Hotel in Elvas
Located in Elvas, less than 1 km from Municipal Library of Elvas, Vila Gale Collection Elvas provides accommodation with a restaurant, private parking, a bar and a garden. Historic property inside the old city walls. Originally a convent then a military prison this centuries old property has been completely renovated into a model of elegance and comfort. Towering ceilings in the grand dining hall,an immaculately gardened former cloister and an extensive spa area all add to air of elegance. Our “junior suite “ had a massive living room; the enjoining bedroom was only slightly smaller but still large by anyone’s standards. There was a safe and refrigerator in the room. Lights and power plugs everywhere and even a set of USB ports next to the bedside- a first for us in Portugal. The bathroom was also good sized with an immense shower- no tub. The wall mounted hair dryer had a very short cord which resisted being pulled out and you had to hold the on button the entire time- a minor nuisance. A shaving/makeup mirror would have appreciated. Washcloths were provided- also unusual in Portugal. Breakfast was a bountiful buffet and there was also a chef attended omelette station available. Parking is free on the streets nearby or they offer garage parking for 7.5 Euro. The location is perfect- everything in the historic center is just steps away but beware there are lots of steep inclines involved. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The concierge helped us find a tire replacement center nearby as we had a flat on the way. He also set up a private tour of the city at the last minute for us since our flat tire and repair cost us several hours of time we had hoped to spend on touring. Very highly recommended.

Hotel Rural Monte da Provença, Hotel D. Luis - Elvas and SL Hotel Santa Luzia – Elvas have received great reviews from travellers in Elvas regarding the views from their hotel rooms.
Elvas is an historic old city with an amazing Roman aqueduct. The local restaurants were not catering for tourists and hardly anyone spoke English. We ate in the hotel which was good value in a lovely setting. We visited the British cemetery for the soldiers of the Peninsular War. The old town is is all cobblestone alleys and we kept getting lost but that was part of its charm.
This is a cool fort town on the Spanish border worth visiting. Great for practicing my Spanish and Portuguese. The old town is walkable and worth a day. Get a number of a local taxi service to explore the other two forts nearby, pick up groceries etc. Plan ahead of taking a comboio or autoexpresso as it's in a pretty remote location so you can't just catch a train out every 30 minutes like you can in Lisbon. The region it is in, the Alentejo is also generally quite beautiful and it's worth taking a bus to Estremoz and the Evora if in the area.
Must see Both Fortes & Aquaduct A great small restaurant recommended by the Hotel was Mercato, is a perfect place to dine. Excellent service and food cooked to order with a lot of attention to quality and flavours.
Elvas is like a lost gem! All the portuguese should know the history of Elvas, in order to understand the importance of the city for the independence of the country. Elvas should be visited with a tourism guide, someone that can explain all the complexity of the place. Don´t forget that Elvas is a Unesco World Heritage site. If you are visiting Elvas during the summer, you can only use mornings to visit the city, unless you want to roast in the sun, so stay there 3 days. Enjoy a swimming pool during lunch and afternoon. I guess, you can stay 2 days during winter.
It is a very interesting town with a well-preserved medieval Castle, an impressive aqueduct dating back to the 16th century, a beautifully restored fort and the Our Lady of the Assumption Cathedral in the Republic Square. The town is enclosed by defensive walls with battlements and fortifications based on a star-shaped design built as a first line defence against a Spanish invasion. The historical old town is a treasure.
There is plenty to see and discover in this small hilltop town - certainly enough to keep one occupied for two or three days with much needed rests in between. It was August when we visited and restaurants were busy. I certainly recommend making a reservation in advance even for the simplest of places which are all fine. Do try the Alentejo wine - much of it is excellent. Walking the perimeter of the town was very enjoyable , even in the heat, and we loved the little English cemetery near the Castello which held the bodies of those that fought in the Peninsula War in the early 1800s. I also tried to visit as many churches as possible, cool, restful places on a hot summer's day. I would say Elvas was good for couples, those with young children and anyone interested in history. Perhaps not the place for teenagers looking for a Good Time. It is, however, easy to reach the busier (Spanish) towns of Badajoz (30 mins away) and Merida (one hour), and just one hour away from the historic town of Evora.
I had already a second lovely stay in Cool Guest House and would whole-heartedly recommend it to everyone! The place is very cozy and clean, the location is just in the heart of a old city center of Elvas and most importantly, the stuff is amazing! Each time I was welcomed with a lot of dedication: I was able to do a check-in and a check-out later than indicated, they helped me to find a free and nearby place to park my car, collected some snacks and cold water to the room... Feeling very grateful for everything! Muito obrigada!
The suites are amazing. In fact they are apartments. Outdoor space is very comfortable. The suite is big and it has all the comfort and privacy as in a detached house. The hotel is very quite, in the middle of the countryside. The swimming pool is large and there is plenty of space around to enjoy the Alentejo sun. Breakfast is excellent. It is our second time and we plan to come back.
Elvas
The room was spacious and comfortable. The manager was very kind and accommodating. The property was beautiful, peaceful and well maintained. The breakfast was excellent with a good selection. Indoor parking included. Also the property has a large pool, but due to the cold weather we were not able to take advantage of it. I highly recommend this place.
We have stayed here before on our trip from Santander to Southern Portugal. It is very easy to find and a very interesting town. Well worth a visit to see the old town. Hotel staff all lovely we had a slight problem with the door lock and we were moved to a different room immediately. Staff all very friendly. Food good and breakfast good.

The location is perfect - right in the heart of Elvas - easy to find and a fabulous place. The hosts were amazing - met us, showed us where to park the car, recommended a fantastic place for dinner, and were just lovely people. Perfect for a couple travelling with two grown up kids.
Everything is done with so much thought and care right down to the aroma of detergent of the towels. I decided to stay another night just to take it in a little longer. Ricardo and Phillip are the most wonderful and helpful hosts. I highly recommend this wonderful place.

Wonderful palace! Lovely pool and fantastic breakfast. We had an excellent tour of the hotel/palace. An honor bar forfor drinks! A walk uphill to the town of Elvas and restaurants. Great town for shopping as well.
The location and the surrounding nature. The swimming pool in the hot days. The night sky since the place is isolated and there is very little light polution.
