Suite Hotel Jardins Da Ajuda, hotel in Funchal

With excellent indoor and outdoor pools, this Madeira resort offers a broad range of relaxation options including sauna and hydro-massage.

This is a fantastic place considering the value for the price.I went through the reviews and many negative reviews that make no sense. Rooms are spacious, with a balcony and kitchenette, bed comfy, toilet all good. The breakfast buffet is offering and covering all the options that you can have, all fresh and great. Parking on the street is easy and in front of the hotel. The pool, sauna and jacuzzi are the best thing after hiking and walking day. Overall a great experience. Recommend

FAQs about hotels in Funchal

Portuguese Charm and Island Capital

Considered one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, charming Funchal is the capital of Madeira Island. It is an important base for tourists from all over the world that come to the Madeira hotels, B&B’s and resorts to enjoy their cliffs and beaches, as well as its slopes and colourful towns.

Founded in 1424, its position allowed it to quickly become an important trading harbour, attracting many prominent families. Its mild weather was the beginning of its touristic development in the 18th century, with a therapeutic and health profile.

With the establishment of the port first, and Madeira International/Funchal Airport later, the city grew to become a major destination. Nowadays, the city concentrates most of the hotels, luxury resorts and casinos of Madeira. Accommodation located in Santa Cruz, near Funchal Airport, is also available for those wanting to avoid the rush.

Don’t miss a long walk around Sé historical district, and enjoy the Santa Clara Convent and the Sé Cathedral. The Quinta do Palheiro Ferreiro Park and the Mercado dos Lavradores are also a must.

Whether you need an ocean-view villa or a small guest house, Booking.com offers a wide range of Funchal accommodation.

    3-4 days is plenty.

3-4 days is plenty. There are surprisingly beautiful gardens & green spaces giving a break from all the noise & congestion. Beautiful flowers & trees blooming everywhere during the May Flower Festival. When multiple cruise ships are in port at once, it is packed. Driving & parking is a nightmare. Summer season must be a crowded mess. Some beautiful vistas, but few places to pull over & enjoy them. Very high fog shrouded mountains. The tourist board proclaims that Madeira in general is the Hawaii of the Atlantic. Lots of Banana trees, some palms, some similar flowers, yes. The hiking is in the cold wet fog & the beaches can't compare.

A lovely place to visit for its scenery, cityscape, flora and food. Visits to the many gardens were so colourful, especially Monte via the cable car. Easy walking around the city with lots of shops and restaurants. The Flower Festival was colourful with parades, folk art and music, classic car parade and lots more to see. Several interesting art galleries and museums to visit as well.

The island offers tremendous variety that takes time to discover. 2 weeks would go by very quickly here. Renting a car almost essential as it allows you to visit sites away from. the organised bus trips, which would be good if you don't fancy driving and the inevitable route finding issues.

Madeira is a lovely island with many spectacular hikes and breathtaking views, but the city of Funchal was the least satisfying aspect of our visit. Driving in and out of the city, to and from our hotel, was stressful and confusing: roads are narrow and wind around blind curves, the locals drive very fast, and because parking is seemingly a free-for-all you spend a lot of time dodging parked cars and making room for other cars to go past you. The downtown businesses and restaurants have surrendered entirely to the crowds of tourists from the daily cruise ships, which dock in the middle of the central harbor. As a result, the staff at shops and eateries are thoroughly tired and unenthusiastic about their jobs. We plan to return to Madeira, but we will definitely pick another town to stay in.

Madeira is a wonderful location to visit.

Madeira is a wonderful location to visit. It feels incredibly safe and relaxed. We traveled in the Spring and it was a bit too cool to swim. I would absolutely return in the Summer. We had 2 nights but really 3-5 nights would have been better. Our return flight got cancelled due to winds, which happens frequently, so plan accordingly by getting the insurance or make sure to have a buffer if you have a connecting flight from a different airline.

