hotel. The hotel has green and silence place with trees, plants and water. The hotel is near the centre (Nizwa Suq, Fort) - it's about 15 min on foot. There is also café here. I very recommend this accommodation.

I really enjoyed my two nights in Alaqur View Inn. Perfect location to visit the city by walk, near to the fort and the souk. Really nice place on the edge of the old town. Be aware access is via a narrow road, we parked in the nearby souk carpark and then the hotel staff were kind enough to guide us in. Well worth it though - it is a really nice hotel and then so easy to walk in and out of the old town at Nizwa - one of the highlights of our trip.
