Called the Amber Capital of the World, Gdańsk is the major shipping seaport and the most beautiful city along the Polish Baltic coast. It has everything a city of this scale needs: a fascinating history, great architecture and a friendly atmosphere!
Also known as Danzig due to its complex past with periods of Polish, German and self-rule, the city is part of the Tricity urban area together with the port city of Gdynia and the popular spa town, Sopot. It’s also a birthplace of the world-famous Solidarity movement, which helped to bring down the Communist rule in Poland initiating the end of the Cold War era.
Its charming buildings were rebuilt in a historical style after the near-complete destruction during the World War II. The colourful town houses of the Old Town can be admired by boat on the Motlawa River or enjoyed while strolling along the popular Long Street and Long Market.
While in Gdańsk, make sure you visit the 15th-century St Mary’s Church, the largest brick church in Europe, and you make a wish at the Neptune Fountain, the city’s patron. While in town, try the legendary local Goldwasser liqueur with 22 karat gold flakes!

Mass tourism is slowly chewing away the original experience...
Mass tourism is slowly chewing away the original experience you are looking for in Gdansk, it's basically overcrowded and loosing its charm like we have experienced it for 6 years ago.
But not all hope is lost, there are still places where you are received well and can enjoy this beautiful city.
I would recommend you spend only a few days in Gdansk and explore the surroundings like Malbork and Jastarnia and Hel for example.
You will find less beaten down paths and a glimp of real Poland including friendly people who aren't beaten down by waves of drunken rude tourists.
If you want to see mankind at its best or an view into Dante's inferno the Gdansk main street offers after 23h00 abundant proof that we're the pinnacle of evolution.
Budget wise you can tell the recession hit hard and mass tourism have sky rocketed the prices, so if you're looking for a budget holiday alongside your Ryanair ticket you can stick to Vodka. You won't stick out and feel right at home after 23h00 on the main streets.
But if you are out for a relaxing family holiday and avoid the hurds of thirsty you will find plenty to see and visit during day time.
You eat just as good on the small side streets and skip a lot of the FOMO, keep your kids close when you walk on the main streets as it is crowded like hell.
Enjoy!

Very nice old city, a bit overcrowded however.
Very nice old city, a bit overcrowded however. The city center is not that big, but there's a lot to see and there're many museums. I'd recommend visiting European Solodarity museum. It's very interesting interactive museum starting with its unusual industrial building with terrace and finishing with it's exibitishions that let you immerse yourself in the history.

Very pretty historic town.
Very pretty historic town. Lovely architecture , cobbled streets, lots of bars and restaurants to choose from. Very reasonably priced compared to the UK. Easy and cheap access, by train, to the coastal town of Sopot with its long wooden pier and sandy beach. Made several visits to the Balsam café with its good beer, Balsam cocktails, great members of staff, interesting artwork and tasty food
The room was very comfortable and I enjoyed having a balcony with a view of the water. The staff were helpful and the spa was well maintained. The highlight was the breakfasts. The variety of made-to-order and buffet options at breakfast was outstanding. The hotel is a short walk from the old town, in a quiet location. My husband really liked the location for going running each morning. Highly recommend staying at the Hotel Almond.
The location of the hotel in the heart of the old town is perfect. The staff were very friendly and helpful, particularly Jakub who also makes the best Mai Tai cocktails I have ever had. Lovely clean and spacious rooms with very comfy beds and pillows. The hotel in general has a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere and smells really good. Visited mid December and the Christmas tree in the foyer was beautiful addition.
We recently stayed at the Motlowa Hotel in Gdansk and had a wonderful experience. The hotel’s location by the Motlawa River and close to the Old Town was perfect for exploring the city. Our room was spacious and clean. Downstairs, the hotel has a fantastic food hall with bars, providing great dining and socializing options. The staff were incredibly friendly and attentive, making our stay truly enjoyable.