We have visited Funchal previously and have found different activities and places to visit during each holiday, The restaurants located in Santa Maria area have a choice of menus at competitive prices. The cable car from Funchal to Monte is an experience not to be missed, along with a toboggan ride. The tuk-tuk tours are also worth a couple of hours of your time to visit several areas beyond the centre and into local village areas. We also visited the Valley of the Nuns during our recent holiday, and enjoyed lunch in a local restaurant. The bus journey from Funchal took less than an hour, with return tickets costing less than 7 euros for 2 adults. Our recent holiday was during the annual Flower Festival and parade which is an experience I would recommend

The location is great, right down by the sea, and conveniently placed for the town centre. Thirty minutes walk from the old town. The rooms we had were side facing sea views, and truly superb. We spent every evening sitting on one or other balcony gazing out at the ocean. The rooms themselves were spacious and comfortable. The atmosphere of the hotel was very old school luxurious, and there’s clearly a lot of history there. Breakfasts were good. I’m vegan, and there was plenty of choice, even for me. Staff were very helpful and friendly.

Our stay exceed our expectations. We were welcomed by Sidonio and supported through the entire stay by the whole team, from advice on the best trails to where to get the bus. The rooftop bar is amazing and offers every comfort - it is more expensive than the average in Funchal and Madeira, but worth it. The apartment was furnished to the highest standard and everything is curated to be also aesthetically pleasing. The location is central and the hotel has a number of parking spots reserved for the guests, which is a great benefit.

View from our room was outstanding - could see the Sea and all of Funchal. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly. Breakfast was excellent and tasty. Location is good for the older area of Funchal, however be prepared to walk up hill to get back from the centre of town (all of Funchal is either going up or down hills!). Madeira are nice and strict on the COVID rules (masks, sanitiser and distancing), the hotel was an example of the rules being followed across the island and I felt safe there.

The staff were so friendly and helpful. Fantastic breakfast. Plenty of choice and all fresh. The grounds were spacious and plenty of different areas to sit in. Loved the daily happy hour! We ate both in the Alfama and Basilico restaurants and the food was excellent. Elton John tribute night was great fun. Played the crazy golf and pétanque which was fun. Courtesy bus was not running but Buses to town centre and airport stopped just outside hotel. Will return to this hotel when we visit Madeira again.

We missed our connection flight and arrived to the hotel in the middle of the night. Despite the time, Nuno welcomed us with a smile and very patient explanations and made the start of our trip in Madeira very pleasant. Also the rest of the staff was very nice, attentive and helpful. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. The hotel's garden is gorgeous and has a nice panoramic view of the sea and was the perfect place for breakfast. Breakfast was excellent with large variety. Very spacious room - larger than expected with lots of space. Breakfast was much more impressive than expected; it consisted of a full spread with lots of fruits, hot food selections, breads, and pasteis de nata! Definitely exceeded expectations. Rooftop pool looked gorgeous and has an amazing view, but unfortunately it wasn't heated, and when we went to check it out it wasn't really pool weather. Overall a very modern hotel that makes a great base for exploring Funchal and Madeira in.

Staff were friendly, helpful and polite. The breakfast was okay, not great. Poor selection of fruit, coffee machines always dirty. I then managed to get into a different type of breakfast to keep going during my time there, given that I had 14 days to stay in Madeira. If you decide to have breakfast outside, you need to look out for pigeons as they constantly come to your table and try to steal your food! The view from the restaurant is mostly to the pool, not a sea view. But still okay.

The apartment has a good location in Funchal and it's very nice. Close by there is a cenvenient public parking spot (4,50 EUR for 24h) and it is nice that you can use some of the services of the Hotel Madeira (which manages the apartment) that is very close (for example, the pool).

Lovely house with great outdoor space. Location is quiet and fantastic being so close to the Old Town and Funchal centre . Off street parking for those that hire a car Would definitely check for availability when we return to Madeira. Paul and Sue
