Hotel in Elvas
Situated in a converted convent in the World Heritage city of Elvas, Hotel São João De Deus features shady gardens and a pool with views of the walled town. Never been in Elvas it was hard to choose and we were super happy that we choose Hotel Sao Joao De Deus. Parking is outside of the wall with direct access to the garden and hotel. The staff was super helpful. The location is unbeatable, as you are already in the old center. What we really liked was the amazing layout of the hotel. You can walk up on the Veranda and around and you will have different views on the town and the surroundings, the Fort - as you are on the top of the wall. We really loved it. They have very good breakfast with long hours.

Many families visiting Elvas loved staying at Hotel Rural Monte da Provença, Vila Gale Collection Elvas and Cool Guest House.
Off the beaten path, on the far East side of Portugal (nearly on the Spanish border). Friendly and interesting people, and interesting history to explore through castles, forts and a marvelous aqueduct.
Lots to see, so make sure you have comfortable clothing and shoes. Like most Portugeus towns, it is very hilly with narrow streets and lots of steps. Architecture is stunning and historic with plenty of stories of old. More vegetarian/vegan restaurants would be a bonus. The whole Alentejo region is a must-see when visiting this beautiful country.
Elvas is an historic old city with an amazing Roman aqueduct. The local restaurants were not catering for tourists and hardly anyone spoke English. We ate in the hotel which was good value in a lovely setting. We visited the British cemetery for the soldiers of the Peninsular War. The old town is is all cobblestone alleys and we kept getting lost but that was part of its charm.
This is a cool fort town on the Spanish border worth visiting. Great for practicing my Spanish and Portuguese. The old town is walkable and worth a day. Get a number of a local taxi service to explore the other two forts nearby, pick up groceries etc. Plan ahead of taking a comboio or autoexpresso as it's in a pretty remote location so you can't just catch a train out every 30 minutes like you can in Lisbon. The region it is in, the Alentejo is also generally quite beautiful and it's worth taking a bus to Estremoz and the Evora if in the area.
Must see Both Fortes & Aquaduct A great small restaurant recommended by the Hotel was Mercato, is a perfect place to dine. Excellent service and food cooked to order with a lot of attention to quality and flavours.
Elvas is like a lost gem! All the portuguese should know the history of Elvas, in order to understand the importance of the city for the independence of the country. Elvas should be visited with a tourism guide, someone that can explain all the complexity of the place. Don´t forget that Elvas is a Unesco World Heritage site. If you are visiting Elvas during the summer, you can only use mornings to visit the city, unless you want to roast in the sun, so stay there 3 days. Enjoy a swimming pool during lunch and afternoon. I guess, you can stay 2 days during winter.
Elvas
The house and its sorroundings are charming. An old house converted into a hotel, the façade is original, decorated inside in accordance with the location and origin. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. If traveling in the summer, the pool is big and surrounded by beautiful trees. The owners were lovely and paid attention to every detail, 100% personalised service. The breakfast was served with good local products. Would definitely stay again.
Elvas
When we travel, we prefer more of a home atmosphere. If a property offers the chance to stay in an historic place, complete with period settings, even better. Travassos 11 offers all of this, and more. We took the two bedroom apartment, and it is a “wow”. The old house, with tiled stairs, antiques, and large family style dining room, is a marvel. The staff are as well prepared and supportive as the property. We really enjoyed our stay here.
The size of the room was perfect for the occasion. Toiletries are available and smell amazing. There was heating available (this was during winter). Staff is friendly and ready to help when asked. The hotel area is really cute - it is an old castle/fortress, so there are plenty of picture worthy spots. Moreover, you're right by the entrance of the city center, which means you can walk everywhere around once you park the car.
Elvas
Such an amazing place right in the heart of Elvas. This place is BIG and can accommodate many. Added plus, kitchen to cook meals. Highlight...the roof top balcony to view the city. Oh, and, I loved the window seats! The host was very friendly and we were gifted with a bolo cake and port wine 🍷 I would definitely suggest this place and if ever in Elvas again....I would rent here again.
Elvas
Exceptional hosts/ owners that care about their establishment and the experience that guests will have of it and of the city. This translates into the quality of the rooms, the common areas and of the breakfast. It also leads to helping guests enjoy Elvas by making relevant individual recommendations and bookings. Highly recommended.
Breakfast - not still attending minimum expectations Room - temperature not comfortable; bathroom highly discontent for cold... Restaurant - standards very low for a 4 stars hotel. Food reached an OK for quality expected but not for service and attendance
Perfect place to stay after a long drive from Spain. Handy car park just outside, swimming pool very clean and a short drive to the beautiful centre of Elvas. Can't wait to return!
The beautiful house filled with artworks. The extensive grounds ,the birds and the concert of the frocs in the pond. The friendly welcome, the kindness of the staff at breakfast.
